George Osodi on the Kings of Nigeria and Boko Haram - REWIND
Ten years ago, in November 2006, Al Jazeera English was launched. To mark that anniversary, we've created REWIND, which updates some of the channel's most memorable and award-winning documentaries of the past decade. We find out what happened to some of the characters in those films and ask how their stories have developed in the years since our cameras left.
In 2013, filmmaker Katharina von Schroeder went to Nigeria for an Artscape series, called The New African Photography.
The central character of her film, photographer George Osodi, was in the middle of completing a stunning collection of images documenting the devastating effects of oil spills in Nigeria's Delta region.
The film followed Osodi as he moved on to photograph Nigeria's traditional monarchs - offering a unique insight into the diverse culture, history and traditions of his country. Although there is very little known about the many different royalties in Nigeria, they are considered to be a major part of Nigerian history.
Back then, Osodi said : "[There are] frequent clashes among different ethnic groups," says Osodi. "Lots of people have lost trust in their identity. I felt it was important that we see this diverse culture as a point of unity instead of seeing it as something that should divide us as a nation."
Now in 2016, Osodi tells REWIND how his life and work have moved on.
He talks about his latest projects, including a series of photographs looking at the victims of Boko Haram.
"The Boko Haram phenomenon is another sad story from Nigeria. There's this class of people who people don't talk much about. I call them the victims of Boko Haram. Many of them are kids whose parents have been killed in the cause of militancy and conflict. We have kids who have lost their parents, some died in bombings, some died while refusing to become members of Boko Haram," says Osodi.
"So I travelled down to the north east on various times, trying to explore and see what happens to these kids, who is taking care of them. For me it's to create a strong visual awareness that will probably influence people in authority to make a change. I think that's my responsibility."

Thank you Mohammad Zubayer for recalling on the Garveyite movement of Marcus Garvey. My father was from Benin and we were born in London England but dad took his wife and our mother home with me and my two brothers. My dad was with the Navy and was in the great march with Dr Martin Luther King, 'I have a dream', Black Panther's and then came to U.K to tell us a wealth of his knowledge and wisdom. We were shown our uncles golf course which he chose to still have up the signs from colonisation times, 'No Blacks' to remind the people visiting in the present times of what was then 'the norm'. KING TAHARKA IN AFRICA KUSHITES MORES...Thankfully my father gave me my rightful history. Greetings from London, Bowuni from Sapele too 👋🏾

As an African from Mali, I agree with most of your points, but this is our continent and we will not taint it with Eurocentric values or any other forms of colonialism, any further. We must have an African style government, with African values. Europe got to do things their own way, why can't we?

collins dion And that is why I wasn't speaking to you. I doubt you know anything about our history, and therefore have no say in how we govern ourselves now. We would've been just fine without Europeans intervening and stripping us of our natural identity... We just want to be Africans, but as long as Europe has a say in our internal affairs, we will never gain back what was lost.

Wonderful job Mr. George Osodi, well done. Thanks a lot for the photos and videos. I'm extremely impressed and proud to see that King@19.20, being the longest serving in Africa and second longest in the whole world is really a blessing. Unfortunately, things have fallen apart even after colonization, over the past decades, corrupt politicians and military regimes made things worst in Nigeria and the whole continent. I'm curtain that Africa is rising again.

Our responsibility is to take full control of our resources and the conditions under which we choose to exploit them. Strangers will never care about our environment the same way we do. We are the only ones to blame for these issues since we are the ones letting this happen on our land. We're sleeping with our ennemies and then blaming them because the bed is dirty. It's about time to clean the house.

Traditional rulers have excelled in community stewardship over the centuries so in the absence of good governance, it is natural for them to provide community leadership. I do think it is important for traditional rulers to infuse leadership skills back into the community. One way civil society can fight powerful oil companies and environmental degradation, like George Osodi has documented, is through community organization but you need leadership. The other path is war.
@deenpindar
@deenpindar 7 жыл бұрын
Its a brilliant idea you have there, but the Nigerian constitution does not recognize the "power" of traditional rulers. Hence they are not able to make significant changes in their societies, which is very unfortunate given that the traditional rulers are valued more as opposed to the politicians. One of the traditional rulers in the documentary tried to put it in a nuance way when he said their job (traditional rulers) is to complement the government (politicians).

