Love this memory! George and The Band was such a good time. He sang his little heart out. Every time I listen to this my memory goes back to those days of fun and folly. 37 years ago now and his voice still sounds the same. My life has been more enjoyable thanks to George, and a good bottle of 80 proof. Yes Fort Worth crosses my mind ever now and then. Everybody swing! At 70 the HonkTonks are just a memory, good ones but just a memory. I loved the Ace in the Hole band they were the best on the road. They never missed a beat. George has never sang a song that I did not like. I wish him good health and lots of love. I know he is busy making more good music.

I was on the elevated stage for the 1st show Geroge Strait put on for about 2 Hrs. I was friends with the lead guitar player for the Gilley's House Band and got me and my coaching buddy up the stage about 15 or 20 feet from the Band. What a thrill to was to be that close to the band and George Strait. 1985.

Last time I went to Gilley's I almost broke a tie-rod driving through that pot-holed parking lot , and then one of their little Mexican helpers put a Gilley's sticker on my bumper, ended up pulling off the chrome trying to get the sticker off. It was so far to the restrooms people were pissing in the back corner near the punching bag and pool tables. That place was pretty wild even when it was half-ass dead. Pasadena was a wild town back then, it's nothing like the good old days now. {='(

My dad used to put W40 on his bumper when he went to Gilleys. He now says he wishes that he had saved them , he recently noted tht my apts had more potholes than the Gilleys parking lot. He used to take me out there when I was a kid. I live just down the street from where the club was.

This was the the good ole days. I was a George Straight fan from the first time I heard him preform. There will never be another place like Gilley's. You can hardly find a place where the Cowboys and Cowgirls still wear their hats, boots and do the two step. The only good country music we have is that from George Straight, Alan Jackson, Willie Nelson, and alot of the great ones that are no longer with us. Some of the music they call country music now days is not worth a crap. Sure wish it was like the days of Urban Cowboy.

Is this the performance that I took my girlfriend and 2 of her friends to??? He showed up very late...if I remember it was pushing 11:00 PM before he sang the 1st song. So crowded it was 5 or 6 deep at the bar (and there were many bars to get drinks...but all of them were packed so you couldn't get a drink). Anyway, when he got on stage most girls stood on chairs to get a good view...then others stood on tables to see over the heads of the girls standing on the chairs...All you could see was a HIGH wall of people facing the stage. We left after one or two songs and went to the SAN ANTONIO ROSE :)

Gilley's was a really wild place. Today you couldn't run a club like that. The bathrooms were bad. Folks used to piss in the parking lot. The owner Sherwood Cryer was a true character. The only real history of Gilley's you can find is in the book Music City Babylon by Scott Faragher. Great book on country music and how the business really runs. You can find it on Amazon and in some libraries. The author was a talent agent in Nashville, his agency was In Concert Intl. The book has incredible stories, well worth reading.

@floresnashvilledrummer10 жыл бұрын
Tocooper, by this time he had just released his fourth album "Does Ft. Worth Ever Cross Your Mind". The only songs off that album played here are: The Fireman, Any Old Time and the title track. He had a few #1's by now so he was becoming a household name nationwide and more than just a "guy in a cowboy hat" and his three previous album had all at least gone Gold. Bear in mind, this show was also in Texas where he had been a star attraction even before he was ever a signed act. Later this year he would win Album of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year.
