This is a very good tutorial, clear teaching. Thank you! I'd love to have you continue it and teach his songs with his style strokes. There are many stroke tutorials but haven't found any simple tutorials as to what to do with them now! You are the first one who has pointed out the 8 beats and clarified that.

Hello, and thanks for commenting! I don't really actually know any Formby songs, but I might poke around with one or two and see about doing a lesson. The triple stroke would be a necessary element, so maybe I'll do a vid on that first??? Anyhow thanks for watching!

There are a number of split stroke tutorials on youtube and many from Formby fans and experts but none of them really explain it like you have, this is a must see video and a really great way to learn the intricate style, thank you!!!

What a great video, great explanation especially strumming higher up the fret board rather over the hole plus a simple break down of the exercise, now i have cracked it thanks.

This is great, the thing most people don't explain is the 123 123 12 which makes up half the iconic sound, thank you ☺️

What a helpful video John. I have looked at every other one I could find on the topic but yours clearified what I was missing. As somebody mentioned earlier, the 123 123 12. That is what I was missing. As a drummer I should have caught that. Thanks very much.

I used to play a stroke like this on guitar and it was called a 'Rhumba Stroke' or a 'Rhumba Scratch' with this same rhythm. You would use your hand in a circular motion by playing 4 fingers, then thumb, then index finger up for the 3 combination. Do this twice and then the last two strokes strum four fingers down and skip the thumb but the final 8th beat was the index finger up. A lot of strokes where the index finger sweeps up the strings was called a 'Scratch'. Both the George Formby Split Stroke and the Rhumba Stroke have a clave rhythm.

My congratulations. This is the best video on split stoke I have found in youtube after many attempts of research. I was looking for a rhythmic explanation since everyone takes it for granted and end up with messy rhythms.

Thanks so much for you video. So well explained with the drawings. I like to see drawings - it is much better than just verbal explanations. Also explaining the fretting of the chords. I'd seen that done on other videos but they did it so fast didn't explain it much and you had to try to catch on by yourself. Thanks again. I'm viewing in Australia.
