In Colombia each city has a different climate, many foreigners are surprised when they arrive in Bogota the capital and expect a warm and hot weather and find a cold and cloudy city reminiscent of the climate of London or Amsterdam, unfortunately Holywood is not interested in portraying the country as it is in Mr. and Mrs. Smith could to Bogota as a tropical city in the Amazon with architecture of the XVl century If you like the theme of the legend of El Dorado you can also visit the Guatavita Lagoon which is on the outskirts of Bogota, there the legend was born and spaced to the rest of the region, uncharted, the road to El Dorado, everything originated here

Correction: Medellin is north of Manizales. Not south. I mispronounced some things. The emphasis is on the last syllable for Bogotá. A couple of other things. This video is partially a remake of a video I made a few years ago. That video became part of a scam. I figured that was a good enough excuse to take it down and make some improvements and additions. However, the audio on this video isn’t great. I’m on the road and portions were rerecorded in my car.

Why call it "zona cafetera"? Just call it the coffee zone or the coffee axis idk. Like calling spanish conquerors "conquistadors", which in singular is just conqueror, but in spanish. I feel there's no reason for this usage of perfectly translatable spanish terms
@Kryoss_3 ай бұрын
@@j.s.ospina9861Although it might be easier for some people to use the direct translation, the name of the region is Eje Cafetero so it isn’t wrong to say it in its native language just like a lot of people don’t translate the names of some fruits even though they do have an english name such as Guanabana (also know as soursop in English) and Guayaba (the spanish name for guava). Also “conquistadors” is straight out wrong, the correct way to say it is “conquistadores”. It’s just a matter of preference.

18:00 Cartagena also has the best preserved buildings from the imperial period, when the territory was known as the New Granada Viceroyalty. Even today one can visit the San Felipe de Barajas' Castle where the British were crushed during the Jenkin's Ear War, never to return to the city again, until the then Prince Charles and Camilla returned during the 00's to inaugurate a plaque honouring the lives of all the British soldiers that died by the thousands during the 18th century, trying to pray the valuable city away from Spanish control, nevertheless the plaque was destroyed by a local history teacher, hammer in hand, soon after being open to the public. Nearby Cartagena de Indias, there's San Basilio de Palenque, the first town founded on the Americas by formerly enslaved africans, whom freed themselves during the 17th century never to be recaptured by the Spaniards again, today the town is home to the only Spanish-based creole language on the Americas, called Palenquero and the town is also famous for its unique cuisine and western/central african traditions with a colombian twist.

As a colombian, Thanks for the video! It is great to recognize this country as the wonder it is rather than the difficult history that it has had . Couple corrections: the pacific region is not called “Chocó”. That is actually the name of one of the departments (the political subdivisions of the country) that make part of that region. The pacific region is also shared with Cauca, Nariño and Valle del Cauca departments. Also, Medellín is north of Manizales, not south. In addition, in Bogotá, the “Ciclovía” (bike way - literal translation) is the reason for some road closing on Sundays, but this also happens On Festive days (which we have A LOT in Colombia). It is until 2pm, and happens also on other cities like Medellin. Also, the licence plate restriction is true for Colombia’s biggest cities, not just Bogotá. Finally, the Cristobal Colón peak you mention as part of the Andes region, is not in the Andes, it is on the mountain range called “Sierra nevada de Santa Marta” located in the Caribbean region, separated from the Andes mountain range. The highest point or peak in the Andean region is Nevado del Huila, at 5364 meters above sea level.

You have no idea how much i appreciate your video! I am born in Colombia but grew up in the Netherlands. After i've spent 3 months in Colombia in 2018, i decided that i wanted to emigrate back to the country where i was born, which i'm now planning to do so in a year or 2. But what i really want you to know is, that i have a lot of stress of thinking how i can make a difference to the country as soon as i get there. How can i find my purpose? Your video reminds me that i should not worry. Colombia does not need to be "saved", as the country has been doing great already and is being very innovative. Ofcourse we have our struggles, but the country is already one of the richest countries in the world. It's just my view and perspective i need to change. Your video gave me this. Thank you!

If you want to see an even wilder and crazier geography, take a look at Peru. I'm not saying that Colombian geography is little, but Peru's is even more extreme and impressive! From the immense coastal deserts, with ruins and history contemporary to Egypt to most of the tropical glaciers in the world, did you know that Peru gives rise to the Amazon basin, which is born in the peaks of the Peruvian Andes, occupies a much larger territory of 967,922.47 km² only in Peru making it the mother of the Amazon and the second most Amazonian country in the world, behind Brazil, Peru has several records and has the largest population of bears and mammals in the Americas! As if that were not enough, this year it just surpassed Colombia in bird records, so the biodiversity figures must be updated every year! Because Peru, Colombia and Brazil do not stop discovering new species in their territories and these figures change all the time, everything depends on the money that the governments invest in the study of their territories, I have no doubt that Peru will surpass Colombia in all records! The only thing missing is money, another point is NOT to fall into the simplistic way of saying that Peru only has "coast, mountains and jungle" it is a serious error to study the Peruvian geography that is extremely diverse, the correct way is to mention all its natural regions that are 11: 1. Cold Sea of the Peruvian Current, Peru has "two types of sea" as strange as it may seem, the cold sea of the Pacific has a completely different fauna than the Peruvian tropical sea, it is thanks to the Peruvian cold current that Peru has 10 times more fishing production than countries with two seas like Colombia, the Peruvian sea is much richer. 2. Tropical Sea, the Peruvian tropical sea is located in the north of the country, in Tumbes and Piura the reefs are large and the fish there are completely tropical, it is a different ecosystem to the cold sea of the Peruvian current, the sea is warm all year round and the beaches are beautiful. 3. Coastal Desert, desert by the sea, with the most impressive views you will ever see, you don't have to go to Namibia to see this. 4. Equatorial Dry Forest, dry forests are not only seen in Europe, in Peru we have the most extreme and beautiful landscapes. 5. Pacific Tropical Forest, someone mentioned a jungle by the sea, in Peru we also have these landscapes. 6. Steppe Mountain Range, impressive views of the Andes never seen before. 7. Puna, there is an entire region with the same name. 8. Páramo, the most incredible paramos you will see in Peru 9. Yungas, the dastric changes in the Peruvian territory are incredible. 10. Amazon, it occupies almost 70% of the country, Peru is an Amazonian country. 11. Palm savannah, large and little explored savannahs.

This situation is sad because it always ends up in us Colombian having to choose between far right or far left presidential candidates on second turn who's parties are to a level directly or indirectly complicit on the armed conflict, guerrillas or paramilitaries and polarization. Mockus is sadly out of the political world as he developed a pretty bad alzheimer over the last decade and can barely speak 😢

Because Colombia being a tropical country, it gets quite hot, oppresingly hot. Bogotá, the capital city, as well as many other cities are situated at a high elevation due to the Andes mountains making them colder cities with great weather all year round.

@@daveman90000 Correct, that's the main reason, atlhough there is a secondary one, in the center the city was easier to defend

because we are crazy people... nah, seriously it is because the andean region has a "nice" climate and the lands surrounding the andes are quite fertile (yup, lots of people live near to volcanoes) and lets not forget about politics since viceroyalty times (most of Presidents hail from the andean region).

For a second there at around the 16:00 minute mark I thought I was looking at a Roman amphitheater... To the right of a tall building also on the right.... I've got to quit listening to Mike Duncan's History of Rome podcast over and over and over again..
