Indonesian here, the first time I learned about Suriname and found out that there are many Javanese and Indonesian descendants there, it was really mindblowing, and yes, my initial response was "whoa how did that even happen?". as a Dutch person, I'm both shocked and ashamed how little I do know about Suriname as a country. All these Dutch names (Zorg en Hoop International, which literally translates to Care and Hope International, which I found to be quite wholesome) both are funny to me, but at the same time also make me, yet again, more aware of our past (and present) colonial influence as a colonial power. This video has inspired me to learn more about Suriname, and I hope to someday visit the country and learn more about the Suriname cultures and peoples! Great video, thank you. :)

I love explaining to people where I'm from. I call myself a world citizen. It's not that I've traveled all around the world. But I am a Surinamese citizen, of Indonesian descent, speaking Dutch and English and Javanese and Sranang Tongo and know words in Indian and Hindi and Chinese and Portuguese and Spanish. We're Caribbean because of our membership in Caricom. We're Latinos because we're located in South America (OK this is a stretch, but I jokingly include it 😁😉). I love our culture and diversity. @@kotarojujo2737 Nope, not only for Javanese descent. I'm Chinese Indonesian and can easily relate to our Chinese Surinamese brothers and sisters. If I see someone with the surname Tjioe, I can guess they're Chinese Indonesian or Chinese Surinamese. Chinese from English speaking countries would spell the same surname as Chew or Chiu. And amongst Chinese Indonesians and Chinese Surinamese, many are Hakka. So through our shared origins and experiences in former Dutch colonies, we can easily relate on both a superficial and deeper level too. There are also Indian descent in both countries. In Indonesia, many of the Indian descent are Sindhi and Punjabi in Java, and Tamil in Sumatra. I'm not sure where in India the Indo-Surinamese originated, but I'm sure the two can relate to some extent for the same reasons as the Chinese and Javanese descents in both countries.

Crazy how these ancestral lines work and how people were transported to different continents. I'm South African and most of the mixed and Asian people from the Western Cape(Cape Town) part of the country are descended from Sumatra and the Java islands in Indonesia, as well as Malaysia, The Philippines and India. Only a few of Indonesian descent can speak Basha fluently. Both my parents are mixed with Javanese and African ancestry, but my mom has Indian ancestry as well. Born in Suriname, living in Holland. Amazing video, I watch the whole thing breathless while smiling like an idiot. I was very surprised about the emotions I felt. Ashamed that I know so little about the place where I was born. So very proud that such a small country produced so many world-class athletes (sadly many represent Holland). Very disappointed the kickboxer were left out. For example: Ernesto Hoost, Remy Bonjaski, Tyrone Spong, Melvin Manhoef and many more. Also, how can you not mention Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard? But still an amazing video. Thank you.

Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard were on that list! The only one that I was missing when it comes to sports is Regilio Tuur.

I was looking forward to this episode. I'm Brazilian and even though we are neighbours (well, I live in southern Brazil but still it counts), Suriname has always been a mystery to me.

A única coisa que eu sabia do Suriname é que teve aquele episódio do suicídio em massa no final dos anos 70, que na verdade foi na Guiana...

11:26 The "Eenheid in verscheidenheid" word is the exact same word in Indonesia if we translated unity in diversity into Indonesian language, which is (very obviously) written "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" or "Bersatu Dalam Keberagaman"

Everyone that lives in Suriname, apart from the native Craib en Arowak people, is a decendant of someone that came to this country...either willingly or unwillingly.

I heard since I was a kid that many Javanese people speaking Javanese language at Suriname. But I can’t accessed much information that time in the 90s. And since the youtube era, I searched for Javan-Suriname music, then I found Kasimex houseband, which has many singles in Javanese language. Salam rahayu nggo sedulur kabeh neng Suriname.
