There are a lot of jobs drummers out there now... my neighbor is one of them . ... you just got to avoid all the mainstream crap ... it has no appreciation for real Beauty and Art in many cases . I'm from the Philadelphia area and back around 2003-2005 I noticed a lot of younger kids high school-aged and college-age all getting really heavy into jazz . I haven't been back to Philly in 12 and a half years now so who knows there's probably a lot more of a stronghold of jazz there more than ever before since there seems to be a new Resurgence and appreciation for all the Jazz Legends who came from Philly

Check out Max Roach and Tony Williams. Can't say they are "less is more," but they know how to use subtlety, understatement, melodic playing and silence to really fill out their music.

Just WOW. The Benson, Jones collaboration with the tap dancer Milt Buckner was amazing in its explanation of rhythm.

That's Jimmy Slyde tap dancing whereas Milt Buckner is the organist. Xavion Glover told me that Mr. Slyde used to also hang with the great drummer Roy Haynes but at least this session with Slyde and Papa Jo was documented for us all to enjoy. Now there's a WHOLE lot of rhythm going down!

The double CD of this session is indispensable! Not just music, but great interviews with "Papa" talking about early drumming techniques, the old days, etc. Hard to find but worth it for drummers and Jo Jones fans! It's simply called "The Drums by Jo Jones".

I remember reading an interview with Louie Bellson, where he said that he and Buddy Rich were once asked in a TV show who their favorite drummer was. Both agreed on "Papa" Jo Jones, so I went out and got some of his must-have recordings. 20 years later, he is still my favorite drummer, too.

Pity Rich couldn't have learnt to smile like Jones when he played. I know it sacrilege but I think Rich was so overrated compared to so many of these black guys around at the time.

Really beautiful post. Thanks. I was lucky to meet Jo Jones and George Benson in the 70s. Serendipity! Mr. Jones I met on the train from Boston to NYC in 1978 when I was going for a vibe lesson with Dave Samuels. I recognized him and said hi. He saw my stick bag and said, "Sit down." I was transfixed for 4 hours. Mr. Benson I met at the Jazz Workshop in Boston around 1971-72. My dad took me to see him. They did 4 night stands with an afternoon Sunday jam session. My dad took me to the Sunday afternoon. I could not believe guys sitting in who were my age (18-22 range)-and were good. On a break I asked my dad if it would be ok to tell Mr. Benson how great he was and go up to him. Dad said sure. So, I did. Mr. Benson was so nice, gracious and cool. I never asked for autographs. My dad said that was rude.
