as a Dutch person, I'm both shocked and ashamed how little I do know about Suriname as a country. All these Dutch names (Zorg en Hoop International, which literally translates to Care and Hope International, which I found to be quite wholesome) both are funny to me, but at the same time also make me, yet again, more aware of our past (and present) colonial influence as a colonial power. This video has inspired me to learn more about Suriname, and I hope to someday visit the country and learn more about the Suriname cultures and peoples! Great video, thank you. :)

@@kotarojujo2737 Nope, not only for Javanese descent. I'm Chinese Indonesian and can easily relate to our Chinese Surinamese brothers and sisters. If I see someone with the surname Tjioe, I can guess they're Chinese Indonesian or Chinese Surinamese. Chinese from English speaking countries would spell the same surname as Chew or Chiu. And amongst Chinese Indonesians and Chinese Surinamese, many are Hakka. So through our shared origins and experiences in former Dutch colonies, we can easily relate on both a superficial and deeper level too. There are also Indian descent in both countries. In Indonesia, many of the Indian descent are Sindhi and Punjabi in Java, and Tamil in Sumatra. I'm not sure where in India the Indo-Surinamese originated, but I'm sure the two can relate to some extent for the same reasons as the Chinese and Javanese descents in both countries.

Crazy how these ancestral lines work and how people were transported to different continents. I'm South African and most of the mixed and Asian people from the Western Cape(Cape Town) part of the country are descended from Sumatra and the Java islands in Indonesia, as well as Malaysia, The Philippines and India. Only a few of Indonesian descent can speak Basha fluently. Both my parents are mixed with Javanese and African ancestry, but my mom has Indian ancestry as well. But the weirdest thing for me, my last name is actually Filipino and don't have a clue where that came from😁😁😁

As you sort of explained: when Suriname became independent about half of the population moved to the Netherlands. As a result, if you live in the Netherlands, sooner or later you'll get to know Dutch Surinamese, either born there or of heritage. If not, then certainly you'll see artists (Trafassi for example), comedians (Raymann anyone?) and sporters with such heritage here. So even though personally I've got no caribbean blood at all in me as far as I'm aware of, simply by being Dutch I feel a connection to Suriname.

Same for me. I have felt this connection since I was a kid and learned about Suriname at school. In the seventies there was also this book and tv series 'Kon Hesi Baka'. I loved that book so much. For those who would like to explore music from Suriname: There are playlists and compilations galore on Spotify and probably other streaming services as well. But one album that’s definitely worth a try is ‘Surinam Funk Force’, a compilation of rare soul and funk tracks, compiled by the great peeps at Rush Hour Records in Amsterdam. It’s a compilation of soul and funk made in the ‘70s and ‘80s by Surinamese artists as well as Dutch artists of Surinamese descent. Some of these songs were very popular on the Surinamese dance floors back then, as well as local clubs in the Netherlands visited by Surinamese youngsters. Most of the songs are considered ‘rare’ by funk and soul aficionados, and the original records are very hard to find and have prices to match this. I even found some of the original ‘45s in record stores in Japan, that’s how far those originals go these days! Technically no traditional Surinamese music, but definitely a perfect example of how the Surinamese went with the flow of the times they lived in. And if you like your share of soul/funk, maybe this is your gateway to something different for a change than the usual James Brown or Kool and the Gang ;)
