Billy was in the same Age Bracket as the Brecker’s - and was with the Band Dreams for two Columbia Lps around 1970. Band featured Will Lee/ DonGrolnick / Randy @Mike Brecker, John Abercrombie/Jeff Kent/ DonLubahn I was in that Business then and Billy lived in or near Mill Valley Ca he had a deal with CBS so I was able to talk to him in our Bookstore in the center of Town Really Great Guy Definitely Full Back Material! He was a true Leader in the Era of few Jazz / Rock / Fusion’s youth. Same with George Duke SF guy and we had just signed him at Epic I was the Only Person Left in the Resturaunt at the Myako Hotel where we were both staying. He walked over to my table and sat and had dinner with me. Again an amazing conversation he was so excited to get the CBS Deal and wanted to know what we had planned to propel his future. ? was always my answer I looked at him and told him he already had built a tremendous opportunity all he had to do was Work his Ass Off like our Office had to do every day. The pressure was so intense from Mgt of all Artists it was often miserable. The Artists were the true Geniuses that saved our jobs,

The roll that starts at 04:40 is the most agressive, raw, emotional piece of drumming I've ever seen and heard in my life. It moved me so much. Only a drummer who has been through a lot in life would play like that in the moment. To combine those three elements with amazing technique is the hallmark of master musicianship. To scare us even more, he did it in time..Billy's the Real Deal!

Billy's breadth in terms of retinue of work across multiple genres renders him perhaps the greatest living exponent of acoustic drums. I have heard BC play with incredible control and subtlety only to be blown away by his power and precision! I think Buddy Rich's antipathy for BC stemmed from the incredible range and versatility of BC, who had proved himself as a Jazz/bebop stalwart and was breaking new frontiers with open handed drumming, fusion and much else...I think Buddy was brilliant in his genre but he was a throwback, BC was a trailblazer! And for those who think drumming begins and ends with Neil fucking Peart, get a sense of perspective and watch Peart trying to do Buddy Rich big band...Car crash you tube!
@CryptoKevin6 жыл бұрын
Do work Modern Drummer or something?
@dreamopeth6 жыл бұрын
I think Neil didn't do a bad job. Trying to replicate Mr Rich takes time and devotion and sends you on a journey away from your true playing self. I've tried it but I find it's nice to take licks from players rather than try and be them. It's got to come from the heart and BC would agree.
@magiscichoam4 жыл бұрын
Ross Williamson I absolutely agree. I first saw Billy Cobham live with “The Mahavishnu Orchestra” at Cobo Hall in Detroit in April, 1972. They were a last minute replacement, opening act for “Emerson Lake and Palmer” (ELP). I’d never heard of “The Mahavishnu Orchestra” or Billy Cobham. As a budding rock drummer (I’d been playing for about 5 years), I came to see Carl Palmer. Watching Cobham perform was an astonishing and revelatory experience. He changed my entire perspective on drumming. As good as Carl Palmer was that night he absolutely paled in comparison to Cobham. Later in an newspaper interview with the Detroit Free Press, Palmer would describe Cobham as playing “science fiction drumming and he’d never seen anything like it”. Before Cobham I’d seen a host of great bands with standout drummers including “Cream” (with Ginger Baker), ”The Who” (with Keith Moon), ”The Jimi Hendrix Experience“ (with Mitch Mitchell), “King Crimson” (with Michael Giles), “Yes” (with Bill Bruford) and Tony Williams Lifetime (with Tony Williams) to name a few. As great as those performances were, Cobham’s drumming was a quantum leap and a whole new order of magnitude in terms of elegance, fluidity, musicality, speed, technique and sheer power. I also saw Cobham deliver another otherworldly drumming performance with ”John McLaughlin” and “Carlos Santana” during their “Love, Devotion and Surrender” tour “at the Crisler Arena (at the University Of Michigan) in Ann Arbor MI in August 1973. Regarding Neil Peart (I’ve seen “Rush” perform live several times), he’s a solid rock drummer for Rush style music, period. But that’s it. In my opinion (I read and write drum notation) Peart primarily uses single stroke rolls, utilizing creative sticking patterns and alternating time signatures. To me his drumming is stiff and methodical. Also, it lacks fluidity, musicality and versatility. But Peart’s extremely popular and influential. He sells a lot of DW drums and is the recipient of numerous accolades and awards from advertiser driven, magazine sponsored readers polls. With all of the truly outstanding drummers that are performing today and have performed over the years, it’s laughable to take seriously those fans/readers that consider him to be the best or greatest drummer ever. Any comparison to Billy Cobham is simply utter nonsense.
@Stormbringer754 жыл бұрын
magiscichoam It’s great to hear a very experienced and objective discourse on drumming compared to where Billy Cobham takes it. For me spectrum was seminal, someone once commented that ‘billy had a brain 🧠 for each limb’ and as long as that includes his incredible musical central brain I am cool with that description. Peart when discussing the process behind the drummers readying themselves for the ‘burning for buddy’ album said that whilst he and all the other drummers were meticulously practicing and arranging with buddy’s orchestra...Billy came in and offered to play any buddy standard by sight reading. He may not be as fast and as much of a showman as buddy but he is a much more durable and multi dimensional drummer in comparison. Spectrum awakened something in me in its incredible syncopation, improvisational genius and ethereal energy. For me drumming isn’t a competitive sport where someone ends up a world champion. Drumming is part of a collaborative art form in which the rhythm section creates a platform from which the rest of the band can thrive. Cobham has elevated himself to a inspirational soloist who plays sympathetically to the band as long as the band has the talent to complement his brilliance. (Hence the incredible collaborations of Cobham)
