Pretty sure image recognition in Google is a little more advanced now, based on pixels. There are a tonne of useful (and very dull) patents that Google has filed that show all kinds of thinking on their end.

"I'm gonna show everyone how alive we are, Im gonna change the game!" Then Zucc proceeds to waste billions of company dollars on an embarrasing joke of a "metaverse" and halve his company's stock price. No, I don't care that he was trying to innovate. You don't get points for making obviously stupid moves just because it's a new move. This Silicon Valley mindset of "innovation" being an ends in itself, and not a means to solve problems is so juvenile and anti-engineering.

@@nicolasdhulst1451listening to it again, it's hard to tell, but I think you're right, that is what he said. Holy crap, that's FAR stupider though. The idea that the most "alive" thing, the most noteworthy and disruptive thing Zucc did was to change the NAME of the company. Not actually innovate, not make anything new, not solve a problem, but just change the name and try to break into an industry where his company had no experience or talent. Brilliant gambit. Zucc slammed his dick in a car door and Hotz was on the sidelines cheering him on.

This guy is so confidently spouting off opinions that aren't thought out and you can tell how frustrated Lex is. Zuckerberg is going to win because he is so alive? The android man? Google has invested more in AI and robotics and has more hardware and the best researchers in the world. Bard has already massively improved since they released it and it's in their interest to self-improve. They own deepmind, Boston dynamics, and are heavily invested in anthropic. I can't understand how this guy can so confidently just dismiss the biggest leader in AI because Zuckerberg can turn off Facebook and Instagram (he can't either).

I think he thought this through, I believe he is referring to Google's ability to pivot. In a way you can liken it to microsoft during Bill gate's era, they knew all the technologies that would succeed but they where bogged down by bureaucracy to make the necessary adjustment to make their products work. For example , microsoft had the touch screen years before apple even attempted to do something similar, yet even now Microsoft has not had any lasting success in the mobile industry despites its tremendous wealth, talent and research.

Matthew 22 KJV 1-14 1 And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said, 2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, 3 And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. 4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. 5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: 6 And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. 7 But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. 8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. 9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. 10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests. 11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: 12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. 13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

Yes, he really doesn't know whether Google will take over, Zuckerberg can't shutdown Facebook either. He would be sued for losing millions. Google was ahead of Zuckerberg before with AI being open source by driving tensorflow. That is kind of dead. Also, how do we know that AI would be centralized via one company and not be decentralized like Bitcoin?

I see in the comments most people think this guy is wacky but I think he's right. Many trashed Mark Zuckerberg's metaverse vision but that's only cuz the media doesn't know what the hell they're talking about. It's not about the visual part, it's about the tools Meta is developing to allow remote interactions, gesturing and visuals so it feels like the person's in the same room. Meta is developing the picks and shovels for remote human interaction that will be the standard and the next generation beyond the little square, flat boxes in our pockets right now. If you've seen the show The Peripheral, that is the kind of interaction everyone will be doing in the future and Meta will own it. It will be worth trillions.

it's the idea that there's a person who thinks about the big picture and has the full authority to pivot and make changes, this is the case with Zuck who has majority voting rights. On the other hand Google is a bureaucracy machine that prints money and it's been mostly on autopilot for the past 10+ years. Everyone there even the CEO is just an employee, without enough skin in the game to shift things when needed. In a way Google is dead, because the moment what they currently do stops working it will be impossible to change direction fast enough, think of Nokia and their mobile dominance.
