George Hotz: Fully Self-Driving Cars Are a 'Scam' and Silicon Valley 'Needs To Die'

The hacking wunderkind thinks Big Tech's approach won't work. He built a $999 autonomous driving system that runs on a smartphone.

It seems like self-driving cars have been five years away for at least 15 years. But now, major players in the industry-like Google spinoff Waymo, GM self-driving unit Cruise, and upstart Zoox-are promising that fleets of fully autonomous taxis are just about to roll out.
"It's a scam," says George Hotz, the 30-year-old hacker-slash-entrepreneur best known as the first person to jailbreak the original iPhone when he was 17. "No one's close."
Hotz points out that every system on the road today requires the driver to pay attention at all times and be ready to take over. He says that companies touting fully self-driving cars without human safety monitors-and sometimes without steering wheels or pedals-are offering nothing more than a "press demo."
Hotz started Comma.ai in 2015 to upend what he views as Big Tech's wasteful and shortsighted approach to self-driving vehicles. Instead of building specialized cars that rely on expensive sensors and follow laser-mapped routes, Comma.ai has created an autonomous driving system that runs on a smartphone, works on most vehicles sold in America, and requires no additional hardware.
The company's first truly all-in-one device, the $999 Comma 2, packs a modified smartphone and other hardware into one slim plastic casing, which Hotz 3D-prints in the garage of Comma.ai's office in San Diego. Mount it to your windshield, plug it into your car's OBD-II port, and Comma's OpenPilot software can take the wheel. The Comma 2 uses the phone's cameras and taps into the built-in RADAR and drive-by-wire systems contained in cars built after 2012, automatically turning the steering wheel and operating the gas and brakes.
Hotz says his company has spent $8.1 million thus far and is profitable, while the big players in the self-driving space have spent billions without offering an economically viable product. While his competitors vie to dominate the market with proprietary technology and ridesharing platforms, Hotz is focused on building an open-source, decentralized ecosystem for driverless technology.
When I first spoke with Hotz in the summer of 2017, he predicted that by 2020, cars would take their own wheels for large stretches without humans paying attention and that by 2022 they would achieve full self-driving ability in limited areas.
"None of that's true," he says now. "Profitable robo-taxis are still a decade away."
Hotz thinks the automated vehicle industry has surrendered to what he views as the vices of modern Silicon Valley, focusing on growth and hype rather than delivering truly innovative products. To find out why he's soured on the space and to take the Comma 2 for a test drive, I caught up with Hotz at the Airbnb Comma.ai rented off the Las Vegas Strip during CES, the largest consumer electronics show in the world.

Its never about the software, it’s about the data. Always. We sell a heat pump simulation with transient behavior. No the product is you have a fleet of heat pumps, monitor their behavior and write a script that generates similar looking curves. This is obvious when talking about AI. But also in normal model based approaches you need data for validation.

I love how refreshingly honest he is about his own product. No vague statements to appease legal or save fsce to the consumer. The interviewer asks, paraphrased "you seem to have moved goalposts from self driving to advanced driver assistance" and he responds with "oh yeah, that was too ambitious. We've mellowed out." What you are talking about is the driving equivalent of a train or escalator. Current road driving is hugely complex. And given the near impossibility of removing all bugs from any software, it is basically guaranteed that something which looks like a car that drives on current roads with an automated pilot will cause accidents. The infrastructure costs to make roads act like railroads is highly prohibitive.. which is why I don't think we'll see anything like what you are describing ever. It violates both technical precepts AND economic principles. It is neither technically feasible nor economically affordable. Worse.. as one of the segments above touches on.. you do NOT want to give people a sense of false security. From my perspective, they shouldn't even be adding systems like this to autos. The morons that trust too much will end up getting themselves into trouble (which we have evidence of right now). Things that can go 50 miles per hour and kill people must be designed for the lowest common denominator. They must ASSUME distraction is part of the equation. Right now we have folks driving distracted without automatic systems and killing folks on the road. The system must be designed assuming THOSE drivers are behind the wheel.

FYI, this video seems to imply that this Comma product will work with almost any car made after 2012. In reality, it only works with a small handful of specific models (mostly Honda and Toyota) made after 2016 or later.

I remember watching a show where someone hacked the driverless grid and held a city hostage during rush hour. Everyone was stuck in their cars, driving around, waiting for the city to pay before the deadline where they were all going to be crashed. Things like that concern me. This is plugged into your OBD port, if your system gets hacked you can yank the thing out and take over, you're not stuck with an integrated system you can't access that ignores your input and can become a real danger to you and everyone around you.

