George R.R. Martin Calls Out Rings of Power/Witcher Showrunners for Bad Adaptations

In another recent blog post George went out of his way to call out all the bad adaptations he has seen in recent years where showrunners and writers try to "improve on" the source material and "make it their own". While George doesn't outright say who these criticisms are aimed out we pretty much can guess who the culprits are.

House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal for HBO. It is a prequel to the television series Game of Thrones and is based on Martin's 2018 novel Fire & Blood. Rings of power was pure trash. I prefer Tolkien’s lore over GRRM, but still, GRMM’s role in HOTD only helps the show. I’m tired of so many established franchises being done so terrible by these show writers writing something the author never could. I’m glad major author currently alive such as GRRM calls this crap out. I don’t care or want stories changed to pander to their narrative etc, give us a story that respects the established world and lore.

Often the _Rings of Power_ detractors go too far. They'll point to Galadriel's depiction as a warrior-woman as "pandering to a narrative", when Tolkien himself wrote "she [Galadriel] was then of Amazon disposition and bound up her hair as a crown when taking part in athletic feats". I think where ROP failed was presentation. It felt too much like TV, where people are supposed to meet at the water cooler the next day and debate which of the three mystery men are secretly Sauron, like it's _Lost_ or something. But Tolkien shouldn't feel like _Lost,_ it shouldn't feel mystery-box-y, Tolkien spoiled _Lord of the Rings_ in its own Preface or Prologue. And ROP had a certain cringiness that I think really comes from detailed things that are hard to verbalize without a good grasp of cinematography and stuff. But all that gets obscured when people are just blaming all the crumminess and story divergences on "pushing narratives".

He doesn’t believe GOT was his fault because the show runners cut so much material and “rushed him” which is why they ran out of material and then once they started to surpass him they demoralized him making the problem even worse. He has a point but I don’t have faith he would have finished in time even if they would have adapted everything (including feast/dance stuff). For Witcher and rings though there is absolutely no excuse - the stories were complete before production even began. There is a difference between taking from other things and changing it to make something distinct versus adapting something for a different medium and pretending like it’s the same story then changing core characters/plot points

THANK YOU. People take that which they didn't create and dare to think they can do it better, and somehow they're surprised and iffended when people hate that it doesn't retain the spirit and essence of the thing they loved. I can appreciate that SOME change might be necessary in adaptation because you just don't tell stories the same in each medium, but regardless of whatever changes are made, it should never be done at the expense of the characters, the story, and its core ideas. The Witcher, Rings of Power, Velma, so much of recent MCU, the list goes on. I agree with the former showrunner of X-Men '97. People who work on adaptations should have to either personally like or respect the material they're working with. They are not for you to do literally whatever you want with them.

I doubt it as well with a caveat. Game of Thrones ran out of source material to adapt. Although it did start to go down hill for me in season 4, it totally jumped the shark when the source material ran out after S5 finale. So I don’t think he was talking about Game of Thrones, but I’m sure he was not happy with the latter seasons when he wasn’t involved ie s6 and beyond.

You can add what AMC claims are adaptations of Anne Rice’s two most popular book series - The Vampire Chronicles and Mayfair Witches. TVC especially has little resemblance to the source material. If she were alive, she would be so heart broken to see what they’ve done. (To forestall any arguments, simply Watch her you tube videos. She didn’t want any changes.)

i agree when its about a long awaited first adaptation, but the more the original becomes a classic with tons of reiterations the more i want some new spin on it (dracula, frankenstein and hyde, jane austen etc)

You both are ridiculous. Rings of power is not an adaptation. There are only a handful of written pages referring to this time period. The fact that it isn't really related to Tolkien's work is the reason they don't get to use so many basic words (like hobbit, gandalf, etc..)

