George grew up in a Catholic family but wasn't particularly religious, he had a religious awakening in 1966 through Indian spirituality, figures like Paramahansa Yogananda and Swami Vivekananda influenced him as did his friendship with Ravi Shankar. Vivekananada taught that all religions are all just different pathways to God and that is what George is showing by switching between Hallelujah and Hare Krishna these are just different ways of expressing devotion to God.

Quoted from 'The Beatles Bible' : 'Hidden among the backing vocals towards the end of the song was the entire text of Vedic Sanskrit prayer. Gururbrahmaa Guru visnuh, Gururdevo Mahesvarah Gurussaakshaat Param Brahma Tasmai Shri Gurave Namhah The prayer translates as: “The teacher is Brahma, the teacher is Visnu, the teacher is the Lord Mahesvarah. Verily the teacher is the supreme Brahman, to that respected teacher I bow down.” Harrison would have delighted in masquerading such an elaborate message of devotion amid the otherwise simple incantations.'

you picked up the messages he was trying to convey and yes those chants were indian Hindu but first started out as western chrtistian hallelujuas. One of his messages was that longing to find God or a higher power is universal. it is a hypnotic tune for sure, one my favorites.

"One of his messages..."? I agree, spot on! "Hallelujah", "Hare Krishna"...all expressed through the universal language of music. It's a shame so many use religion to divide us; George is strongly suggesting we are more alike than we are different. Strange thing: I've heard this song hundreds of times, and I never, ever though to call it "hypnotic," but I did think that exact word during this video. In 1967 The Beatles, their wives, and a few friends, including Mick Jagger, went to India for a month looking for enlightenment, vacation, and rest, without fans all over them for a little while. George was fascinated, more than the others, by Indian philosophy, religion, and music. He helped introduce sitar master Ravi Shankar and Indian classical music to a western audience, used Indian instruments on Beatles songs, and studied everything he could. Harrison said that the Hindi words of this song were just another way of saying “Hallelujah”, was talked into releasing this song, and was a little uncomfortable about it because it was a private prayer of his. Then it went to #1!

Did you notice how long it took before the drums kicked in? I remember hearing this song on the radio on the way home from church back when I was a little kid. That slide guitar really stood out and so did the hallelujah chorus. A decade or so later I played guitar in the youth choir at church and my buddy in the choir and me tried to slip this song into the program but the choir director caught it and told us no. The hare-krishna bits were a step too far for him I suppose. We played an instrumental bit from Pink Floyd instead without telling him and he never knew the difference. Harrison was taken to court over "My Sweet Lord" on the accusation that he plagiarized "He's So Fine" by the Chiffons for this song. He lost the case because the similarities between the songs are clear, but the ruling was that the plagiarism was subconscious so he retained his reputation, legally, but the man was a saint so it hardly mattered in the end. I blame that whole mess on Phil Spector anyway. Check out The Chiffons "He's So Fine" for comparison.

Mahesvara, Gurur Vishnu etc. are directly from "Guru Brahma Mantra". In Buddhism Mahesvara also means The Great Lord. "Guru is Brahma, who is the Lord of Creation, also called as Generator, Guru Vishnu means Guru is Vishnu (Vishnu is the Lord who is called organizer), Guru Devo Maheshwarah means Guru is the Maheshwara (Shiva or the destroyer), Guru Sakshat Parabrahma means Parbrahma viz. the supreme god or almighty." Blind Faith song "Presence Of The Lord" is on the same waters. Inspired by the everyday life, it has got spiritual meanings later on.
