I am a mostly a fan of heavy metal, but the “collaboration” album by George and Earl has to be in my top-5 favorite albums of all time. I’ve listened and enjoyed so so many times. Never gets old!

Late 80s, when Ibanez guitars got really popular, I always got a copy of their yearly catalog. The strat types always looked cool and had great pickups, etc. But there were always the George Benson signature models, and two things were undeniable: First, I wanted one. Second, even though I was a huge fan, it spoke to how much impact he had. And Ibanez still makes them.

I had the joy of seeing George Benson perform WITH Minnie Ripperton at Southern Illinois University's 'Mississippi River Festival' 40+ years ago. Ms. Ripperton opened the show ... then later joined George Benson on stage for several numbers. The stars were aligned that night for this starstruck 17 year-old. First ... we rolled the dice on tickets and said we'll take whatever we can get at the box office. Even then ... I knew to ask if they had any cancellations or no shows. Sho nuf' we scored two 5th row tix. Nice! Next ... since we knew the layout of the stage area we snuck back to an area where a bridge-like structure connected backstage to the dressing rooms. It was maybe three feet off the ground. We hung out before the show knowing that George Benson would soon cross that bridge to the backstage area. Several security folks said he was already backstage ... but we knew better. Within about five minutes we spotted GB. At the last minute we jumped up on the bridge (non threatening) and GB kind of snickered at the 2 youngins... walked over to us, shook our hands, and thanked us for coming. An amazing show followed. What a thrill!
