Geoguessr Pro Challenges a CRACKED AI (Insane Guesses)

In today's video, I'm taking on the Atlas AI which is one of the best Geoguessr AIs available at the moment. This was a terrific challenge, and given that it was trained on 650,000 locations, expect to see some cracked guesses. Enjoy the video:)

Hey zi8gzag! I'm the developer of Atlas, and I had a great time playing these duels with you! Just had some places where I'd like to commentate about my AI's guesses: At 1:56, Atlas guessed in a super northern Russian island that doesn't actually have any coverage. I checked on what went wrong, and this was a rare bug in my road pinpointer program. It looks for the white color of roads on Google Maps, and it seems to have gotten confused and thought those mountains were roads, which is why it guessed there. The road pinpointer is still a work in progress, and I hope to make it a lot better in the future. At 3:48, to answer zi8gzag's question, Atlas can't actually read signs, because the text is too small for it to pick up on. It just made a really good regionguess. Overall, looking forward to your next video taking on the AI with friends!

There is a very real risk of overfitting and memorizing locations. Would be nice to see the AI's confidence of the final guess, as well as confidence values of other guesses.

It was trained on locations directly from Google Maps, not from a Geoguessr map, so it's extremely unlikely that it has seen any of these locations before, and the effects of overfitting are minimal.

@@void_ai Regardless, it would be good to see where the AI's second, third, fourth, etc. choices for where it would have picked. It could provide some insight into the intuition behind the guess

Do you reckon the AI will ever get to the point where it can 5k most rounds once it properly learns how to use road angles? The AI is already great at region guessing so that already massively narrows down the amount of road comparisons it needs to compute. From the footage it seemed like it was just finding the general area and hedging. Once it learns to analyse cross sections, road bends and natural landmarks e.g. rivers, I reckon it could get consistent 5ks.

This version of the AI does take into account the road angle, but it still can't 5k very often. I'm working on improving this, though!

I'd be interested to hear from the creator of the AI on how its doing this. Curious to know what is being taken into consideration- metas, road angles, camera quality, can it read?, etc...

Can’t read or take into account human metas. At a high level you feed a neural network a ton of images and the network learns to pick up on differences in the images of each region to better classify each image into a specific region. The intelligent part is figuring out how to partition the world into regions.

It splits the world into a lot of small squares (the current version uses almost 8000), and then it predicts which square it thinks the image is located in. It can't read, and it mostly looks at car meta and the general landscape to make its guesses

The AI that Rainbolt played against seemed to focus a lot on smudges on the lens, which really simplifies the problem. It's all-in on a hard-to-see meta, and very light on actual geography.

Does the bot isolate certain parts of the image and know where they are (like can they see the green follow car and know N. Macedonia) or do they just see the colors of the image and match the general feel?

This is what happens when the bot uses way more meta than pro meta players. I am pretty sure the bot will be picking up camera glitches, color shades, etc very accurately.

It’s closed source and will continue to be but I may release a similar version of the model code but not the duels interface. I feel like if you want to cheat you’d just use scripts anyway so it doesn’t mayter

Of all the unimpressive things you can make an AI do I think being good at Geoguessr is probably the least impressive^^ Especially if you can't get it to not guess on that russian island way up north where there's no coverage and I believe no cities
