The tree looks good Paul, keep it covered until next spring when the roots have dug in.

Thanks George, will do. The new growth is very satisfying to look at. It's the first thing I check after work!

Very nice and neat garden Paul! Does the ice cream bean taste good? Have you tried it before?
@UrbanBounty9 ай бұрын
Thanks Sang La. I don't know what the Ice Cream Bean tastes like yet, I am just trusting the taste testing from other youtube people 😀

What a great corner that will be although I suspect that ice cream bean will pretty much take over in 2 or 3 years lol
@UrbanBounty9 ай бұрын
Lol, yeah I'm hoping I can get it to stay single stemmed until its over the shade cloth hence all the support I have in place, then I plan on it growing umbrella shape.. but plans dont always work out 😆

It's really impressive how just about every square inch of your yard is utilized to it's fullest fruit growing potential. Nice planned area for around the pond

Thanks mate, I just have to decide where to heat the pond with solar or or standard electricity

Great job with the planting, Paul. That's a great idea to use the ice cream bean tree to shade that area as it matures 👍

Paul, Well thought out mate, The ice cream bean and the heated pond will definitely lay a great foundation towards what you are trying to achieve. Perfect spot for the Achacha mate.

Thanks Gab, after seeing your oasis it means a lot if you say I'm on the right track with the more sensitive plants!

How do you see the Achacha and Ice cream bean growing less than a meter apart against a fence?
@UrbanBounty9 ай бұрын
Ice cream bean is nitrogen fixing in the soil just like normal beans so it will actually feed the achacha and in Melbourne im guessing it will be ten years before the achacha touches the ice cream bean. Most of my tropicals are hard up against structure which gets them through winter. You can check out Gregs channel TheTropicalGardenGuy and he's in a climate similar to Melbourne with 25 year old tropicals like lychee, longan and some younger achacha and he plants them only a few inches away from his house walls and fences. It seems to work. I wouldn't plant an apple or apricot so close though. Cheers

Ice cream bean trees give great shade! For some reason small trees grown in the shade of other trees do better than under shadecloth. That mulchi is gonna test you! They are pretty cold sensitive, the dward mulchi (salticola) is the hardest plant ive tried to grow!
@UrbanBounty9 ай бұрын
G'day Doug thanks for the heads up on the Mulchi. I left it under my carport but otherwise unprotected this winter because I thought it was around as hardy as a jabo but I wont risk it again in the future knowing that it's sensitive now!

I'll keep you posted. It seems the more we plant then the protection that follows means we can plant more. I'm only planting locally rare stuff going forward 👍and now I'm going to research poshte lol
