Brainwashed consumerism, how deeply ironic (or was that purposely done?). Buy from local independent book stores, if you can find them (and you can if you try). Monopoly capitalism has resulted in totalitarian companies like Amazon, Google, Walmart, the Big Banks, FarceBook, etc. It'll be the death of us, literally.

I would consider myself to be a non-conforming Marxist, ( I question everything) so I can see a lot of value in what G. Monbiot is saying here. This is a video that everyone should listen to! I was always at odds with G.M. on what might be the solutions to our current predicament because while he chipped away at the various injustices created by capitalism, he never went as far as questioning the system itself. Now that he has, as he says, 'reluctantly', finally come to the conclusion that the system must go, I'm all ears! This is probably the best short explanation I've heard of how property rights and propaganda have led to the catastrophic situation we find ourselves in now. Yet I sense that George is still a bit hesitant; Using the term 'Soviet communism' is not helpful as communism has never existed. George is correct that what happened in the USSR was anything but progressive, but to label that as 'communism' is to fall into the trap set by the apologists of capitalism. That's exactly what they want you to say, because it's a code for 'there is no alternative to capitalism'. So you may as well throw the baby out with the bathwater. The Irony is that while George is decrying communism and incorrectly citing the Soviet Union as an example, in an attempt to prove that communism doesn't work, he explains very eloquently the destructive nature of capitalism using ideas which come directly from Marx and Engels, the founding fathers of communism. So he has inadvertently shown that the USSR was not communist. If G. Monbiot could rid himself of all of the encumbrances of capitalist propaganda, he could become the foremost spokesperson for a movement to transform human relations.

He did. He openly calls for the end of capitalism, in its current consumerist, neo-liberal form. He also stressed the role of ideology in shaping human mind and behavior. There is no simple solution and clear path away from our predicament. GM made no pretense to hold a crystal ball. But he suggests we start with a critical overview of our core principles (ideologies), and the powerful forces behind them.

This is George’s best talk IMO. I love the way he dissects celebrity culture. He links it to consumerism and describes its material link to capital in a way that’s rarely articulated. The other great thing is - it’s all done in a language anyone can understand. He doesn’t talk in jargon or fancy academic language. He gets down to it and is ruthless in his analysis. Libertarian socialism has worked pretty well in the highly limited trials such as during the Spanish Revolution of 1936. The fact that Western capitalism, fascism and Soviet authoritarian communism would combine resources to crush such a society before it could really get established tells us a thing or two. "I had dropped more or less by chance into the only community of any size in Western Europe where political consciousness and disbelief in capitalism were more normal than their opposites. Up here in Aragon one was among tens of thousands of people, mainly though not entirely of working-class origin, all living at the same level and mingling on terms of equality. In theory it was perfect equality, and even in practice it was not far from it. There is a sense in which it would be true to say that one was experiencing a foretaste of Socialism, by which I mean that the prevailing mental atmosphere was that of Socialism. Many of the normal motives of civilized life - snobbishness, money-grubbing, fear of the boss, etc. - had simply ceased to exist. The ordinary class-division of society had disappeared to an extent that is almost unthinkable in the money - tainted air of England; there was no one there except the peasants and ourselves, and no one owned anyone else as his master." - George Orwell, Homage to Catalonia

"I was impressed by the strength of the C.N.T. It was unnecessary to tell me that it was the largest and most vital of the working-class organisations in Spain. The large industries were clearly, in the main, in the hands of the C.N.T.--railways, road transport, shipping, engineering, textiles, electricity, building, agriculture. At Valencia the U.G.T. had a larger share of control than at Barcelona, but generally speaking the mass of manual workers belonged to the C.N.T. The U.G.T. membership was more of the type of the 'white-collar' worker...I was immensely impressed by the constructive revolutionary work which is being done by the C.N.T. Their achievement of workers' control in industry is an inspiration. One could take the example of the railways or engineering or textiles...There are still some Britishers and Americans who regard the Anarchists of Spain as impossible, undisciplined, uncontrollable. This is poles away from the truth. The Anarchists of Spain, through the C.N.T., are doing one of the biggest constructive jobs ever done by the working class. At the front they are fighting Fascism. Behind the front they are actually constructing the new Workers' Society. They see that the war against Fascism and the carrying through of the Social Revolution are inseparable. Those who have seen and understand what they are doing must honour them and be grateful to them. They are resisting Fascism. They are at the same time creating the New Workers' Order which is the only alternative to Fascism. That is surely the biggest things now being done by the workers in any part of the world." And in another place: "The great solidarity that existed amongst the Anarchists was due to each individual relying on his own strength and not depending on leadership. The organisations must, to be successful, be combined with a free-thinking people; not a mass, but free individuals." - Fenner Brockway

