The quote didn't come from George directly, so I have no reason to believe it. The quote also came from Pablo Hidalgo, whose opinions I find to be absolutely worthless. It doesn't matter, anyway. If George genuinely liked Kenobi it's still not going to change the fact that it was one of the most amateurishly produced TV shows I have ever seen.

Bad acting, terrible dialogue, horrible pacing, and plot inconsistency. I think I can guess why Lucas may have liked “Kenobi” and “The Last Jedi”. Both productions were heavy on the type stuff is known for saying he included in his films. Ep.8 explored Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey” on multiple levels. Over the course of the film Rey, Poe, Finn, and even Luke all embarked on separate heroic journeys and completed them by film’s end. The climatic battle in “Kenobi” between Kenobi and Vader was a mirror image of the climatic battle they had in Ep.3. Remember, Kenobi told Yoda that he could not bring himself to kill Anakin. Yoda instructed Kenobi to go to Mustafar to destroy Vader. Kenobi went there with the intent to to turn Anakin back to the light, not kill him. But Kenobi encountered Vader, instead of Anakin. In the “Kenobi” series, almost the exact opposite happened. Kenobi went to the planet with the intent to actually kill Vader. But Kenobi encountered Anakin, instead.
@thesharpercoder
@thesharpercoder 4 ай бұрын
“The Hero’s Journey” involves a character that is destined for greatness, but initially rejects the inevitable. All the main characters initially turned away from their destinies. Rey’s journey began in Ep.7 when she rejected the Skywalker lightsaber. Ep.8 began with her continued rejection by handing it to Luke. Rey encountered her sage in Luke. Finn’s journey also began in Ep.7 when he tried to escape from Maz Kanata’s castle. Finn continued his flight from The First Order in Ep.8. Finn encountered his sage in Rose, which was point of the Canto Bight adventure. Poe’s destiny was to become the leader of the Resistance. He initially rejected the opportunity in the opening space battle. Poe was content to continue being a hot shot pilot. Poe encountered his muse in General Holdo. Luke’s journey began with him following in the footsteps of his masters and rejecting using a lightsaber. But Luke was destined “to face down the entire First Order with a laser sword.” Luke encountered his muse in Master Yoda.

There is one tidbit about “The Last Jedi” that I must point out. Many fans heavily criticized Rey using the Force to lift tons and tons of boulders. She didn’t. Rey didn’t exactly use the Force to lift the boulders. She had a major assist from Luke. The film did not do a good job of making this clear, but the novelization does. Rey initially reached out with the Force to move one boulder. But they all suddenly rose into the air, accompanied by the look of astonishment on her face. Rey looks around, totally surprised to see not one but all of them had risen. Luke is still back on Ach-To in deep concentration before the rocks fall to the ground after everyone has safely left the caverns. It was through this connection to Luke that Rey knew Luke had passed the moment he died.

Pablo's hearsay is actually even hearsay of hearsay, because his exact words are "I heard tell this is his favorite..." so this is second-hand information even for Pablo. Then he goes on to qualify that it's because George saw so much of what he'd done in the prequels there, so George didn't even necessarily like the characters, plot and production value, just the fact that Disney is finally embracing the prequel era. When you think back to when Disney first bought Lucasfilm, their line was "We're not going to make George's sequels because everyone hated his prequels and we're not touching them with a 10-foot pole", so I imagine George feels somewhat happy and vindicated to see Disney-Lucasfilm presenting the prequel era in the Kenobi series, now, but through a game of (probably somewhat disingenuous) telephone, that became "It's his favorite thing". Many KZbinrs reporting on this are part of this game of telephone because they are taking the VERY qualified statement that Hidalgo made (he knows he's stretching the truth) and positioning it as fact, either because they are not paying attention and let Hidalgo put one over on them, or intentionally to farm hate-clicks.

Kenobi is underrated, tbh it was fire. I have no trouble believing that 10 years in the desert could do a number on Obi-Wan. The fights were great, just a bit too much shaky cam (a mistake the Ahsoka series rectified). Was there too much focus on the Third Sister? Yeah. But it’s still a great series nonetheless. And this is coming from a TLJ and TROS hater.

In George's defence, I understand why he would be disappointed that the sequel trilogy as it's set a generation later, and had more scope for exploring something new. Kenobi had to be set stylistically between both the OT and PT and had to take place in a very specific and well-known part of the galaxy, so not much wriggle room for visual innovation.

I would not be surprised if MANY people who haven’t watched the prequels in a while think, oh I’d like to see some decent Star Wars for a change, get through TPM and then the awkward stuff in TPM brings back memories of the even MORE awkward stuff in the next two, and then they just curl up in a ball crying, wishing to be back in the 80’s (that’s what I might do 😂)

It wasn't perfect, there were pacing issues in the first few eps especially. I didn't really like Reva so much, and the abrupt turn at the end from anger filled revenge junkie to repentant person felt unearned and rushed. My theory on why Phantom Menace is the most watched- lots of people own the OT on DVD/Blu Ray. I still watch my 2 sided DVD with the original versions on one side, and that version is never going to be on streaming. I hear they've made even more changes to the special editions and I'm not interested. I'm sure fewer people own the prequels in a physical media format. Also we must NEVER forget that in Asohka Anakin didn't just look better, he even VADERED! But jokes aside, TPM is actually the most tolerable of the prequel movies. "Little Annie" and even JarJar are small enough parts of that movie that you can just focus on the shiny (if brainless) Jedi action. AND it was fueled with a certain sense of exuberance an optimism that nicely balanced the simple but effective menace of Darth Maul. It's by far my favorite part of the prequels because at least I don't need to pretend to care about Brat-a-kin Skywalker and his non-existent friendship with Obiwan in that first movie.

So the Phantom Menace being most watched is not that shocking to me, the prequels are the only ones I will watch on that platform.

Sounds like Hidalgo doesn't understand sarcasm. And in reference to The Phantom Menace, it probably has the highest stream count because the OT has die-hard fans watching non-Disney+ versions of the films. I know I watch Empire a few times a year, but I've only watched it on Disney+ once since it came out on the platform. With the prequels and sequels, I always watch on Disney+. Considering that my own account looks like that, even though my genuine viewing history across platforms and home media is the opposite of that appearance, I imagine I'm not a unique case.

Unpopular opinion: i loved the Kenobi series. Yes, the Leia vs bad guys chase scene was cartoonishly bad. Yes, the budget could've been MUCH higher. But, if you would've told me 40 years ago that they're making a Kenobi series that takes place after he isolates himself on Tatooine to babysit Luke, my major question would be, "Why would i want to watch a show about a Jedi that no longer uses the Force, and has denigrated himself to just growing old making sure Luke doesn't get hurt?" This spin is refreshing and somewhat character building. The studio should've done more, but it was still enjoyable.

George just loves his ego stroked. Surrounds himself in yes men sycophants. He's been hiring people to play with his toys not have their own playground.

Hey Thor, I’m not in your discord yet, but maybe I can bring some points I like to make on why I personally liked Kenobi despite its flaws. There are some very interesting aspects to the story that *are* there that nobody talks about, including its important connection to Darth Maul.