My city's metro system has driverless trains. There is a technician in the train to comply with the laws. The on and off switch for the trains are closed circuit due to cyber security concerns, so it requires a human to switch it on. There hasn't been a single incident where the technician had to take over the control, or so we have been told.

I work in industrial robotics and automation. Engineers are very arrogant. They will claim that they have a sensor for this situation, an algorithm for that situation - ALL ROBOTICS PROGRAMMING IS PRESUMPTIVE. In a factory, a robot is kept in literally a cage for several reasons. One reason is to keep people away from the robot. Another reason is to give the robot boundaries, if it hits the barrier it will overload the motors and hopefully shut the robot down - BUT most import is that the boundary around the robot is kept EXTREMELY PREDICTABLE. that is to prevent random events, people wandering in to the boundary+ area, supplies and materials falling in etc. ROBOTS CAN NOT BE PROGRAMMED FOR every possible random eventuality. A self driving car is nothing but a robot! And the average street and intersection is an INFINITELY varying environment WITH PEOPLE IN IT! The promotion of self driving cars and delivery trucks will result in dangers and death for people. If there is an emerging self driving vehicle industry it will be limited to poor areas where people have no political clout.

In Canada, the rules aren't the issue. Winter is. How can a car see the difference between patch of wet road vs black ice 50 yards ahead when there's a break in the coverage of snow on a highway? The distributed web isn’t yet ready to do everything the regular web can do, but, a whole lot of very smart people are working towards it and making real progress. I would not be at all surprised if 5-10 years from now, the coolest things on the internet can only be accessed via distributed web browsers, where everyone participates in making it work, and basically no centralised servers or “clouds” are involved. For many applications, it’s already possible to do, though hard. The tooling and developer experience is improving rapidly. For some applications, it’s still almost impossible, but if we can get trustless computing stuff working, we’ll be able to fully decentralise “cloud” type processing and remove the need for trusted providers like amazon and google, and quite possibly remove the need to raise money through ads to fund server infrastructure

@@HiddenKenshin Typically it's a company or individual lobbying government for laws that preclude competition. For example, a group of professionals (doctors, lawyers, or barbers) push for laws that require you to obtain services from only 'certified', 'licensed', or 'union' organizations. It has nothing to do with 'rent', only adding a hidden tax on services by making it difficult to allow new competition into the fold.

@@HiddenKenshin William's answer is mostly true, but that's not the full concept. Rent-seeking is attempting to gain any benefit from society without contributing some production. The 'rent' is refers to payment by society (or economic system) to the entity without the entity contributing any additional value in trade. The examples he gave are the most egregious (bad), but it covers a much wider range of behaviour; like voting for welfare or applying for a government grant. @@jaimefish173 Extrapolation is the difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge can be given to any computer, but wisdom is a trait of true sentience. A fully autonomous car won't come until we make a computer sentient, and then we'll have to reckon with the car wanting things we don't.

@@Mishkola I disagree. A fully autonomous car just needs to prove that it is much better _statistically_ than a human under the conditions in which it operates. Emergency response vehicles for natural disasters, for instance, may take hundreds of years to automate, but driving a truck down the interstate or a cab in a metropolitan area are absolutely problems which can be solved in the foreseeable future.

They were testing other areas of the AI. The car saw the woman over 6 seconds before impact and was not supposed to stop. One thing people who say this will never work seem to not notice. The 'safety' drivers have a very difficult time paying attention because nothing bad ever happens.

@@rebchizelbeak5392Apples to Oranges comparison. The difference between Theranos and Open Pilot is that you can see it working. You can buy the dev kit and try it out. There is a growing community around a product that improves the quality of life for people who regularly drive long hours. You may say George is a bit sensational and I'll agree but he is definitely not a snake oile salesman. If you are bit more objective, you'll see the good in this project. Of course, open pilot may not solve self driving but it just needs to be so good at Level 2 that it reduces driving stress and fatigue.

There is a huge difference between autonomous drive and an assist feature, such as comma product. We are seeing auto-pilot as a main feature of mobility but this will only work if 100% of the fleet are autonomous.

The only way to self drive effectively is to physically attach cars to a physical rail that has traffic management capabilities or reliable sensor built into the roads. Then combine that with the current detection systems they are using. The best approach would be to first dump money into the roadways to retrofit them with the required tech to support the cars.
