George Best was simply the best footballer in the world at the time. He lost the fire in his belly early on, and he quit the game in 1972. Of course, it was essentially a long slow slide into an alcoholics death. Very sad, but as they say, he did it his way. It's worth remembering that at the time he played the pitches weren't pristine and well cared for - they were waterlogged, full of holes, and uneven. Just extraordinary. Why did people want to fight him? Well, look what personalities go through today, it's no different. He could never again be the "man on the street" after his football days.
