My proposed solution to an AGI utility function in order to ensure its values are aligned with ours so we survive the intelligence explosion - The 3 laws of AGI: 1. Minimise harm/permanent trauma; 2. Subject to 1, maximise consciousness/free will (i.e. the ability for conscious entity to freely choose and take action to accomplish its complex goals including the experience of more complex and/or ecstatic conscious states); and 3. Subject to 1, maximise intelligence (i.e. ability to determine the action required to achieve a complex goal). Of course - definitions will be the tricky one (particularly how to define harm/trauma). There is a risk this will evolve as subjective values evolve. But ideally should be objectively measurable as possible (eg most people can agree being healthy is better than being diseased and is possible to objectively measure the absence of disease). Would be interested if anyone can break these (like Asimov’s laws of robotics which were just a writing prompt not to be taken seriously). We really really need to be working on getting this right before the first AGI gets the ability to improve its general intelligence. Or we are all fucked (unless we can successfully contain it or ensure controlled intelligence explosion, which might be impossible given multiple competing state actors with an incentive to gain the first mover advantage).

Almost all Lex's tech guests are fixated on knowledge being good but often overlook the subtle manipulation of knowledge present in media throughout history and even in science that biases "truth". Dear friends, we see glaring examples from holy scriptures to social media --- Truth is typically a twisted concept that ultimately leads primates like us to violent conflict. Yann, Mark, Elon should listen to Geoff and consider how screwed up Truth has become. I'm increasingly dubious that AI will be able to help us find a peaceful path forward if the tech community doesn't become much more vigilant.

Listening to this again in April 2023 just shows how clear thinking and rational Max is/was on the subject of AI. I love how he describes some tech company creating AGI as a bunch of dudes in charge of deciding the values etc. OpenAI is literally run by 30 year old kids deciding the future of AI and the future of humanity. Rereading his book again now... Life 3.0. Also great to see Lex stumble through some of his questions and see how far he has come as an interviewer.

"Love" @ 1:08:24. I searched the page for instances of "love". 19 instances. Most are expressed as "love" towards a person (Max, Lex) or an object (AI, Lex's podcast). A difficult problem associated with an AGI agent "loving" an entity is the language. English is notably poor in its categorization of love. Koine Greek is more expressive - eros, filia, storge, agape. There is a chaos and mystery in each categorization. I'm not certain that machines can learn how to love in all four koine Greek senses.

I might be wrong, but I can see Lex is much more excited when he started this podcast or more expressive. Maybe 2020 is tiring for everyone. I hope 2021 will treat us great! One thing that didn’t change: his genuine curiosity about life, love, intelligence, science, and humanity. His unique personality contributed to the success of his podcast. No one can copy that. And if people say that podcast is about the guests, well, not really, it’s about the host also, the interactions could extract a different perspective from both. If I want to get deeper into a topic presented by an expert, I will read his or her publications, books, or essays. I think podcast is about sharing and exploring interesting novel ideas that are not mainstream or popular, which I really appreciate. Sometimes the guests are perplexed by Lex’s unusual questions, but that’s also interesting and entertaining. Some parts of the conversation are repeated in the second interview, it’s interesting to see that they are still thinking about it and hold the same conclusions. Stay awesome, Lex! I love you 3000!

I love the dialogue about consciousness in AI. It's an important question because consciousness gives motivation. That changes the game if your AI can be motivated not artificially, by algorithms or programatically, but through a dynamic set of circumstances that will ultimately be up to the AI to determine.

I totally agree with Dr. Max Tegmark regarding sympathetic goals and ai. I think this could greatly assist lawmakers working on 5000 page bills. His humility regarding intelligence is well received. And both of your concerns about ai empathy being of utmost importance for the future is in concurrence with my own. The example of the autopilot and airplanes was spot on. Some of this could be applied to testing the logic of the constitution against non-egailtarian application of civil liberties and justice. It could also be used very effectively to prevent an accidental creation of legislation that contradicts our initially agreed upon weighted goals. I agree with Dr. Seth Lloyd's view of the cosmos being a computational device fundamentally. And the problem of being able to interface and communicate with it addressed by Dr. Tegmark.

