I went to George’s house to help setup a new keyboard with a producer I work for as an engineer and he showed us his guitar practice and a bunch of tunes for a couple hours and then we all sipped on some crazy expensive whiskey. One of the best nights of my life

I think that after the gig, when I got home, I would take that white guitar, put it on a stand in the living room and just stare at it for the rest of the night trying to understand how George could find the music he played on it! Took him all of ten seconds to get his tone out of it. The band's guitarist strapped on a guitar but then just took it back off and spent the rest of the song just watching George. Can't say I blame the guy. I think of George Benson walked on stage when I was doing a gig, I probably wouldn't be able to play Mary Had a Little Lamb. This must have been such an honor.

I met george in 92 when he had a tour in argentina; he held a guitar clinic to a limited audience and I was there. I asked george about his picking technique, he said just play softly. well I have to say he is a very very very humble guy, I even took a photo and got his signature. It was just like a dream come true, as a jazz guitar student.

I saw many of the greats perform live in concert in the 70's and 80's. Michael, Prince, Earth, Wind & Fire, U2, Bowie, Heart, Bryan Adams. All of their shows were spectacular. But my favorite all time live concert moment was George Benson playing "This Masqurade" at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. George and the band played the song down just like the record and when they were done the stage lights went down the spotlight hit George and his guitar and he proceeded to play the song again by himself using the craziest jazz block chords, scatting and guitar ad libs I have ever heard in my life. I could not believe what I was hearing!!! I remember looking at my girlfriend in shock I was so amazed at what I was hearing. I grew up listening to herbie, chick, weather report, etc... And my father was a well known tap dancer in 50's who performed with Duke, Basie and Nat King Cole and my Godfather is the late great Erroll Garner. So I had heard some amazing jazz musicians before that night I saw George. Hands down the best live concert moment I ever saw! 🎼🔥👍💥

I once met George Benson; he was unexpectedly in the audience at a Roy Ayers gig in Ronnie Scotts around the turn of the millennium. He went up & did an impromptu tune with the band much like this, borrowing their guitar... Afterwards I eagerly sought him out in the audience as a big fan to thank him for his music (loved his Cookbook era) & as a jazz guitarist myself ask for any tips at all. He was super nice & friendly, but said he only had a few minutes to spare as had to chat to friends & to advise any nuances on the guitar would take way longer than that for him to even begin... Was just an honour to meet him I thought... I was at the club with my brother & at that time we looked much alike... My brother had been missing for ages so I looked around & eventually went to the upstairs bar to find him looking very confused... He told me George had appeared just offering tips on the guitar & they'd gone aside for a long advisory chat... He was too bewildered to ask why Mr Benson had proffered to give him so many tips & too starstruck to question why or really take it all in (he's also a jazz guitarist however so it fit in a bizarre & cosmically intuitive way for him!)... Turns out George wasn't remotely giving me any brush off earlier & after catching up with his buddies had later pulled my brother aside thinking he was me to really help out with some advice. I'll always really really rate him as a legendary man just for taking that time for me even if I didn't get to share it first hand!

It does no such thing. A lot of music and musicians in 1978 when George Benson recorded the seminal love "On Broadway" track sucked as well, KZbin only surfaces the good stuff for your rose-tinted glasses. It's not just that you're old, it's that your ears have shut down and you're not trying to find awesome new music. That's your right, the best from 100 years of recorded music will inevitably outclass whatever this decade can contribute, but spare us your dismissal of music made today.

Been down that rabbit hole man. Bought and sold several guitars hoping, "this is the one." I'm fairly good, these guitars are as good as they come, but in no way can that combination even approach the virtuosity of George Benson. At times, I hav wanted to burn guitars, throw them in the river or smash them with a hammer. It's a false church! As so clearly demonstrated here, it took George maybe ten seconds to get his tone and get acclimated to this little overdrive shredder guitar, a guitar I would not even pick up, and tear the roof off the house with it. He has always been and always will be my single biggest influence, even though I can not play anything remotely like him. This video is yet again an inspiration, a call to get back and practice more today. Thanks as always George Benson. Truly the best ever.

OMG... I have loved George Benson and his incredible style since I worked on one of his concerts at Central Michigan University back in the 1970's. The man was so nice, he even invited us all back to his dressing room for champagne after the concert. Total class and style!

Yes indeed......George Benson. A long long time ago George use to work for my uncle in the roofing business when George was just getting his start. The biscuit and gravy district of Downtown Pittsburgh. Ever since then, George Benson has been a household name in my family and my Grandfather always said that if you ever are in the presence of George...........you are in the presence of greatness...far beyond royality, you are in the presence of the right hand man of God. How true he was........................

I saw George in 1989 with McCoy Tyner in Antibes at the Festival du Jazz. George started playing and he was in the zone, his guitar was singing with him and they would trade the lead and you felt he had no idea where the song would go ... he was just following where his guitar took him and it was pure genius and magical and goosebumps and I'll never forget that night. My head was burning because I was so overwhelmed with emotion. Thank you George.

@@willmurray222 Yeah I remember him as a damn good jazz guitarist from before he got into vocal stuff. Trouble is the playing took a back seat to the vocals latterly, but I guess it made him more money which, speaking as a musician, I can't blame him for doing. Nat King Cole went down that route too, as did Louis Armstrong. ;)

And a totally different style of guitar to boot, solid body rock guitar, thin line, different neck and profile to George's more traditional Gibson / Gretsch style larger hollow body, more acoustic in nature. Shows us his genius in being able to still sound like George - he could play a broom with 2 nails and a wire between... What a man! Thanks for huge upload.

having been into george starting in the late 70's ,i consider myself extremely "blessed" to watch and hear george in this clip. we have been given a man's accumulated skill and maturity that he's acquired over the years . this for me is way richer and deeper than anything we got from the early george . what a precious historical document . it's just like old good wine . george and the boys caught the magic that night .pity the vid quality is so crap.but despite the poor vid quality we can still catch and feel the exceptional performance . i suspect george was front and centre for this and really tried hard for the guys that called him on stage because they honoured him so much .that's what made it way better than anything i've seen heard him do.he really put his whole heart into this plus a bit more for the guys .it was a personal thankyou from george to them because they were smart enough to recognise more than most people what he's capable of ..they made it hard for him and set the bar really high when they addressed him as THE GREAT GEORGE BENSON . but george jumped up and over with ease .and brought the GREATNESS with him

Martin Fisher not according to Santana, it is Gabor Szabo who showed new ways of playing( jazz) guitar. GB is phenomenal I agree but, as also being a Hungarian myself, and them both having been friends at one time in the past and attending the same school I heard that GB took some tunes that was written by GSZ. I wonder if anybody has any comment or info about this...

They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway They say there's always magic in the air But when you're walkin' down the street And you ain't had enough to eat The glitter rubs right off and you're nowhere They say the women treat you fine on Broadway But lookin' at them just gives me the blues 'cause how ya gonna make some time When all you got is one thin dime And one thin dime won't even shine your shoes They say that I won't last too long on Broadway I'll catch a grey hound bus for home they all say But they're dead wrong I know they are 'Cause I can play this here guitar And I won't quit till I'm a star on Broadway Quelle: LyricFind

Anybody else just realize the influence Benson probably had on Raul Midon. So so similar in their timing, licks, skats, tone. Can’t believe it took me 15 years. Any Raul Midon fans out here? I’m realizing now that he’s like the love child of Stevie Wonder and George Benson
