I live not far from his house, George's father Dickie who is often forgotten in the whole story, was so dignified and normal, just like the rest of the family, I cant imgine the many nights Dickie spent thinking of things, to have a son whose talent impacted World Football, but then at the same time having cope with his wifes alcoholism and then George's. Dickie deserved so much better, he gave Manchester United and football a hero, and he never wanted to make money and be rich on George name. What a father and what a human being.

Genius...... Belfast is so proud of our georgie best. Even Pele said George best was the greatest Played on muddy pitches like farmers fields, leather ball weighed a stone, rode hard tackles with ease, had speed to burn, could tackle, could dribble. Played with a smile on his face Loved life, lived life

Mark, no mark you could buy him today but the goverment would need to start printing new 50 pound notes as fast as they could none stop for 5 years lol no your right. He was special. He had this aura about him? What i loved about george best was when he played he rememberd that it was only just a game and your meant to just enjoy it. Yes he was the bravest player in the world but when he tried things and if it didnt come off he would still smile and when it did come off he would just put 1 arm up in the air and walk slowly back to start agaian. People dont notice that alot. He played mostly for the fans than the club wich is what made him the greatest ever. Today how many times do you see a player always looking over to there boss when they score or miss? All the time. George put his trademark 1 arm up for the fans to see becouse he knew the boss saw what he just did. Now thats what put millions of kids onto the streets to play football. It was george best. Becouse he changend the game, but in a way most kids at age 6 to 8 years old wouldnt notice, they just saw this great player always smiling when he didnt score and didnt smile as much when he did score. He made the game look great to play even if you wernt that good at it then so what try again. I was already playing before i saw best playing. But the thing is i have saw alot of young boys being shouted at by mad managers for making a mistake and again and again then the boy in a way is bullied out and away from the game. And he is only 9 or 10 years old. Best changend that but it still happend alot. Now a days you never see kids playing football on the streets or rough grass. Maybe thats why at age 12 there 6ft tall and 19 stone. A dont thinck thats natural. I have george best to thanck becouse he made me smile on a park at a time when i didnt know you could for making a mistake. Becouse kids forgett even the simplest of basics like 'ITS ONLY A GAME, and games are meant to be enjoyed not to go through 90 minutes of pure fear wich only makes them play worse anyway! So thancks george and rip you were the greatest.

If he was 21 today he probably wouldn’t be the George best that we knew and loved because this heavily toxic social media and technology driven modern society stifles freedom of expression and creativity, its why we don’t see any characters in football anymore. Its like when people say if Roy keane or Bryan Robson were around today they’d show these young footballers how to be leaders, but if Roy Keane had been born into and brought up in this modern era he more than likely wouldn’t be Roy keane as he was a product of a time that no longer exists.

Pele classed him as the best he’d ever seen so that’s good enough for me … was at his testimonial @ Windsor Park on a very wet and windy evening…. Callum made an appearance at the start as a very young boy …. Great lineup that night and special memories made personally for me … RIP Georgie Boy 👍👍❤️

I remember seeing this on tv when george died and you could feel as if every football player and fan who saw him play were crying as they watched this. At the end when georges dad dickie said to the press "now could yous all please leave us alone to grieve in peace" strait away i just thought of all those years when the press wouldnt leave georges family to live a normal life and heres wee dickie now going to bury his son and just wants to be left alone for even 1 day of his life. Becouse the press pushed his wife in an alcoholic then she died at only age 55. I felt tears in my throat for him, my heart went out to him! He was a strong man! George rip and thancks

When most people get a liver transplant they say “great I’ve got a second chance of life” problem was Bestie said “great I can start drinking again” and that’s sad. As someone who spent years with a substance abuse problem and I know how hard it is as it’s a daily grind thinking about something that you’re not allowed anymore but it consumes your every thought. You can have all the love and support but at the end of the day it’s something nobody else can do for you or partially do for you. You have to to do it for yourself not for someone else but for yourself as it’s controlling and destroying every part of your life, body and mind. It’s a shame he couldn’t stop but I know how he felt and with the new liver he thought I’ll just have a few drinks on the odd special occasion like birthdays, Christmas, weddings, anniversaries and the list will go on and you make promises to yourself which you end up breaking and you say to yourself “I fucked up today but I’ll start again tomorrow” but tomorrow never comes and you lose faith again and you’re soon back at square one. Been there so many times it’s not funny, I’m just glad my family stuck by me despite how bad things got and I’m glad I’ve got a great support system in place, but I had to do everything myself to help myself for me not for anyone else

Am forever a City fan, but i gotta say that I used to really enjoy the derby matches of the sixties and early seventies .... United with Best, Law, and Charlton ... and City's brilliant trio of Bell, Lee and Summerbee .... George Best's biggest mate was Mike Summerbee, and i have to admit that Bestie was a terrific player, he was such a sad loss when he basically just self destructed.