3:32 i sort of disagree with that. The Boys comics is not bad it is painfully bad… And it might be on purpose? Like the thing about the The Boys comic is that it is a EDGY parody of superheroes but at the same time it is a deconstruction of the entire comicbook industry. Garth Ennis(the writer of The Boys comics) was one of the writers who popularised extreme violence, sexual content and profanity in mainstream comics. And seeing his success many copycats came who became more successful than him because they wrote “superhero” comics even though these comics are HORRIBLE and worse than The Boys. And DC comics REJECTED The Boys comics after five issues because he was showing superheroes in “bad” light. After getting rejected Ennis has openly stated that he changed a lot of the story elements. After the fifth issue many of the dialogues and storylines feel like they were purposefully changed to be painfully average . IG Ennis was like if my copycats are not putting any effort into their comics and are more successful than me then why should i put any effort. And sadly the boys became a success. Since then he comes up with really good ideas like crossed comics but is not interested in exploring them thoroughly. And when he does explore them in a comic, they don’t sell.

Greetings... This is a truly strange moment for me. I'm actually going to agree with George R R Martin on something. I've been saying for years (as a Tolkienesque novelist) that screenwriters/showrunners are not REAL writers, they are functionally over hyped editors. In most cases they take an original IP, turn up their nose(s) at the creator, and twist it into a big ball of cinematic garbage.

Don't forget - making it "better" means making it for MODERN AUDIENCES. Take anything that has races of characters being restricted to their own regions as history records; melding everyone together so you have no idea about original ancestry of realms. Tolkien's writing were based on northern European mythology. Black panther comics (Wakanda) are based on African culture. Vikings are Norse, and so on and so forth. Too many showrunners like to say "it's fantasy, which means we can change things and do what we want." All fans want is to see faithful adaptations! I feel like GOT and HOTD have done a pretty good job with this. You can look at each realm and say, yep, those are northerners, and yep, those people are from Dorne, many black people have come from across the sea/mariners and traders, and seem to stay along the coastal and island areas, etc. All this is important when educating us on the looks and customs of all the different regions. Rings of Power have literally every race in every corner of Middle Earth, as if they followed a checklist, so you have no idea where any of the scenes are actually being shot in. You don't get the specific culture and rich history of a region as you do in the books.

I think that people just want their shows (fantasy/historical shows/fantasy adaptations) to succeed on the same scale Game of Thrones did (never mind season 8), so they call it “something’s blah blah Game of Thrones”. Notice how most of these series get titles like that before they even air (like “this show is going to be the next Game of Thrones!”) and often end up telling very different stories and highlight different values/issues than GoT (so essentially they shouldn’t be presented as the next GoT). Basically, it's just because of clout and wanting for the show to perform on the same level as GoT did, but instead of marketing it's contents, they're being presented as similar and thus constantly compared to GoT (like, they said about live action of Avatar the Last Airbender that it'll be like next GoT, or that it should "appeal to Game of Thrones fans"... like what?? why?? these stories are so different, marketing it like this could be misleading to a bunch of people), which I think is a disadvantage - for these new shows - by the way, since (even with the way the franchise ended) GoT ia a giant and it is hard to reach it's level.

Watching the cartoon as a kid, I always disliked Spiderman and hoped one of the more interesting villains would kill him. Not that it would make any sense to give such a villain their own movie.

Really surprised to hear Preston talk about Akira. Now he needs to watch Evangelion, even if it's just by it's sheer cultural importance and significance to the manga/anime industry. GRRM is obviously right, and he is obviously also thinking about GoT and HotD when he made those remarks, but he can't say it directly. For the most part, the western entertainment industry simply doesn't care one bit about the source material (if not they literally hate it & what it represents), they use it as a vehicle to further their obsessions (modern politics, basically). When you hear the catchphrase "updated for modern audiences" you know the work wasn't centered into making a passionate love letter to whatever IP they are adapting, but just using that franchise to tell the same exact thing they are telling in the other dozens and dozens of franchises they are repurposing for "modern audiences". The talent isn't there because nowadays you hire people based on what they are and what they think about X,Y & Z, not about their actual talents. And the focus isn't so much into making art, but making literally cookie cutter propaganda. Everybody is an activist now and there's nothing more important than being that, until it runs out of fashion and the next cultural trend comes out, obviously.
