3:53 This Malawian is saying there were more than 60 employees from Mozambique, so this is the reason why we say there’s no unemployment problem in South Africa, but rather a problem of illegal immigration.

Its not about cheap labour, its about not following structural building guidelines and adhering to them as the guy is clearly pointing out that the supporting pillars where far apart, structurally itbwas unsound this had to be directed to the structural contractor, the structural engineer, and the building inspectorate department of George, who assessed and passed every level, proof of proper reinforcement, pillar placement, concrete thickness and correct MPA, etc the workers are not to blame period

Who was the architect? Who was the contractor? Was this a BBBEE project? Did they follow an open and transparent tender process? They hired illegal workers, there have been other interviews with the workers and they have stated they are illegals of their own accord(that one was from Malawi) , the man they spoke to was only 18. If they are hiring an 18 year old illegal Malwian, how likely is it that one of the people either under the rubble or who once worked on this was under age?

Such an incident is not of any surprise to me. It is amazing how many role players you get in such projects, who simply provide signatures on documents without doing their work properly. Your architect, structural engineer (working remotely, away from the site), contractor (the useless one with the bakkie and phone glued to his ear), the subcontractor (the poor unqualified guy doing most of the work) and the NHBRC inspector that never inspects (but charges for the registration of the plan). Just went through a nightmare of building a new property in Kouga, hence know all about these sad practises! So, I doubt it, if even, the engineer, will give you the correct information.

I think that the DA and the contractors, development company are rushing around tryying to sort out this miss. Illegal immigrants, cheap labour, bypassung the Department of Labour, and labour regulations. As well as issues with regulations on site. Where were the foreman and inspectors 24/7 on site. Unqualified workers? Substanard materials, cutting corners. What could possibly go wrong? HUMAN NEGLIGENCE AND ERROR.

I find it strange that if the person was aware of the design flaws why did he remain on site and did not warn his co-workers. If a person is aware of an unsafe condition at his workplace he has the responsibility to bring it under the attention of his supervisor and vacate the area until it is safe. If his supervisor do not want to listen to the advice of the worker, the worker could have reported the matter to the authorities. The last thing any company want to experience is to have injuries and fatalities at there place of work. Our harts goes out to those who got injured and died.

You know it is easy to ask the worker he can say anything that people can eat for cake. How does he know about pillars ,concrete , reinforce steel and so and so on. We deliver bricks and I had to go to a building site once to see about the workers demanding that my crane operator put the packs of bricks on the first level of the building or they do not sign for the bricks. I refused and ask the lazy laborer who will take responsability if the slab can't carry 20 to 25 tons of bricks at one unseported space. So ja if you can not calculate that you must just carry the bricks up wheel barrow by wheel barrow and spred bricks evenly where they build. That is all you can do otherwise go studdy then you are in charge and know about load bearing. Stupiddety and lazyness can kill people.

This was not a council building the plans were drawn up and passed for development last year the company Neo Trend Group ice projects are a private construction company they are registered with NHBS it appears like the developer in this case used a lot of possibly unqualified Labour to Cary out some of the work workers from Malawi and Zimbabwe possibly cheap labour the responsibility should fall on the site engineer and the site foreman possible scenario the cement mix was substandard and not up to spec and the concrete support pillars did not have enough steel reinforcement and perhaps for the size there was not enough support pillars this building was a 5 storey apartment block with underground carpark and 42 flats this is quite a large structure but this is all speculation untill the full investigation is done which will take a long time they are still trying to Rescue any workers that might still be alive before attempting the massive task of lifting large bases of concrete a big thanks to all the rescue workers who are involved in this operation

Totally reasonable assumption by the worker. There are other possibilities, such as poor material, haste, structural overload. But more pillars would not have been a mistake, all things considered.

Usually, these buildings collapse when the building contractor did not follow the struct instructions of the engineer regarding the binding guidelines of the steel at the ground level section of the pillars. This would not have been negligence on the part of the structural engineer, nor the steel supplier, who always follow rules regarding this. 1 inch of steel wiring not bound correctly or at the exact overlap length can cause an entire building to collapse. The onus falls on the building contractor to follow the guidelines set about by the engineer. Suspect there was an error in calculation somewhere, or just blatant neglect/ignorance.

All companies do that now. This is a sad reality. They feel South Africans are too expensive and always on strike and expect people to work for cheap labor. Why do you think they all are fighting for foreigners in this country to stay and take the Minister of DOHA to court every week. Even our own politicians are fighting for them. We South Africans are not loved by our own leaders. No wonder the disrespect from our neighbors.

Contractor, Procurement team and the person that approved the candidate as the right person for the job must answer, you can clearly hear that his gentleman being interviewed is not qualified to be on that site late along to work there. That has been the challenge in South Africa that, companies look for cheap labour and compromise safety and quality to save costs.