I’m a Neurologist and I’d like to answer question you asked: Can consciousness exist without a body? Yes. But the reason consciousness makes more sense in a “body” is because our concept of what consciousness is (or isn’t) depends on all the sensory inputs that come from the body. A brain by itself is a pretty generic thing. So once you take the combination of not just someone’s life experiences but also the way that their body has reacted to those life experiences that we create the brain’s connectome. And because of Neuroplasticity, if you take someone’s brain into another person’s body, that body will eventually start to transform the brain into the other person.

@11:42 As someone who is dyslexic I would describe the act of reading as a very conscious activity, looking for patterns in the words and matching them to known sounds. I go through lots of little rules like its a "d" if its at the foot of the "bed" or a "b" if its at the head. This got me thinking, is this just me? or would other dyslexic people describe reading as a conscious activity versus an unconscious one. If so what would that mean? I guess as we get closer to solving AGI these sorts of observations about our own intelligence will get illuminated.

I would like to come with suggestion about 15:55, "How to know if someone is loving you & how to tell if something is conscious". I do not believe that the act of saying "I love you" or claiming "I am concussion" is an indication of anything. People say stuff all the time (ton of people utter "I love you" without meaning it at all), since it is in their interest to say it, not necessarily because it represents how they truly feel about the world (Can be different things than love or consciousness), therefore observing how people act generally (or showing "love" by behavior in this example) is a much better indicator of the underlying emotion. I also believe that we can do the same to AI or computer based intelligence in the future, what questions will they ask? What meaningless stuff will they do when believing no one are observing?

Thanks Lex Fridman, Some really good information and questions that deserve more attention. The Touring text for intelligence is not good enough, we really do need to know if AI/ AGI is conscious and to what extent. However, the first most important thing for me is this question: Is it the right thing to create Living conscious aware machines to begin with? Obviously for you R&Ds out there, this question is answered as a yes, But.. We aren't there and now our goal is machines that are most helpful. But, is it our responsibility to go that far? I want to check out that book.

I guess it is just me. I would MUCH rather hear a low level buzz than the gating, chopping of the beginning and end of words , and total lack of room tone between words that the audio plug in did to this. The human brain is very well adapted to almost effortlessly extracting signal in noise but this is so foreign to our adaptation that it is like fingernails on a blackboard to me. Just imagine, hypothetically. -Lets say AGI, or any kind of (multi-Layered/integrated algorithmic systems) market competition leads to larger investments in companies building the smartest systems, in the future these systems get so complex they harvest up all elemental/molecular resources that the planet holds. -Building vastly more complex systems that are in direct contact with similar systems as competitors for matter and energy, selection pressures emerge only allowing certain arrangements of intelligent matter to exist because of this "new super life forms" pressure on the solar systems local environment. -Maybe 5 billion years in the future, the milky way might be a completely different environment with entropy increasing because these new Hyper Life Forms are constantly consuming. If you examine the way brain neural nets do things, seeking connection, filtering stimulus through algorithms, reward/punish each perceptual/sensory algorithms after finishing a task, and in feedback loops with other regions to adjust the way the stimulus is processed in conjunction with a goal. This is the direction we are going with our Tech.

New insights for me: a) Even an smallish arbitrary classification task like categorizing 1megapixels, needs more bit than atoms in the universe (as you have to list them), but AI systems and humans can do it for many categories we care about, so your categories are highly compressible. b) Quantum Systems are great and finding minima in high dimensional space (as is used in deep learning), and tunneling allows them to be unstuck from local minima.

Dear Lex - re: the audio - I DO happen to be an audio engineer and I think you did all you could have to limit the intrusiveness of the RF interference. Hard-gating the speaker and boosting the resonant frequency range of the speaker's voice against the background is pretty much all you can do once the RF interference is on tape. Any other signal processing tricks unless they are the highest of the high end state of the art are likely to introduce just as many distracting artefacts as they remove. I think you did a really good job to make it sound natural as possible to the point that if you are not listening for it you don't really notice it (as exemplified by some of the comments below about people not really noticing it). PS: loving all these conversations. Keep it up.
