I don't care if he was gay or not. It's irrelevant to his amazing talent. He lived half of his life, a bit more than half, having to hide his true self from everyone, including his family. He hated himself for having to pretend to be someone else. It was totally unfair. He shared his beautuful voice, and unforgettable songs with us, and I'm grateful to him for that. After he died at Christmas in 2016, the whole world found out how giving he was. He was a philanthropist who not only contributed to many charities and organizations, but he also paid for in vitro fertilization for a couple he saw on a talk show. He did all of these things in secret. He told his people to make sure no one knew he was involved. He was a beautiful man, and a beautiful soul. I wouldn't trade this one great gay man for a million so called "good" Christians.

You've gotta remember that when this song was released, there was still a stigma attached to being gay. It was at the height of the AIDS scare and they had no idea where the illness came from or how to treat it. All they knew was that it was fatal and hitting the gay community specifically and that kept celebrities/public figures from coming out. The record labels at the time also discouraged gay artists from being open, especially if the artist was seen as a heart-throb by throngs of teenaged girls who went nuts over them. They weren't about to risk shattering the illusion and seeing their record sales tank. Not sure that's not still the mindset of a lot of labels today...

1988, I was a concierge where GM stayed in Dallas for sold out concert at Texas stadium. He came down and asked questions about Dallas and what I thought would be best places to see and eat. I won’t lie I was kinda shocked he even wanted to venture out of his hotel. Omg he was soooo freaking nice and down to earth normal. We didn’t have cameras and I was bummed but staying professional. He chatted a good 20 minutes with me and an assistant security person. After he gave me a huge hug and a peck on the cheek. I literally thought I’d faint. I got hot and dizzy hahaha. About half an hour later one of his guys sent down this envelope with 4 9th row center tickets to his sold out massive concert. The faith tour. My new husband was working so I had to drag my brother and a friend and wasted the 4th ticket. It is an incredible memory of a super super nice guy.❤

His voice is one of the top voices of generations and all time. Was the lead singer of Wham 1st. One more try is so beautiful and highlights his voice. Another great reaction is, George Michael duet with Elton John at the last show of one of Georgia’s tour. Elton had been out of rehab for a few weeks and George invited him as a surprise guest. They sang one of Elton’s songs from the early 70s called ”Don’t let the sun go down on me”. Vocals unreal. Also father figure and Freedom 1990!!!! The sax intro was played in Skratch Bastid feat. George Michael was once the awkward and slightly nerdy new kid in school. There was a 'cool kid' in the class who befriended him, and encouraged his artistic development. They formed a band together called "Wham!" Then realising just how talented George was the once coolest kid in the class who had taken him under his wing encouraged George to become a serious solo artist. Its a lovely story, so its kind of sad that George's best mate from school is now largely remembered as 'the dumb pretty boy with no talent who held George Michael back in his early years".

George Michael suffered a lot of inner turmoil because of his sexuality. Many people are deeply conflicted because of lack of acceptance. I am a Gen-X kid and I had two friends commit suicide because they could not face being gay before I reached 18. I had other friends who survived to adulthood but were kicked out by their parents before they were 16. I knew people who were homeless as kids and hustled (at the height of the AIDS epidemic) to be able to survive because their families put them out. And yes, these were self-professed Christians who abandoned their children to the streets because they were gay.

