I love how nothing is forced or wild sounding! It is as natural for them to groove together as it is for them to breathe. Each instrument has a space in the music and completes the overall mosaic of sound.

My first N.O Records were on Shellac,Bunk Johnson, George Lewis Band, Bix Beiderbecke and others.I must have around 40 thousand tracks of New Orleans Jazz which I started collecting in 1950, formed my own band after listening to this amazing music, I even had a Radio Program in New Zealand for many years, just can't get enough New Orleans jazz, still listening. I must agree with the comments re- the White Dudes,what patronising twits they were,even as late as the 60''s Black musicians in America were not allowed in the front doors of Hotels in New York, now, it appears that they OWN the music.I'm happy to see that many young Whites are playing this amazing style of music these days and they are a reflection of the brilliance of this particular musical style,Great to actually see George Lewis on Screen though, in'our days' there were no such things as Video and Jazz Music was frowned upon for many years. Thanks to all the new musicians who play in this style, at least it is living history. Thank you all.

This was about the last time that this great band played mostly in pure ensemble style instead of the by then standard Dixieland land style of endless solos! And the whole band played rhythm at all times - this is the real deal!! Love it!

Besides being wonderful and full of life it's sophisticated music - ingenious really - very high art developed over time within a fantastic culture. Just amazing. And when we consider the tragic, oppressive nature of the greater American society these folks - the context they achieved this in! Wow. Herculean.

this performance by the Lewis band was video taped in San Francisco and is simply the best filmed performance by that band at it's best - relaxed and still playing mainly ensemble style. The late Phil Elwood, SF music columnist and KPFA programmer, was the MC.

In the fifties we couldn't wait to get hold of recordings from these guys and others until it was driven out by rock and roll. It has always remained my favourite ahead of later popular music.
@stewartfenton76603 жыл бұрын
It was all those musicals you see. And Frankie Laine, and the one they always mention, "How much is that doggie in the window?" If R'n'R hadn't come along the kids would have gone mad. R'n'R was supposed to sweep all that stuff off the map, unfortunately the musicals are still with us.
@IEndeavourAlways3 жыл бұрын
@@stewartfenton7660 Musicals were an entirely different genre. Musicals like ‘Oklahoma, Annie get your gun’ were very popular with older people. Frankie Laine was a genre known as Crooners. They were designed to appeal to the romantically inclined.
@IEndeavourAlways3 жыл бұрын
@@stewartfenton7660 jazz was ‘modern jazz or traditional jazz’ generally fans of one did not mix with the other. ‘How much is that doggy in the window’ was aimed at young children and was never taken seriously. It was about that time that the description ‘teenagers’ was introduced. R&R otherwise known as ‘Pop’ for Popular music was aimed at teenagers. Jazz fans like me hardly listened to Pop until the Beetles and that genre flooded the musical world. It seems that many of us have a special liking for the genre that we went through in our teenager years.
@stewartfenton76603 жыл бұрын
@@IEndeavourAlways very restrained of you not to yell at me, no doubt others eventually will. I've always liked early jazz and regard it as a miracle in fact. The fifties crooners, well I dunno, seems some people still like that kind of thing. But I don't know exactly why I hate musicals so much, they just seem like the antithesis of ANYTHING. Possibly not terribly rational.

I love the Blues and New Orleans Jazz, however, they are different types of music. New Orleans Jazz is based off of the Blues (as is Classic Rock, Funk, etc), although, it is NOT the Blues. Look up the Blues, and you will hear the difference. :)
