If the Djibouti play their cards right they could set their country up as a neutral shipping and financial hub for the region. Considering the country's lack of natural resources this is probably their best opportunity for prosperity. I suspect that Djibouti allowed China to build a base both for access to Chinese money and to counter American influence, helping Djibouti to avoid becoming an American puppet. Compared to the US and China, Russia have less economic clout while being more bellicose, and thus were probably seen as more trouble than they'd be worth.

Well if they had learned anything, they could take a look at Korea and see which side of that divided country ended up with the short end of the stick and whom supported them in getting that short end. Being pro-west and American pays hell of a lot better in terms of literal finance and in terms of freedom and prosperity for the citizens of that country. Being Pro China and Pro Russia means you're also a puppet as you would be with the West, except there is no incentive or benefit to being aligned just suffering.

Out of topic but if you are on roller coaster do you feel any excitement? On quora there was a picture about S Korean soldier who was on such and out of all group he was the only1 who didnt seem thrilled or anything. It was explained that the G force there is too low compared to a military plane so the pilots dont get excited by the more basic entertainment.

I have a Djibouti story. Coming back from Arabian Gulf during Desert Storm my ship had issues with our furnace for burning sewage. So we had a contract to empty out our sewage tanks into tanker trucks. We pull up pierside and pump out our sewage onto tanker trucks. Our command signs paperwork and we then we watch these tanker trucks drive to end of the pier we are tied up to, they attach a large hose and toss it into the water, then they proceed to pump out sewage into the water. SMH.

as someone stationed in Chabelley, there is LOT of tension with that Chinese base (which is visible from Chabelley) there are commercial drones flown over the base that are suspected to be sent by the Chinese base but nothing confirmed.

@@freeeggs3811 If the conflict is big enough, all those bases will start attacking each other, which means the city will be the battlefield. Djibouti gets security by playing host to these bases (any conflict in a neighboring country that spilled into Djibouti would draw the attention of the countries maintaining bases there), but it's tied to the hope that those bases won't be direct participants in a conflict between those that own them.

dijbouti has lots of problems in terms of poverty so the money was probably welcomed however having large US (and later Chinese) bases probably secures their security which when surrounded by Ethiopia, Ethiopia and Yemen is probably not a bad idea.

There's 3 resources you missed 1) Lac 'Assal is -150 m, below sea level so could generate Hydro power from a short sea pipeline or canal, double power out put by differential in valence of sea water vs the salt lake ( not mention making a deal with Ethiopia to contect to the below sea level, -150m Ethiopian Depression for a similar project just north of the border). 2) Sun Light: a great location for solar thermal - not just for power but for manufacturing, smelting - & PV plants that could feed Africian grid & create H2 & other Net Zero Carbon Fuels with said Solar power. Pumped Hydro: 227 meters above sea level is Lac Abbé, on the Ethiopian border, above it accross the border in Ethiopia is Lake Afambo 404 meters above sea level for even more pumped Hydro Storage. If the lakes were connected by a shipping canal rather than a pipeline Ethiopia would not longer be land locked. 3) The Sea: Mericulture: Replant Mangroves to all out islands, undeveloped coast lines, & create protective artificial mangrove islands in front of Ports for storm barriers. Sustainable havest can yeild lumber, bio-char & charcoal, & there is a rare Indian breed of camel 🐫 can feed almost exclusively on Mangroves for textile fiber, leather, dairy & meat. There has been successful growing of human consumable vegetable "sea asparagus" on mud flats on the Horn of Africa along with salt tolerant ground cover, shrubs & trees to feed Goats 🐐 ( again: textile fiber, leather, dairy & meat). Add aqua culture of Kelp & algae & at the edge of deeper cool water, abalone, muscles, oysters, clams, large barnacles & tilapia. The location, location, location that you mentioned could make them the terminus of a pan-Saharan highway to the Atlantic, an link in a pan-African North South Highway from Alexanderia on the Med to Cape Horn I'm South Africa, & A Red Sea Crossing to Europe & Asia via Arabia.

Refueled and resupplied there. 100° out, place stunk to high heaven, and men folk were actively dumpster diving for trash and expended stores we were pitching out. Hmmm guys, Camp Lemonier is NOT on a FORMER french foreign legion base. The french base is still there. The french base hosted the us troops during construction of camp Lemonier next to the French base and Djibouti airport. The french base to this day still provide some support function to the US base including some of de training fields. French troops are anywhere from 1500 to 2000 from all branches of the armed forces. The base also serves as training and proving grounds for french forces before desert deployment.

I remember the temp was always over 100 but usually 120 to 130 I couldnf wait to get out of there.Nexf I was in Prijstina, Kosovo That felt like heaven after leaving the desert.