I,m a Liverpool fan always will be ,but for me George was the absolute greatest when you apply terrible pitches ,crunching tackles and his early retirement from elite level . He must have missed Matt Busby so much ....I wish he was still around and I think one of his less known talents was his generosity with his time .He always made a case of visiting our valley in Wales to visit a young Man U . fan who was disabled . Always will be remembered , no fear of that ,,A truly great player !!..

It's really sad Pele died recently. Maradona also and they all did so much good with the poor and always had time for kids and the ordinary working class fans. I remember Pele visiting Craven Cottage. I think at the time Fulham were in the old 2nd Division. I saw a documentary of when Maradona was at Napoli and he was much the same and never forgot his working class roots and was great with the fans. Not many top players are humble and good with the kids and fans today like Mbappe etc.

Getting drunk gives you some really good times. It's a very effective way of blocking out negative thoughts and feelings. Drinking hard gives a person a guaranteed good time. . A much needed relief from stress. Stress can build up to the point where it's literally unbearable...Georges life was put under the microscope by the kind of intrusive journalism that would contribute to the premature deaths of various celebrities like the much hounded Amy Winehouse . George Best was one of the first superstar footballers ever and despite being of strong character was as vulnerable and unprepared as anyone else. Too much scrutiny fuelled his need to get away from it all in alcohol. A great man nonetheless and a genius with a ball.

Stephen ellis, well said stephen and so true. I didnt get the chance to meet george but i would have liked to have mett him. But i know lots of people that did meet him and they all said he was a great guy to talk too and 1 of my friends who mett george at glasgow airport said it felt strange when i saw him i said to my wife thats george best over there awe no way i have to go over i always said i would if i ever seen him but my adrenalin was pumping and i knew i would start to stutter as you do when your adrenalin goes. And my wife said just dont jump in and say daft stuff just be yourself he is a shy person at heart too. So as i walked over with a pen and paper he looked at me and smiled thats why my wife said take a pen and a bit of paper for an autograph becouse i read he can be very wary of who approches him and my friend said no wonder the guy has been batterd, punshend about at least a thousand times over the years as this was 1994 and hes even had his skull smashed open more than once he has the scar on his face just above his eye. That would drive any one to drinck. So when he smiled my friend just relaxed and george said to him hi ya and my friend said ok george and best said ye not to bad thancks, yourself and my friend said great now that i have mett you and best laughed. Now the strange bit i said was becouse here was my friend talking to the greatest and most iconic man ever and it was just like talking to one of your own pals, he didnt look at what you were wearing, he didnt look at your hair to see if it was clean or not, he just looked at my face and eyes, hes got the most darkest eyes i have ever seen. I knew they were very dark but in the flesh he had eyes that dark you couldnt paint them darker. He seemend very shy and with drawn. He didnt talk about football but my friend had to tell him what his favourite george best goal was and when he told him it was that famous lob over pat jeninngs against spurs in 1971 george said yes i hear about that goal alot and its maybe my favourite too but i change it every month and my mate laughed as did george, george said its usually that famous one i scored in america in 1981 but it is hard to say wich is my best. Then my friend got his autograph and george had to move as his flight had just come in to take him back to london he said, he said i was in glasgow and edinburgh for 4 days doing book signings in shops and did alot of after dinner speeches. He said infact i just did one last night in here meaning the airport. George must have been making alot of money still when he started doing the after dinner circuit becouse he was getting paid between 2 and 5 grand just for eating a 3 course meal then standing up and talking for 5 minutes about his playing days with a few jokes as well. And he could do 2 a day. Every day. Thats at least 35 thousand pound a week. But he would disappear for a week as we know. Now and again. Leaving red faces all round. But for a player from the 1960s and he never went into management plus his reputation for heavy drincking and just disappearing for weeks, he always seemend to do well money wise, plus he stayed in a posh dear up market flat in chelsea. But i believe alot of companys used his name so in a way he got paid for nothing, just for his name alone. He just lived for the day and with football he gave us and millions of others i thinck i would do the same. What a man, what a player, rip george and thanks for the memories

No question the greatest but inner demons consumbed him . Imagine him playing today in his prime how much would he be worth !!. Too many nancy boy fall over at a tap over paid knobs playing top line football. Hope the England gitls win cause frankly they show up the men !!!.

sad when he died but how was he able to get 2, not 1, but 2 liver transplants especially when the Doctors knew he would still be drinking the equivalent of 3x bottles of whiskey a day?

Alcoholism is a product of having nothing else to do after the highs of youth but also it stops you looking. I have many interests snd hobbies I'm always aware it's looking over my shoulder. Now my younger brother has advanced dementia and I have a heart condition the Alcohol is barging in and it does offer so much but probably won't deliver, rather like smoking which I did pretty much kick. But hey better dead than dementia.
