Such a strange turn of events but George Lazenby didn't disgrace the role despite his inexperience. He performed admirably, there have been certainly worse performances as Bond by people considered as seasoned performers.

The producers made a big mistake when they cast a man with no acting experience in the role. Diana Rigg and Telly Savalas made him look like an idiot with their charisma. They destroyed him. Connery could have stood alongside them, but that was impossible for Lazenby. When it was clear that they couldn't get Connery for the film, they should have hired an actor with star power (Eastwood, Newman, Oliver Reed...). They probably wanted to save money and that's why they hired a nobody.