Wikipedia-In 1981, Michael was working as a DJ at the Bel Air Restaurant in Northwood, London near Bushey, Hertfordshire. Michael explained in his autobiography, Bare, that he conceptualised "Careless Whisper" based on events from his childhood. Michael wrote, "I was on my way to DJ at the Bel Air when I wrote 'Careless Whisper'. I have always written on buses, trains and in cars. It always happens on journeys... With 'Careless Whisper' I remember exactly where it first came to me, where I came up with the sax line... I remember I was handing the money over to the guy on the bus and I got this line, the sax line... I wrote it totally in my head. I worked on it for about three months in my head." Sheet music for "Careless Whisper" sets the key of D minor. "When I was twelve, thirteen, I used to have to chaperone my sister, who was two years older, to an ice rink at Queensway in London," he explained. "There was a girl there with long blonde hair whose name was Jane. I was a fat boy in glasses and I had a big crush on her-though I didn't stand a chance. My sister used to go and do what she wanted when we got to the skating rink and I would spend the afternoon swooning over this girl Jane." "A few years later, when I was sixteen, I had my first relationship with a girl called Helen," Michael continued. It had just started to cool off a bit when I discovered that the blonde girl from Queensway had moved in just around the corner from my school. She had moved in right next to where I used to stand and wait for my next-door neighbour, who used to give me a lift home from school. And one day I saw her walk down the path next to me and I thought - now where did SHE come from? She didn't know it was me. It was a few years later and I looked a lot different. Then we played a school disco with the Executive and she saw me singing and decided she fancied me. By this time she was that much older and a big buxom thing - and eventually I started seeing her. She invited me in one day when I was waiting for my lift and I was... in heaven. Michael observed that after he stopped wearing glasses, he began getting invited to parties. "And the girl who didn't even see me when I was twelve invited me in," he noted. So I went out with her for a couple of months but I didn't stop seeing Helen. I thought I was being smart - I had gone from being a total loser to being a two-timer. And I remember my sisters used to give me a hard time because they found out and they really liked the first girl. The whole idea of "Careless Whisper" was the first girl finding out about the second - which she never did. But I started another relationship with a girl called Alexis without finishing the one with Jane. It all got a bit complicated. Jane found out about her and got rid of me... The whole time I thought I was being cool, being this two-timer, but there really wasn't that much emotion involved. I did feel guilty about the first girl - and I have seen her since - and the idea of the song was about her. "Careless Whisper" was us dancing, because we danced a lot, and the idea was - we are dancing... but she knows... and it's finished. Andrew Ridgeley came up with the chord sequence on his Fender Telecaster he had received for his 18th birthday. They continued to work together on the music and lyrics both at Michael's house in Radlett, and Shirlie Holliman's aunt's basement flat in Peckham, where Ridgeley was living.

George was considered a musical virtuoso and co-wrote 'Careless Whisper' with his Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley. The pair had written it together while developing as artists in 1981 when they were only 17. He was a huge heart throb, and wasn't outed until 1998. Still, his solo career thrived and was beloved by millions. Rest In Peace, George Michael.

OMG....George Michael! Great songs, misunderstood life, but once again, a great artist gone too soon. He was gay, no doubt among those who knew him, but he began his career in a time when being publically gay could have damaged his growing career. Especially when you consider the AIDS epidemic and wealth of misinformation associated with it in the 80s. His debut solo album "Faith" is essential listening. "I Want Your Sex" shocked many people back then. The extended version of this song from the album is terrific. Not to mention that this album also contained the title track "Faith", "Father Figure", "One More Try" and "Monkey", among others. RIP George Michael

George Michael was around 21yrs old when this song came out. He was still trying to figure himself out. He had girlfriends but was also attracted to men. Initially, he considered himself bisexual but later realized that he preferred men.
@remo276 ай бұрын
But even preferring men doesn't mean he doesn't also like women. The real question is if he somehow graduated from bisexual (but preferring guys) to getting in 'ick' reaction to females and thus being fully gay.
@LunaJo67WDHTMJ6 ай бұрын
Also, the music industry didn't really wnated him to be gay since as a part of Wham he needed to attract a lot of young girls to buy their albums. They should have considered how many young men would buy them, but at that time they didn't think that way. LJ

Also worth noting how much worse the overall social stigmatization and homophobia were when WHAM! was becoming more popular in the early 80s, and then following that when he went solo.
@jackasswhiskyandpintobeans93446 ай бұрын
I doubt that he was really bisexual. He was a pretty guy and women like pretty guys for awhile.

Almost always works out that way, I live in San Francisco and have since the 70's. George was like so many from that time hiding who he was, but deep down always knowing. So sad that George was so worried about his family finding out, it really took him down a dark road. R.I.P. George Michael, we miss you!🕊❤️

Amazing vocalist, excellent writer/lyricist, great producer and composer, plus played piano and guitar. He is my favorite of all time. They just don't make them like that any more. Very few musicians like him. He is sorely missed. You should check out One More Try. His vocals are incredible. Or any of his live performances.

When he wrote this he had befriended a homeless man he actually gave him the right saying he wrote the song even though he himself had wrote the song so that man what's helped out of homelessness he also at one time found a couple who couldn't afford an engagement ring in the overheard them talking and he quietly bought the ring for them just an amazing individual

Not true at all. Andrew Ridgeley is credited as a co-writer but that’s because he did in fact co-write the song

George Michael was a talent. One of the best of his generation. And while he was not "openly gay" in the early part of his career, it was suspected by many. In fact the running joke when he was part of Wham! was that Wham! was an acronym for "we homosexuals are misunderstood!" Gay or no, he was an icon. The album "Faith" is loaded with reaction worthy material, from the title track to "Father Figure" to "One More Try" and more!

Wham UK came first. Then, they just became Wham! Then, George was able to drop his security blanket, Andrew Ridgely, and go solo. This was the Wham! period.