In Spain during almost three years, despite a civil war that took a million lives, despite the opposition of the political parties (republicans, left and right Catalan separatists, socialists, Communists, Basque and Valencian regionalists, petty bourgeoisie, etc.), this idea of libertarian communism was put into effect. Very quickly more than 60% of the land was collectively cultivated by the peasants themselves, without landlords, without bosses, and without instituting capitalist competition to spur production. In almost all the industries, factories, mills, workshops, transportation services, public services, and utilities, the rank and file workers, their revolutionary committees, and their syndicates reorganized and administered production, distribution, and public services without capitalists, high salaried managers, or the authority of the state. The various agrarian and industrial collectives immediately instituted economic equality in accordance with the essential principle of communism, 'From each according to his ability and to each according to his needs.' They coordinated their efforts through free association in whole regions, created new wealth, increased production (especially in agriculture), built more schools, and bettered public services. They instituted not bourgeois formal democracy but genuine grass roots functional libertarian democracy, where each individual participated directly in the revolutionary reorganization of social life. They replaced the war between men, 'survival of the fittest,' by the universal practice of mutual aid, and replaced rivalry by the principle of solidarity.... This experience, in which about eight million people directly or indirectly participated, opened a new way of life to those who sought an alternative to anti-social capitalism on the one hand, and totalitarian state bogus socialism on the other. "In the midst of the civil war the Anarchists have proved themselves to be political organizers of the first rank. They kindled in everyone the required sense of responsibility, and knew how, by eloquent appeals, to keep alive the spirit of sacrifice for the general welfare of the people. "As a Social Democrat I speak here with inner joy and sincere admiration of my experiences in Catalonia. The anti-capitalist transformation took place here without their having to resort to a dictatorship. The members of the syndicates are their own masters and carry on the production and the distribution of the products of labor under their own management, with the advice of technical experts in whom they have confidence. The enthusiasm of the workers is so great that they scorn any personal advantage and are concerned only for the welfare of all." - Andrea Oltmares

"The economic changes that followed the military insurrection were no less dramatic than the political. In those provinces where the revolt had failed the workers of the two trade union federations, the Socialist UGT and the Anarchosyndicalist CNT, took into their hands a vast portion of the economy. Landed properties were seized; some were collectivized, others were distributed among the peasants, and notarial archives as well as registers of property were burnt in countless towns and villages. Railways, tramcars and buses, taxicabs and shipping, electric light and power companies, gasworks and waterworks, engineering and automobile assembly plants, mines and cement works, textile mills and paper factories, electrical and chemical concerns, glass bottle factories and perfumeries, food-processing plants and breweries, as well as a host of other enterprises, were confiscated or controlled by workmen's committees, either term possessing for the owners almost equal significance in practice. Motion-picture theatres and legitimate theatres, newspapers and printing shops, department stores and bars, were likewise sequestered or controlled as were the headquarters of business and professional associations and thousands of dwellings owned by the upper class. "In many communities money for internal use was abolished, because, in the opinion of Anarchists, "money and power are diabolical philtres, which turn a man into a wolf, into a rabid enemy, instead of into a brother." "Here in Fraga [a small town in Aragon], you can throw banknotes into the street," ran an article in a Libertarian paper, "and no one will take any notice. Rockefeller, if you were to come to Fraga with your entire bank account you would not be able to buy a cup of coffee. Money, your God and your servant, has been abolished here, and the people are happy." In those Libertarian communities where money was suppressed, wages were paid in coupons, the scale being determined by the size of the family. Locally produced goods, if abundant, such as bread, wine, and olive oil, were distributed freely, while other articles could be obtained by means of coupons at the communal depot. Surplus goods were exchanged with other Anarchist towns and villages, money being used only for transactions with those communities that had not adopted the new system. " - Burnett Bolloten

Indigenous societies are not magical, they simply have a better understanding of sustainable living which have been passed down from generation to generation through their oral traditions and so called myths. However, so called modern societies, who are no more than arrogant barbarians for the most part, have dismissed indigenous societies as superstitious or illiterate. Well, with the current conditions of our environment, a detached observer will more readily point to the societies attempting to burn down the planet and destroy the environment (their home) as the illiterate and barbaric societies wouldn’t you think.

