The first line almost tells the story... "He said I'll love you 'til I die" - and he did. That was the day he stopped loving her. In the chorus "they placed a wreath upon his door, and soon they'll carry him away..." are they confirming lines. He died the day he stopped loving her. Very sad but it does happen sometimes. George Jones was, as Garth Brooks said at the Kennedy Center awards, "simply the greatest voice to ever sing country music".

This song breaks my heart every time. The Old Possum! My grandparents were married nearly 60 years and my grandfather told my grandmother multiple times a day he loved her and told her would til the day he died. In 1995 my grandfather passed away and my grandmother played The Dance by Garth Brooks and this one. He stopped loving her because he passed. I can remember my grandmother sing it and cry. I was 18 and it still gets me.

Just read his book. Then you'll understand why George Jones is the greatest singer. His raw emotion comes through bc he's lived what he sings about. I'm 40 yrs old and fell in love with his music the first time I ever heard it. Even Frank Sinatra, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello and many more call him the greatest
