There is a reason that Australia never took New Zealand out of their territories list in their constitution. As I understand it (please correct me if I'm wrong), the original plan was to incorporate Australia and New Zealand as one nation, when they gained independence from the UK, but New Zealand had just got done dealing with a really bloody war with the Maori and were worried that the policies of Australia toward the indigenous populations would jeopardise the tenuous peace so they opted to not become part of Australia. Australia didn't take New Zealand out of the constitution because that leaves the door open to them to join later if they decide to. Taking them out would mean that union of New Zealand and Australia would require a plebiscite in both countries but not taking them out means it only would only require New Zealanders' consent. My understanding is that it's just a red tape avoidance measure and not a territorial claim.
@jameskent53516 жыл бұрын
Indigenous relations is an anachronistic reason for not joining federation that's been promoted as part of New Zealand nation building. The actual reasons listed were 1. Cultural differences 2. Distance from Australia making national defence difficult. Which is ironic because New Zealand has specifically been reducing their military for years now under the belief that proximity to Australia and our shared alliance (ANZUS now just AUS & ANZ) will protect them.
@DarthAwar6 жыл бұрын

How is the Australian government going to pay for the hundreds of thousands of personal, or even find enough people to sign up to man this force without causing the economy to collapse and mass civil unrest from their 70% tax rates? A more financially sensible (read: possible) strategy would be the development of a nuclear deterrent if they had the desire to do this.
@DarthAwar6 жыл бұрын
@@ThotPatrol-r9b 1. it is a wish list not a fact and 2. in a perfect world the money would come from corporate and rich people taxes again over the next 15 to 20 years so at least in theory it would not hurt current programs reliant on Government funds but with both China and North Korea getting more aggressive and the EU actually cutting back spending on their militaries as a whole over the last 15 years it might be necessary to bulk up or military defense because even with the Commonwealth our closest allies are New Zealand that while they have an absolutely awesome military are some distance away and do not have a lot of transport for them and they are small and India while large again is still days away from us at best and going outside of the CA we have Japan and it's self defense force that while one of the best Militaries in the world are very small don't have a lot of Transport and needs a Government Vote and an OK from the US to use its military outside of Japan do I want to spend a lot of money of defense no I am not American and sure as hell not Liberal/Republican but I am sure it is at least at the present time necessary to show bullies like North Korea & China 1. They can not intimidate us into taking what they want and 2. That while they might try to force us to give in by force it will cost them gravely and while I love the Americans and they might come to our aid it could be days or even more likely weeks late remember btw China has a base in PNG and are fortifying almost the entire south china sea and forcing other nations to join them through Bribery, Corruption and Blackmail (Philippines as the most obvious but look at any nation targeted by China's Belt & Road Scheme and that is what it is!) I would like to live in a world where we can realistically have just a small Self Defense Force but that is not where the world is going with both China, North Korea (And Russia if we are being Honest!) getting much more aggressive both in actions and building up Nuclear Weapons as well as more traditional style forces we might be only years to 2 decades away from WWIII and we are a huge target for Resources (Natural Gas, Gold, Iron, Uranium, Food, Water, Land, Strategic Military Locations so on!) I do not agree with Conscription AT ALL but maybe do what America does and Advertise, Advertise, Advertise (Schools, Shows, Public Events, TV, Radio, Magazines, Papers, Internet like a lot!) but the good news is that most of the tech is getting less maintenance intensive as well as people dependant so if we modernize we might have a great updated and larger force without as many people needed as we did just 20 years ago!

Biggest is the Fringe festival which is one of the largest arts festivals in Australia and Southern Hemisphere. Goes for about a month, international acts mostly come here and we get a massive influx of tourists. We also used to have the famous Clipsal 500 which is a V8 Supercar race (although this is coming back this year for the first time in a few years but under a different name). - We do have a military weapons testing facility called Woomera which has a tiny town there mainly of the people that work alongside Woomera. Fairly massive in size. It's mainly for Air Force training but there has been weapons grade testing with bombs and stuff made there. - The largest stretch of road with very little people living there is in SA too known as the Nullaboar Plain. Stretches from Coorabie (little locality) all the way to the border of WA. In the last Census that was published, it was like, 50 people. - The largest cattle ranch in the world, Anna Creek. It's basically the size of Israel, about 10 people live there, and it's basically a massive cattle ranch. They get around the place herding on quad bikes.

The paragraph you read suggesting that Australia thinks of New Zealand as part of us was introduced in a misleading way. New Zealand was considering becoming part of Australia at federation and still has the right to join at any time they choose. They probably won't of course. We're very integrated with them in many ways, enough that they got rid of their air force quite some time ago, as they're confident enough that Australia would come to their defence if it ever became necessary.

>AC/DC Was formed in New South Wales *WRONG* AC/DC was formed in Western Australia by the Young brothers (Angus and Malcolm) and original leader singer Bon Scott, after the brothers imigrated to Australia from Scotland in the 1960's. The group, while on a pub tour in the east coasts discovered the rest of the band; got big and then filmed "Long Way To The Top" in Sydney. Bon Scott's bronze statue can be found in the port-town of Fremantle, famously the location where the Australia II was built (the first yacht ever to beat the USA in the America's cup).

Hey, Melbourne has Federation Square which hosts numerous diverse events (more than Sydney probs) i.e. Korean festival and has a lot of parks famously known e.g. botanic garden, Albert Park. Also, it has this annual tennis competition called the Australian Open which invites overseas professional players to compete. It also has Port of Melbourne which is biggest (I'm pretty sure) port in Australia called 'Port of Melbourne' and home to mountains i.e. (again) Mount Dandenong. Furthermore, it has Chadstone - biggest shopping centre in Australia. I'm generally only scratching the surface of Melbourne. In addition, there are great beaches e.g. Sorrento and Nation Gallery of Victoria which hosts numerous artworks e.g. MoMA. This city is the fastest growing in Australia and will soon surpass Sydney in population.
