Wild boar are rampaging across northern Scotland, ripping up turf, destroying nests and eggs, even killing lambs. We’re out at night trying to outwit the new monsters of Loch Ness with Browning shooter Elliot Roberts, guided by Grant Clark and Bobby Sanderson of Highland Deer Management.

Why shoot wild boar?
Wild boar were once native to Great Britain but became extinct more than 300 years ago. Following escapes or deliberate releases from wild boar farms from the 1980s, they have now established breeding populations in the wild including Kent and East Sussex in the South-East of England, Dorset, Devon and the Forest of Dean in the South-West, and parts of Scotland. DEFRA estimates the current population at around 500 in the established colonies. Local wildlife managers estimate it at nearer 5,000.
Wild boar are omnivorous and approximately 400 species of plants and animals have been reported to be part of their diet. Their habit of rooting through the floor of woodland and pasture leaves a clear indicator of their presence. They will take both eggs and nestlings of ground-nesting birds and can damage crops, gamebird release pens and game feeders. Damage to agriculture can also be extensive and concerns have been raised regarding collisions with traffic. Boar have no natural predators in the UK meaning culls are necessary to control population growth.
Wild boar are susceptible to the same diseases as domestic pigs and therefore have the potential to spread infectious disease such as swine fever, foot & mouth and Aujesky’s disease (Gow, 2002; Natural England, 2007).

Was in a river near there doing a freshwater pearl mussel survey when a sounder of boar appeared on the bank. They stopped and looked at me really confused about this daft human was doing up to his waist in the river😂. I was in need of new waders after that.

Are wild boars invasive ? How did they enter Scotland?

They lived here before but we're hunted to extinction around 300 years ago. The modern ones are mostly pigs that escaped farms and have gone feral as well as a smaller number of actual wild boar that escaped captivity.

Pigs will plough big areas overnight, not good for habitat.

I beg to differ on that one? We just need to keep them in check? They are really good for habitat, after all they are native of the UK.

@@pluffer96 I helped a mate who rehomed pot bellied for years (I grew up on a farm and was the only person he could find who wasn't scared) and one rescue made his garden look like the Somme overnight also destroyed a panel door. We only kept them in concrete sties so never had that problem. From what I've seen they are more effective than a rotorvator on unbroken ground.

I guess 150kg is decent, but you guys should come to Texas, if you want to hunt the real monsters.

these are wildboar. Boar in Texas are ferals.
@fleetcenturion
@fleetcenturion Жыл бұрын
@@frechwieoskar8052 - Wrong. The wild boar in Texas are descendants of boar brought over from Europe, not simply feral pigs, though they have occasionally interbred with them. This hardly matters, however, because it only takes a few generations living in the wild, for the descendants of domestic pigs to become unrecognizable from their primeval cousins.

@@frechwieoskar8052 - [sigh] First, that's what "wild" means. Second, wrong. The boar in Texas were originally imported as game animals. Now they run rampant. Third, _any_ breed of domestic pig will revert to a primitive state, along with appearance, when left in the wild, after only a few generations.
