There are two types of people: people who love Billy Joel's songs, and people who don't know they love Billy Joel's songs

@@thehonestman26 This is what I came here to say. The best lyric in the whole song, and it's completely overshadowed by the video creator's interpretation. Almost as bad is John.. In my mind, he's at least passably good looking; which gives some credence to believing he could be a movie star. This guy makes it looks like they're playing it for laughs. That wasn't Billy's intention.

Nah - @blackpegasusraps knows sound booth, mixing, etc, etc. - "The Longest Time" was *cutting edge* for it's time - it blew our parent's minds - in what, like eighty three? four? - can't remember, but I remember my mother LOVED the harmony in that song and told everyone she met "You know Billy Joel does all the parts on that, right? He's all the voices; they're all him. That's all Billy Joel, and there's no instru ments except a bass. It's all Billy Joel."

There's a legend about how this song was written that just adds to the atmosphere even more. Supposedly, this song is a true story, a compilation of tales about people Joel met while doing a residency at a small piano bar. He was trying to get out of a contract with his label at the time, but they refused to let him go. So he spent the rest of the contract period hidden away in this bar, playing for guests instead of doing tours. When he was finally free, this was the very first song he wrote, a tribute to all the people he'd gotten to know.

When this song came out in 1973, we didn't have internet, youtube, cell phones, etc. We just rode around in our old cars and listened to this on the radio. We had to listen to the words and formulate the movie in our heads. Most artists didn't make music videos until MTV started in 1981.

"Piano Man" was Billy Joel's breakout hit, released back in 1973. He's a brilliant songwriter and the breadth of his subjects and musical styles over the decades is tremendous. One of my favorites is a song about the facades we show to others called, "The Stranger," from his 1977 album of the same name . To clarify, Billy Joel didn't start with "Uptown Girl." That was a song was released in 1983, after he was very established. It was included on an album (An Innocent Man) that basically represented an homage to the music of his youth. "We Didn't Start The Fire" is more recent still (1989) but again, he is looking back on events that took place throughout his lifetime.

I was lucky enough to see him there, in Fenway park in Boston and with Elton John in Hartford CT. I could name 50 songs you should check out but you should start with "Scenes from and Italian Restaurant"

Billy recently released a new song and video to go with it and performed it at this year's Grammy Awards show, and also closed out the night with an abridged playing of You May Be Right. The new song is called Turn the Lights Back On and is the one mentioned at the end of this reaction.

So I was fortunate enough to talk to Billy for a minute and there were a few key things he had mentioned. 1. His favorite song of his own is “Scenes from an Italian restaurant”. 2. One song he always plays that he thought for sure would win an award but never did is “Summer, Highland Falls”. 3. He owes a lot of success to a radio station in Philadelphia called “WMMR”. No radio stations would play his music. WMMR did and he exploded. 4. He ALWAYS ends his concerts with the same statement everytime. He always says “Thank you for coming and remember, don’t take any $hit from anyone!”

Biilly Joel was able to jump around because was writing about things he or friends have experienced in life--and he is a feakin', flaming GENIUS.

Billy Joel is one of the most versatile artists out there. He excels at storytelling and he is not confined to any single genre. Recommendations for Billy Joel songs to show the breadth of his songwriting and musicianship: The Longest Time, The Downeaster Alexa, Christie Lee, Lullaby, The Ballad Of Billy The Kid, The River Of Dreams.

Billy Joel was the first real concert I went to back in 1991 in Houston. 17000 people singing Piano Man and Goodnight Saigon. He was -everywhere- in the 70s-90s. He actually retired from making new music back in the mid 90s and apparently released his first new song a few weeks ago.

He does a residence at Madison Square Garden. Once a month he sells the place out. Billy Joel is indeed a legend. Since you mentions "Sweet Caroline" please do react to Neil Diamond who has 38 top 10 songs and 10 number one's and 10 Grammy's. Sweet Caroline is one of them; Crackling Rosie is another; "I am...I said" is one of my favorites; he wrote most of his songs and a lot of songs for others such as the Monkees "I'm A Believer" and he covered "The Last Thing on My Mind" which is probably my favorite of his covers. I guarantee you'll love his voice and his work is deep and wide and all good.

Billy Joel- "You're Only Human" has a laugh in it that was a mistake during recording, and Billy wanted to have it edited out, but his wife convinced him to leave it in because the song was about being human and we make mistakes.

Billy has been huge for years. At the time of his starting to write uptown girls he was dating super model Elle McPherson. He found himself at a club or party and the 3 people around him chatting were Elle, Whitney Houston and supermodel Christie Brinkley. He was inspired to write Uptown Girls. Before it was finished he his relationship with Elle ended and he started dating Christie, who he later married. He changed the title to Uptown Girl. Great voice. Great writer and musician.
