He was my Coach at Soccer Camp when I was 13. Super Sweet Dude. He was reading down the roster and he got to my name… “Brennon McKibbin…. (MacGibson, as he pronounced it. “ARE YOU IRISH..?” As he asked me. “Right then…” And then when I was playing, he’d be on the sidelines saying, yelling at me… “GET IT!!!! GET IT, GIBBY!!! GIBBY MY SON..!!!” I didn’t even know who he was. But he was a good person to me. LEGEND I’m Proud to have him be my Coach. And to recognize me.

Lovely interview. Beneath the bravado and sordid headlines, there was a sweet, shy, human being with primal doubts and insecurities; like we all have. Fame kills. Rest in peace, George. 💜

Maybe the best ever interview with George. None of the Miss World nonsense. George was a highly intelligent man, a very high IQ from what we understand. Such an element of sadness about him though. A tragedy and yet he lives on in our memory. What a footballer, none better before, none better since. The original Rock Star.

I have known a few people who fought with alcoholism, and it gains a grip on people. I look back with sadness on what happened to Best, but it is also good that people remember his sporting genius. And as Jeremy D said, he was a highly intelligent man.

Jeremy dee, its becouse hes sober. I have saw george in alot of tv interviews and you can tell strait away that hes had a drinck. He starts of cockey and even down grading himself but hes not drunck hes just had enough to not be out of order and he struggles through interviews trying to act sober. But when totally sober hes great to listen too. And you get fed up listening to hes 3 or 7 miss world conquests. He really only had 2. Mary stavin and majorie wallace. Caroline moore won miss great britain not miss world. So he says 3 or 4 but do you notice he never names them all. And majorie wallace was only a 5 job lol then got him into alot of trouble saying he stole her money, coat, passport. When he starts on about the miss worlds most if not all of its all lies. He had the money scatterd over the bed story with 30 grand and the irish waiter saying where did it all go wrong mr best? Didnt happen. George admitted it himself, yes he dated mary for 2 years i remember that, but that story was made up becouse it sounded good. Stavin even admitted it didnt happen and said george was bad for making storys up just for the press to pay him alot of money. She said when i mett him in 1981 he was so skint i had to buy him clothes and he was basicly homeless he was staying at is inlaws so i rented out a flat for us and kept him going in drinck till he started to make a bit of money wich wasnt much? He was just earning a few hundred a week if that, i was still making alot of money modeling and being miss world pays well for a while. But i was shocked at how skint george was. As i knew alot about him and he was never skint as far as i had knew. But this was 1981 8 years since he retired then went to america but angie had got rid of him and he had no option but to come home to earm a living as he was now 36 and wasnt known in the states he had be in london or manchester to earn a living and for about 6 month no one wanted to give him any work becouse he was untrustable due to being drunck, he had to get old friends to help him out as he wasnt as famous as he was alot of these friends didnt want to know. George told me all this while we waited on better days, he said a will get work mary once the public know am back to stay. A said what are you going to do or what do you want to do and he said i dont have a clue, all i know is football and he ended up playing for bournmouth just to for money and he lasted 3 weeks becouse he was still good but never the same as he was or even near it. He even said angie had to pay for his plane fair home then the taxman said he owed 32 grand from playing for fulham it was a real blow when he was skint but he was adamant he didnt owe anything as he had paid tax all his life plus the clubs deal with that. And that made sense. So he declared himself bankrupt but he was skint any way and he laughed at it one day. But i could see he only lived for the day and didnt care what came next. As if he was still very famous he would always get bye, but in is way but a told him he wasnt in that position anymore and had to get a job that meant a good weakly income like tv work but he had to turn up at the right time and not when he wanted too, then his drincking was still bad. I had to leave him.

You can't help but Love Him. It is sad that he died too young but if you think about it, like he said he lived a full life and did achieved things in his life that many only dream of. He packed in more living in a few years that many don't in an entire lifetime.

So do I! 4 yrs since ur comment. Only stumbled on this interview lately. Seems those who feel too much struggle to protect their inner self and tend to self-medicate with external stuff. Esp if they dont talk and share the pain maybe for fear of rejection or criticism.

For those who can handle it alcohol is a nice aspect to life. Sadly George was maybe not in control of his alcohol addiction as he portrays here. Part of alcoholism is the extent to which the person lies to themselves. His comment about having a drink when he feels like it really sums it up for me.
