Why does nobody talk about the actual reasons why the conservative party called the referendum. Reflecting back to 2015 the conservatives where more interested in self preservation and staying in power then actually trying to lead a country. Sure there is an inherent split in the party between the pro EU and brexiters but surly there could have been another option rather than call a referendum? The choice that was made basically risk everything to win the popular vote and stop UKIP in its tracks, preserving power and to make sure they wouldn’t be challenged in 2020. The most recent general election was a complete shambles with the conservatives being propped up by DUP so not really having full control over the house and now they are expected to negotiate brexit. And the result? Probably another change of leadership as Mrs.May is sacrificed to make way for another. It’s at what cost to the people for the conservatives to continue their rein over government. Regardless of the outcome we can be sure that the 1922 committee will be plotting the next 10 years of prosperity for the party and not the people.

It's a bankrupt point because it is pretty much the only reason politicians hold referendums. Internal splits in the Labour party was why the first common market referendum was held. The devolution referendums were held because Labour were worried about the SNP and the AV referendum was held to get the support of the Lib Dems for a coalition.

I recognise Alistair's skill and work history as a SPAD/Strategist and he does model his style on American strategy like Karl Rove and the Australian Lynton Crosby. I thought the Blair Government was the best period and excepting the Iraq War which is a shame on this society, the middle "third way" is the best solution to UK's politics. You need a party that's Conservative on Fiscal/Money and Labour on Social,NHS,EDU. A.Campbell was a master as a strategist and PR Head, a really skilled man. One thing I would point out is how 'American' he is here - his style and pace - personally I find him to be a bit of a pressuring host on these GQ videos, it's as if he's an attorney asking leading questions. Anyway, these videos have some use.

Osborne's decision to introduce 'Austere conditions' for the purpose of lowering debt was unecssary. No PM or Gov has ever managed to get debt down significantly and the UK has a very good Credit Rating. I posit that the austerity he imposed caused all the problems we have today - Food banks, Brexit, poor supporting Tories etc. He did do one thing right, balancing the Domestic Debt from the permanently negative balance of trade (UK Current Account). The UK hasn't had a surplus since the 1950s.

Totally correct. Lot's of OECD nations had a larger debt-to-GDP ratios than the UK (some, like Japan, way higher).

Why didn’t you challenge them on the NHS promise and immigration???? Because that would have exposed the lies you and Cameron made on failing to deliver on your manifesto in the coalition government beforehand.

I don't know why I love Campbell interviewing politicians so much. These two looked like Ying and Yang but they both seemed to be playing the same tune. Alistair Darling, David Miliband or John Major interview next?

Campbell interviews people below him so he gets to be grilling. Not sure how it would work with someone "above" him like Major

If Alastair Campbell performs a backflip preceded by multitudinous headspins in a collaboration rap cover music video of 'N***as in Paris' ft. MC George Osborne, then I will personally dissolve Parliament and negotiate our entrance back into the EU. Cogitate on this proposal carefully my guy.

Interesting, and honest in places, just cant seem to take his rightful blame as the catalyst for the mess the country is in. Austerity was and is a choice that tories wilfully turn a blind eye to the destruction it causes for most. If it looks okay in the south-east, it fine........

I think Gordon and Tony would have done exactly the same think post crash (which happened on their watch). They just wouldn't have called it austerity.
