I’ve never seen these old clips of George Carlin! Only discovered him during the pandemic & saw the ones from his late 40s & onward. He was awesome 😅

Look for the early ones from the 60's, you won't believe the difference.

His bit about cleaning out the refrigerator is hysterical too. Wish I still had his albums

Luckily people have preserved almost or nearly anything you ever listened too. If you remember the album names just type them into youtube or wherever and enjoy!

I didn't realize as far back as 1971 they were going on about playing records backwards nonsense. Thought that was just in the 1980s, George again ahead of the times as always.

The first instance of backward recording goes back to 1959 in a song titled Car Trouble by The Eligibles. The Beatles used it in 1966 on Rain from the Revolver album.

Carlin's first time on The Tonight Show was when Mort Sahl hosted. It's on KZbin.

Actually, his first time was with Jack Paar in October 1960, when he was still part of a duo with Jack Burns. He did appear with Mort when Mort was one of the tryout hosts in the interim period after Paar left for good. This was before NBC finally landing on some Carson fella. LOL

I see the "dot crawl" in this kinescope. That means it's possible that color recovery is possible. It's more of a process in PAL. Not sure if it's been tried on NTSC kinescopes since usually most NTSC kinescopes utilized B&W rasters (recording TV's). This one obviously utilized a color raster.

It's impossible with ntsc

Do you have additional kinescopes of The Tonight Show? This excerpt isn't included in Carson Entertainment Group's holdings.

The Tonight Show didn't move to beautiful downtown Burbank until 1972 so this was in NYC. Johnny had taken the show occasionally to CA for a week, which is why the "both coast" comment. In retrospect, I actually preferred the NY shows because I was introduced to a LOT of east coast artists as a result, from opera singers and Broadway actors/actresses and non artist celebs who didn't get to the west coast. Once he moved, it became more about movie celebs and since I live on the WC and there were movie magazines . . . meh.

No, this was definitely Burbank here. You can tell by the shot of the audience section at the start - taller and much more capacity than the NY studio. And then when Carlin goes over to sit down, the layout of the set and the same desk that was used in Burbank the first couple of years. The show started doing those one or two week visits to NBC Burbank in 1969 or 70, so this appears to be during one of those trips. As you said, Carson later decided to make California the permanent location in 1972. They then did a few brief visits back to NY for a year or so then never went back.
