Me and my good friend Dave Haley jamming in Perth-Australia, this one was the last show of our clinic tour in Australia. Absolutely killer tour, big thanks to everyone who supported us, to Allan's Music + Billy Hyde and especially to Sam Riseborough for organizing one of the best tours ever!!

This just shows how good david haley really is. Kollias showed more diversity but Haley was doing some better groove and planned accents. No body really won... if anything the viewer wins.

Music is - hopefully - not JUST a talent show, but it is that as well. Everyone is different, the best players usually more so than others. But, of course you can and should compare. Comparisons can however be made tactfully and with insight instead of resorting to bitter, immature expressions that come from a base source not to be further discussed in this small space. Of course they're showing off, that's what performances are all about and that's often where the passion comes from! Add my 2c.
@DeathMetalPizza1
@DeathMetalPizza1 12 жыл бұрын
Also, why are people comparing? Honestly? Drumming (and music in general) is NOT a talent show. No 2 drummers ever practice the same thing so one gets better at something the other one isn't working on and vice versa. If no 2 musicians ever spend the same amount of time on something as the next then what is there to compare? No one's showing off, there just practicing and playing because their compassionate about it. That's my 2 cents.

While I do agree that Derek Roddy can survive in any musical environment and do a fantastic job, to say George is just fast with a smaller amount of versatility is kinda unfair. George plays death metal all year every year with Nile so branching out is harder for him to do then Derek Roddy who dosen't play that much death metal any more, hence why Derek can explore other areas of playing.

Hello George, my name is richard, I am French and I am a fan of Nile. This session jamming is brilliant, a perfect precision when you play together. I would like to know how to play the drum as you in the future, you are a god of thedrum for me. Do you think of coming a day in Genève to show us your techniques? That would allow me to meet you and he could speak with you, in spite of my English of low level. Here is I hope to meet you a single day or with Nile. Goodbye.

Yeah I got ya. I mean, I see what you're saying by practicing one paritcular style for so long. If you work on chops for death metal for a whole month, then your ability to play jazz or some other opposite spectrum of death metal surely will be effected. Maybe not tremendously, but it may set you back a bit in another style.
@Dark0men
@Dark0men 12 жыл бұрын
There is SO much shit that Derek Roddy can do infinitely better than Kollias. Roddy is one of the most well-rounded drummers there is. Not only is he a supreme Death Metal drummer, but he is extremely well-versed in almost any other genre of music. The guy can survive in any musical environment. Kollias is just fast.. With a much smaller amount of versatility.
@Dark0men
@Dark0men 12 жыл бұрын
That is all good and everything, but it still remains that Roddy is quite a bit better than Kollias in almost every aspect other than Metal. I've never seen anything that proves otherwise.

Even if George isn't fully confident in this style of music (I think he is), I think he is to be commended for trying to branch out. He works his ass off and I'm fucking impressed that he would go out there and attempt this. I'm only a wanna-be drummer so I if I don't compare this back-to-back with a lifelong funk drummer, it sounds damn good to me. Again, considering that extreme metal drumming is what formed him as a drummer.

@gilswc01 Some drummers (myself included) aren't too into the whole "solo drumming" thing. I'm not saying that is how Dave feels but it might be. Eitherway, his drum performances on the albums he has recorded, as well as his live performances, speak for themselves...hes one of the best there is.

Just to add to your comment, Derek also stated at his clinics that Death Metal was the last form of music he fell in love with. So He has an advantage over a lot of players because he started by playing other forms of music before death metal

While I think his playing on that video is undoubtedly excellent, there is a noticeable lack of the confidence in his playing that he has with extreme metal. Put him in a groove-oriented scenario next to Benny Greb, or a jazz jam alongside Steve Smith, you are going to see that that isn't his major strength. His playing is great in that video, don't get me wrong, but I think that there is a subtle but noticeable difference between the way he plays in that context and a full time groove drummer.

I actually thought Dave Halley had some very, very nice grooves/fills. And his double bass was no joke! George's groove was awesome and totally solid but his fills left me to want a bit more "artsy fartsy".

I did say as much more or less. It's the same way Benny'd never be able to play metal the same way George does, just vice versa. Someone who does something as a main style is inevitably going to have more nuanced and fitting playing for it than another drummer that later adopts it. George did a remarkably good groove vid, but I'm sure it isn't quite the same level as others, even if it's indistinguishable to the guys that are more into rock and metal drumming (Such as myself).

Oh yeah, you're absolutely not wrong. I mean, it'd be like the jazz guys trying to do metal; you could tell it wasn't their main thing, even if they were playing all the same stuff. Still though, as I'm sure you'd agree with, it was an extremely good take on jazz; probably a 95% if the other guys (Benny Greb) are a 100%.
