I know Gershwin’s music better than I know any other composer’s music. He would have LOVED what she did in the middle with that cadenza! He loved it when Oscar Levant interpreted him, and he would love what Maja did. This is my favorite piece of my life, since I first heard it 61 years ago. I am now 66, and I’m smiling because Gershwin would have loved this performance beginning with that incredible clarinet. George Whiteman would have hired her on the spot to play it for the premiere in Aeolian Hall in 1924. I love Poland and its people, having been there four times in five years, and I would go back just to hear this orchestra and Maja play anything!

The pianist at just 15 years of age plays as if she wrote it herself! The orchestra members like the clarinet, percussionists and violinists were so endearing. If I were to encounter any other of the members on the street I'd feel privileged, specially after around 18 minutes into the video, they all played like soloists improvising! I have always viewed this piece as a showcase of Gershwin's virtuosity. There is a beauty to the underlying theme that haunts in the backgtound but doesn't come to fruition because the piece dives into a plethora of highs and lows that tenuously hold together through a cacophony of miniature showpieces frenetic in exuberance and yet disconcerted in execution as if the composer had been dabbling with drugs. The piece is always chasing its own arse but never finds it. This rendition is exquisitely played by some of the finest musicians, in particular the lead clarinetist, but the twinkling star, just fifteen, is a prodigy of future worldwide renown.