@@platosbeard4449 and now you present a strawman argument which I never raised to try and beat me with it. I never claimed our way of life was sustianable or even desirable. I pointed out that the indigenous peoples you described never got to a size where they could do the damage we do. But please, I can see you're on your imaginary hioh ground and I'd hate to knock you off of it by pointing out that you ignored the points I raised about how past indigenous peoples ahve wiped out many animal species and replaced areas with monocultures that have impacted the wildlife and flora in those areas. Here's a little clue for you: all existence has an impact on everything that exists around it. To believe that this is somehow absent from indigenous people either today or in the past is to ignore reality. What might have been low impact because of the small numbers of people does not necessarily translate to low impact when those numbers swell to large proportions and they continue that way of life.

It would be interesting to see if Distributism might be an answer to the problems inherent with capitalism. Where everyone in a corporation was a true part owner of that corporation and not just a minuscule stock owner. The Mondragon, Spain model might be something that would fit between the pyramid scheme of capitalism and the supposed expert led panopticon of socialism.

BTW, I'm all for the notion that people that make our goods and services should have substantial ownership of the profits. I think that just makes good sense . Otherwise, you get workers alienated from what they are working on, and surely even the most ardent person on the right can imagine how that could be a bad thing if you want "only the best"?

..I believe you can add the following: People are so indoctrinated and conditioned to look to their 'betters' while their 'betters' in Eton etc are indoctrinated in the oppodite way. Basically it's brainwashing. One other contributory factor is, in GB there is a kind of conformism and conservatism that is almost genetic rather than taught. We Irish are a rebellous lot and the upside of that is we're difficult to 'train'. We like to see not 2 but 3 sides of an argument: these guys' views those guys' views and us guys' views..

Well said about ALL ideologies being nothing but a hypotheses about the possible world structure. "Power of ideology" shutting down all other ways of seeing the world. Also true about "silent" ideologies compare to "laud" ones, like communism or cristianity. The only problem here - that is true for SURVIVALISM too. Ecologism can be added as a 4th to the 3 "evels" he listed here. all THE SAME THINGS can be said about ecologism too. Even worse - ecologism triggers a division of nations and some of them indulging in discussions WHO is worthy of living and who is not, it welcomes DEATH of humans, it removes stigmas from wars and epidemics as they "help" to reduce amount of humans on earth, it made humans secondary to "planet" and tells humans they are NOT WORTHY of existence. 'Amount of materials used" is just one of artificial measures. Nothing wrong with inheritance right either. Families generate weath just as soon as they loose it. Nothing wrong with creating NEW things too. That is called "progress". In practice, different countries are in DIFFERENT STAGES and they need DIFFERENT IDEAS. There are even countries which need more people to progress faster. Saying "WE" the author has to be clear - his "WE" coveres only "first world". From that angle ecologism is just LOGICAL continuation of WESTERN VIEWS, just one more piece added to capitalism, to keep NEO-COLONIALISM GOING. Now lets stop development of the rest of the world by lecturing them how to stop consuming and drop thier hopes for better lives. Lets call them substandard for "irresponsible" lives full of uncontrolled reproduction and rised use of resources as they industrialise. People do not need to search for NEW IDEOLOGY, to get brainwashed yet again. It is time to pave a way to SEE what ALL ideologies are about. We cannot be free of them. They are the way WE SEE WORLD. Letting all of them COEXIST FREELY, examine them all the time and appling SIMULTANIOUSLY, as point of reference when applicable.

@Anette Mor - I think you might be doing a bit of post hoc reasoning here. You begin with the assumption that all western academics/writers/speakers etc like Monbiot MUST at heart be attempting to keep NEO_COLONIALISM going and then fit everything said to that assumption. I understand the issue of those who already enjoy a privileged life with all that technology etc. gives us, effectively wanting to prevent further, continued exponential growth. But ask yourself what the alternative is going to be?? Also, when countries such as India and Africa endorse right wing - might is right - winner takes all capitalist systems (just look at Russia?) what happens? A few get ridiculously wealthy and the rest still live in poverty.

there is an easy way out of this infinite growth system....it must be made financially worthwhile for people to start sharing the jobs we NEED people to do and working LESS. We have to stop working and doing anything FOR money and change to doing the work we NEED to have done. There would be no such thing as a shortage of jobs in a world that made it worthwhile to share the work we NEED to have done and work LESS. There would be no reason to create pointless jobs...and nobody would have to be anyone's slave.. building the rich people their mansions, yachts, and supercars and doing anything else they want slaves to do for their money. Nobody would have to be doing the jobs and making the shi* we don't need because it's a way to earn money and wasting resources and therefore you couldn't buy it anyway. There is no possible way out of an infinite growth system all the time people primarily work FOR money instead of primarily doing the work WE need and want to have done.

