Some advice I like, “Major in something practical, minor in something you love.” - no clue. If you can find something you love, and you can make a living of it, then that is awesome, but whatever pays your bills is more important (to most people). You can always make time for what you are truly passionate when you make enough money working manageable hours.

My mother did not like the rough language on the rig. Her second day, she asked the driller to come to her geologists stand on the rig. She had a dozen fresh, warm, cookies in her shack. She offered to bring enough cookies for the rig crew, and some to take home, if they would stop taking the Lord's name in vain and speak like respectable men. The driller talked to the crew, and from that day on, her well had no profanity, except for one day when a new crew member cursed in her hearing. The next day, no cookies. He got harassed by the crew for messing up their cookies. Never again was the crew denied cookies.

Here is my career path. - Bachelor's of science, geology. Not enough education or experience to get a geology job. - Master's of science, geology. Not enough experience to get a geology job. - PhD in geology. Too much education. Likely will get bored. Might compete with leadership. I have concluded that I am unhirable because my geology degrees did not specialize on petroleum or mining. Had I done a master's thesis focusing on something useful to oil companies, I could have been hired. I went for an interesting PhD topic with tectonics, but am now seen as threatening to every company I apply to because of that 'PhD' title. My advice to anyone thinking about geology is to remember that many of the interesting questions you might have about the Earth are not lucrative and will only lead you down the super competitive academic path.

Hi! I have been considering about taking geology courses and a geology career. I am currently still in high schools and i am an outdoor person and would love to have a job that required me going to mountainous terrain, plains, plateau and any other geological sites. I am currently wandering which stream is best for me and i am hoping to be able to learn more about said streams. As still being in high school my school doesn’t really have geology as part of the academics and so i am unsure on what most geology jobs actually do. So my question is when will i start to learn about the different path to geology? Will this be introduced to me in University or grad school perhaps? Or is this my part in finding out myself? And if it is possible do you have any suggestions on which stream of geology i should consider checking? As i mentioned i love field work or any type of work that involves me going outdoors and traveling to a multitude of places, i also enjoy space and those types of study so i definitely have my eyes on planetary geology. I am also interested on terrain formation such as mountains and how they came to be as well as studying mineral samples and that kind of stuff. Thanks in advance!

Hey, when I first started college It was implied I would do some type of engineering and come to find out my first day of school I hated it. The week before school I visited a salt mine and loved it. I decided I would do mining engineering but my school didn’t offer it and the nearest school required a bachelors of applied science to even apply. I figured geology would compliment it well but I really never was interested in geology from a studying standpoint. I’m on my last year and I will be getting my double major in geology and geophysics. I’ve grown to love geology! Like you said if you truly love the outdoors and love adventure and processes involving the earth, geology is for you. Every class I’ve taken has had a field trip not to mention a summer field class! Geology is a great science to learn and so is geophysics. If your not very strong in math geophysics is by far much harder as you need calculus 1,2,3 and differential equations where as geology only needs 1 and 2 as well as lower level physics compared to geophysics. I’m not the strongest in math but I’ve managed to make it through the math. If you love geology then I’d go for it!

It might be a better pursuit at your age and capacity to leave the petrol field in favor of more sustainable and less damaging technologies. Hey Andrew, it is some what similar to a Russian Education system. For some reason your question did not pop up in my comments feed up until now otherwise I would have addressed it in my Q&A. Sit down I think about what is that that you are passionate about. If money, education, and other factors were not an obstacle what would you want to do? If your dream carrier is not in your dream department see if you can switch to that department. You are still very young and it is never too late to switch and pursue your passion. My mom worked as a high school teacher for over 20 years, when we moved to Canada she did not know what to do. She went back to University and got a whole new degree to become a nurse and is now very happy with her new carrier. Also, Don't be afraid to ask your friends and your parents for advice, see what they think. You might not take their advice or even like it but it might give you some ideas :)

I am a history major right now. I’m in my junior year & I’m thinking about moving into the sciences, such a geology. One of my concerns is my income after graduation. Are there opportunities to make a solid amount of money?

The only decent paying geo jobs are in oil and gas (extremely long hours and horrible conditions) outside of that in the U.S. opportunities are gov't jobs (highly competitive) or environmental (extremely low pay). My advice for those in college would be to change majors to some sort of engineering or computer science and thank me later.

Hi! Thank you for this video... it's good to hear all these answers! But I wonder: Aren't you as a petroleum geologist in a huge ethical conflict with yourself because burning fossil fuels is such a huge driver for climate change and we, as humans, should actually have stopped extracting it and burning it yesterday already - and invest in renewable energy instead? From an environmentalist perspective, isn't petroleum exploration so very "outdated"? I am interested in geology and I am considering doing a degree, but I am wondering... that would be a deal breaker for me... I want to protect the planet instead of making things worse... the drilling has to stop for urgent environmental reasons and I don't want to be one of the guys doing it just because my employer tells me to...