Nigerian is an example of how the failure and corruption has failed the state even when they have oil. The only country in Africa that made it's resources valuable and put to use and for the benefit of peope was Libya under Colonel Muammar Gaddafi until NATO came and destroyed the country and no African country stood by Libya when Gaddafi wax unifying the whole Africa into one and trade and establish the Gold currency.

ROBERT BRUCE sorry u feel that way. But I'm ready to enlighten u, the same western historians who told u African kings sold ur ancestors said and i quote "the European came with superior weapons, an their prime motive was to get men ". Now how much could they have possibly sold ur forefathers? A white shirt, a mirror and a hot drink? My friend some stories are told to suit the perpetrators of the crime. Slavery was a bad thing granted, but think on ur own before u try to place blame on ur brothers.

Well there is the fact of superior weapons technology. The Zulu were one of the first people to have a gatling gun used against them, and they called it 'the laughing gun'. A small platoon of some 12 men wiped out hundreds of zulu warriors that day. It has since been known to every zulu child since. King Shaka was the last great king of Africa, and he was betrayed by his own aunts. My young brother, seek out and listen to Credo Mutwa. You are on the right track. Whites are blamed for slavery, when the blame REALLY lays firmly on Africa's 'kings' doorstep. Don't listen to the stories, don't listen to the missionaries. Africans had knowledge of the 'light' before the white man showed up. They had religion and spirituality, contrary to what the white man would have you believe. Look into that ancient african religion, and there you will find truth.

How that system of leadership in Africa is setup in not the truth order of leadership that's why is not working. A leader has to first have very strong moral, spiritual, ethical and wise convictions like a king. African has always had problems with having leaders with such qualities, that was one of the advantages the Caucasian arms of the north had over Nubia's continent of Ethiopia. No leadership was really ever had a strong understand of the value of moral, spiritual, ethical or wise based sense of governing (With the exception of Nelson Mandela). If Nubia's continent of Ethiopia doesn't unite under God commandments and pass laws in regard to the human rights for all IN THE LAND under those commandments and create a continental united Nubian Army of Ethiopia to enforce those laws ( which you call Africa), you will always be a concurred people; for lack of faith in aligning yourself with the word of God in Christ. Mankind can not civilize himself, it is the word of God which civilizes mankind.

terrance leacock you are wrong, certain African country (Ethiopia to be exact) had leadership governed by morals and ethics, spirituality, and religion; Emperor Haile Selassie the first (who influenced Neilson Mandela and many other black leaders) was a great leader who ruled with dignity, faith, love, courage and a just cause. He promoted collective security, peace and justice, brotherhood, among many other benefaction. Furthermore Ethiopia was the oldest Christian Nation in the world, ruled my many great emperors who possessed the qualities which you listed, plus more; it is obvious that you don't know much about African history.

+Rock Roll no I not your a liar plain and simple it the leaders of Africa are so moral why are the people of Africa seem so disconnected from the world. terrance leacock terrance leacock why does China India and some other non-African countries considered as third world countries? why do these countries also not have proper roads? if these 1st world country are as great as they claim why are there still people suffering (terrible health care system, social injustice, etc)? there are African countries (mainly in the large cities: Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, etc) that have roads like those in the first world country. They cannot control the media/false propaganda of the Western world. the only reason why Africa is not as strong as it should be is because they are not united. Many great inventions that originated in the west were created and enhace by Blacks (stop light, cellular phone, refrigerator, fire extinguisher, almanac, blood plasma bag, elevator, gas mask, and the list goes on); black inventions changed history and contributed to business, science, technology, etc; they why are they still considered inferior? without blacks countries like America wouldn't be so great ( this is fact). they spread propaganda so as to keep us down, they control the media and the great armies and weapons of mass destruction. we create they steal our ideas and make it theirs (even our music). All that blacks encounter is ordained by God. if they showed more faith in God and unity among themselves they wouldn't be seen as inferior. because they dissed God like the Children of isreal they were brought down low and delivered into the hands of their enemies. God came to deliver them but their faith was weak and their intentions were selfish. when will they learn? smdh

You really need a good mirror, Just look at the state of this country that has oil. Then take a look at "Saudi Arabia", No one else to blame but yourselves & now you're doing it all over again & still not looking in the mirror!! We all have eyes can't keep these lies going we have the internet no excuse to stay ignorant!!
