It's just before the start of the 2012 pheasant shooting season and George's cover crops are being destroyed. Boar are back in the area and hitting the maize. He's got to move them off the ground in Sussex or risk ruining the shoot. We join him as he tries to drive the crop through then lamp them taking out some decent foxes for good measure.

Why shoot wild boar?
Wild boar were once native to Great Britain but became extinct more than 300 years ago. Following escapes or deliberate releases from wild boar farms from the 1980s, they have now established breeding populations in the wild including Kent and East Sussex in the South-East of England, Dorset, Devon and the Forest of Dean in the South-West, and parts of Scotland. DEFRA estimates the current population at around 500 in the established colonies. Local wildlife managers estimate it at nearer 5,000.
Wild boar are omnivorous and approximately 400 species of plants and animals have been reported to be part of their diet. Their habit of rooting through the floor of woodland and pasture leaves a clear indicator of their presence. They will take both eggs and nestlings of ground-nesting birds and can damage crops, gamebird release pens and game feeders. Damage to agriculture can also be extensive and concerns have been raised regarding collisions with traffic. Boar have no natural predators in the UK meaning culls are necessary to control population growth.
Wild boar are susceptible to the same diseases as domestic pigs and therefore have the potential to spread infectious disease such as swine fever, foot & mouth and Aujesky’s disease (Gow, 2002; Natural England, 2007).
To read the DEFRA wild boar action plan, visit www.britishpigs.org.uk/feralwi...
Why shoot foxes?
The British red fox is widespread across the whole of mainland Britain and Ireland. The best estimate of the current British fox population is 240,000 adults in spring, to which a production of 425,000 cubs is added annually. The fox has no natural predator and for the population to remain stable, 425,000 foxes must therefore die each year.
Fox numbers need to be managed and controlled to prevent the predation of lambs, piglets reared outdoors, free range and domestic poultry. Foxes can also have a significant impact on vulnerable species of ground nesting birds such as black grouse, partridge, lapwing and curlew (Bealey, Green, Robson, Taylor & Winspear, 1999).
In order to protect such species while they are breeding, conservators and gamekeepers aim to control fox numbers, particularly from late winter to early summer. Foxes are also controlled around pheasant and partridge rearing and release pens in late summer and autumn. Overall, the direct cost to UK agriculture from fox predation has been estimated at £12 million annually (UK Government figures)

What a guy, so many championships, medals, world records, european records, British records etc and no mention of him anywhere except on here with us. This man deserves a mention elsewhere. The sports guy on Radio5 Chris Evans show mentioned someone who had won 7 world titles and said " has anyone won any more", yes he is here.

It's amazing how many people post negative comments having no knowledge of countryside whatsoever, they base there comments on opinion and not fact. I,m sure if these people had grown up in the countryside there views would totally different. A little knowledge is dangerous.

No native species that should not have to be culled when overpopulation management is necessary but boar are keystone species and foxes help keep the rabbit population down and invasive grey squirrels

just a thought, if you let the fox go for the night and clean up the boar, won't the fox be there for the following night? I suppose that works in reverse too. hope you finally got the boars, and excellent shooting of 200+ foxes. I also liked how you explained the pheasant off it's perch. Nice work George

This is what badger hunting should be like. Hunters should have to have a certain caliber bullet, a minimum of 5 years shooting experience and add it on to their license. Also a 'tag' system like in the US, where hunters who meet these criteria can buy a 'badger tag' which allows them to shoot a maximum number of badgers on each site per year, all shot badgers must be handed in and not kept. This would help keep a stable population while not doing too much harm to the badgers.

Lighting animals with artificial light sources during a hunt as well as shooting from cars and other verhicles is forbidden in Germany. I think it is a good idea to prevent ethics in hunting.

I don't get these British hunting videos, they have foxes everywhere, prancing around in plain sight, several per field. I've lived most of my life in a country like that and the only time when I saw a fox was when I traveled to a forested mountainside. There was always a plenty of red deer and hares, it's not like the place was lifeless.

+Jacob-Carl Pauw (7foxd3200) they are over populated in areas of where the farms are and they bite the live stock on the legs witch leads to infection and they die. or they just kill the live stock stright up. they are a pest in most ares of australia

+Jacob-Carl Pauw (7foxd3200) foxes do not belong in nature in Australia! !! they totally distroy our native wildlife as well as our farm animals! !! tne kill thousands of sheep chickens and at times even calves ect !!!! and in victoria at the moment there is even a bounty on the head of $10 each all most be killed on sight !!!! and as mentioned 100s get shot ect each year !!!! my uncle can go out and shoot 30 foxes in a single weekend !!! so they as well as pigs are a big big problem in our country at the moment !!!! and i belive shooting them is much more humane than poison with 10/80 !!!!!

atleast george doesn't shoot them badly. one shot and it's over. I am not a fan of hunting. Sports hunting i am against for sure. But if it's because of a pest or in some country's really for survival. Then i don't see why no. I mean cats catch mice.

Seriously i don't get why someone would kill a fox or any animal for there fur! I mean a rabbit or hare you can eat but a fox… you can only wear… is that really worth destroying a perfectly good life? Anyways if your killing please let it have a reasonable purpose not just for sports that's just wrong. In the sense that you are a sadist since you enjoy killing just for the heck of it. (And yes being a sadist is not a positive thing)
@therangan3
@therangan3 10 жыл бұрын
Sean Wilks Hell no! Of course killing those billions of other animals just because you can eat them isn't a reasonable purpose either. What i mean is that those killings still have a purpose greater then enjoyment (not saying it's a good purpose but still a better one). It even says in the description of the video ''taking out some decent foxes for good measure.'' for good measure? So just for the heck of it? That's just wrong… PS: I totally agree with you on the salad thing :)
