Dolphins and members of the whale family can make laughing and singing sounds. When looking at the water in search for humans they saw something swimming. Fear and fantasy do strange things with eyewitnesses. Fish do not make any sound... And even in old times, Poseidon was known to have daughters (and sons) that lured seamen onto their cliffs with singing. Near the Lorelei bends in the river Rhine, ships were wrecked if the shipper was distracted by their songs from the high peaks.

I have kayaked in Florida inter-coastal water ways , manatees and dolphins were swimming around me. I just caught some glimpses of them. A fin , a head ,and body in the cloudy water. I can see people with out picture books my have miss identified as mermaids.

Maps are inportant because the places these explores seen mermaids are commonly for over 100 years where people in the Caribbean see them. It’s so common in Haiti and Jamaica , with serious warnings for children at rivers. So much contact with them too.

I believe that the origin of this myth does not come from manatees but from women diving for something ( pearls sponges corals ) which was not uncommon in the "Caribbean regions" at the time.

The eyes of sea serpent on maps are looking at something on the shoreline. enormous islands that are missing were actually so small. sailors would run a ground and not see them just below high tide. Anyone have grandparents that were fisherman to teach you this?

I think it is a flying saucer, there are a few depicted in biblical art. I think it is more realistic an idea, that the mermaids have 2 legs covered in scales, with fin like tails for feet, rather than a solid fish body, it doesn't seem anatomically correct.