To me, the ideologie capitalism is grounded in the religions of the Middle East, accelerated by the misunderstood understanding of nature as a place for survival of «the strongest» - a place where we all constantly fight. The religions of the Middle East tell humans they are given the rights no other living creatures have. Old religions told the story of duty - a duty to care for nature.

Hi George and readers some rough points below - could they help PostCap and Raworth's movement or be worthwhile to you? We have to STEER it round - all points adjustable.. Love, Ian sorry, been off your feed) Lots of basic stuff by economists "right" but not a lot of work been done explaining Basic Balanced Economics or “Aiming for Steady State” - But Still Adjustable! Where could the world be now if there were alternatives, such as: stainless steel cars with wind-up windows, no built to fail, 4 wheels, an engine or electric drive that one can work on Proper regulation of advertising that helps people make a "right" choice - long-lasting stuff you can see and feel in a Department Store - old-style, one per City. But mainly Adv Standards Regulation against gimmicks, buried falsehoods. Also Budgets for TV and on-line 'counter-advertising' Education including plenty of hand-skill - bookbinding from 8 years old, leather-punch work 9 years old, pushing a needle through at 10 years old, simple woodwork, metal-work, cooking skills. All extended in high school. Tech drawing with a 0.9 mechanical pencil, so more people can easily express themselves, understand and be understood, etc etc Keeping up with the times-tables, addition facts, basic Trigonometry, Physics, electrics, mechanics, Statics (forces) chemistry. The World suddenly becomes full of interest as adults bring up children in awe of stuff around them, multi-skilled. Specialists with Width [global travel only every 10 years, perhaps] of knowledge, work and Experience AND Depth, technical ability HENCE: The following outcomes to create Better-Balanced Economics: 1. From all money creation at least a third To The Public Purse 2. Ring-fenced proportion to Eco-causes including some of the above education 3. Eco-Money to be available at Discounted rates for comprehensive Ultra-Insulation - but needs underfloor Micro-Cellar to warm the ground deep under (extra roof vent to shed surplus summer warmth by overnight 3-storey height airflow) large 2-litre tank useful in contact 3 sides and floor with the earth. Insulate one side and top with 6 inch [150 mm polystyrene. All polystyrene to be self-extinguishing. So 20-year money from commercial banks at 1.5% the 0.5 Returned via bank to libraries and schools for Education. End-of-20-year term fixed payment The money and agreement Cancelled. 4. Working towards a real economy not highly speculative - so ring-fenced Fin services Tax 5. Maybe a Luxuries Tax. These were tried and proven in Australia before, as you say the so-called Freedoms. Yes the freedoms of coops, and a lot of market freedom to work and earn but not to Rip Off could be a good start on the way remembering £1/US$/Euro = 1lb CO2 (0.454kg) 6. End Big bosses expense accounts - effectively tax evasion. Some limits there, and for businesses beyond a certain size end their Vat exemption credits. 7. End wasteful demolition, much of the historic fabric can be retained - sides and rear ultra-insulated retaining "interestingness of Existence" Arnold Bennett [Old Wives Tale, etc.] 8. in other words BALANCING THE ANGLO-AMERICAN SYSTEM, esp finances [see Richard Werner on money, Japanese "crash" and central banks role; see Money as Debt puts it plainly]. But as Monbiot says Much More thinking is Needed. 9. AIM FOR INTEREST RATES on Deposits regulated - Fairness in Finance, say 0.5% by September 2021, 1% by December 2021, 2% by December 2022, 3% by December 2023 making it easy to remember. Possibly Base rates the same as Deposits on all except Eco-Money (recognising most of the inflation is via money-creation itself which is Yet to be Charged for, unless base rate can be Collected on all new money) 10 all the above, I am amazed the academics including Keynes didn't work it out, but maybe they did not get the handskill and later building design skill and TIME OVERSEAS in humble occupations to see it hands-on FINALLY: 11. ECO-TAX justifiable on the resale profits in the wealthy countries again Ring-Fenced but this time HALF THE DOLLAR VALUE RETURNED TO POORER COUNTRIES for their Eco-Means, Solar, Sea Barrage Barriers, etc (eg Bengal Bay 'Freshwater Bay' (eventually) Barrage CHEERS to all your readers, Could that all be just a good Start, all Adjustable, but a start? PS can you help get VAT removed from Insulation - it should be Zero-Rated

I don’t understand what the point of saying he isn’t a communist. Why say that? How does that forward the conversation or help his argument? It was probably a way to appeal to the less radical like many neoliberals do but why make the appeal when you are now creating a wedge between the radical and less radical from the start.
