@Al Bundy for President I agree. What he did that made the part come alive is that he truly believed he was in the right, and to be fair, he WAS wronged. He was sent to the planet as punishment but they were forgotten about! So from his character's perspective, he was right to go after who he thought had done this to him. In his head, he was the good guy. He gave the part depth and dimension.

@Al Bundy for President And they need to retire those villains. Studios want to feed us the same crap again and again to sell tickets. I hardly ever go to the movies anymore and spend a lot of my viewing time watching excellent TV shows like Breaking Bad or Mad Men which are far better written than most movies.

Personally I had a wonderful experience meeting William Shatner back in the 70's and later in 2017. He shook my hand and everything. My brother met and chatted with Leonard Nimoy a few years ago where he worked. He even made Nimoy laugh really hard, too. My brother worked at a Marriot in North Carolina and when Nimoy, a guest staying there, was getting on the elevator, my brother was asked to carry Nimoy's luggage. Ny brother, a so-so Star Trek fan (He's only into football), however, did recognized Nimoy. He remained stoic and professional as he entered the elevator with Nimoy. But Nimoy guffawed when my brother spoke to the Marriot elevator taking them both to Nimoy's floor; he said loudly enough for Nimoy to catch it; he said, ,"Bridge!" Nimoy, who had been equally quite and stoic as well, broke his silence, laughing and telling my brother, "That's a good one!? He invited my brother to have a drink with him after work, but my brother had to get home to watch his beloved football. Had that been me, I have joined Nimoy for a drink or two.

He was talking about culture and Hollywood and Conan totally cuts him off with something totally off topic saying he has a nice voice. Even Takei was a little like "WTF?" it seemed. Because George was getting political about it... "oh another white guy...." More identity politics trying to make the entire situation racist, when it's not. People, PLEASE stop making everything racist when it's not, it does NOT help end racism; it just stirs up MORE anger and hate when being accused of racism when they know they aren't racist. Doing this repeatedly over and over solves nothing and makes things worse. This is why political correctness is cancer. We can deal with racism when it actually occurs, NOT WHEN YOU FORCE IT TO HAPPEN. People got upset when they changed the race of Hermione Granger from a white girl to a black woman when they Harry Potter on stage, but regressive lefts defended that, since As most regressive believe, black women are so oppressed. So a black woman deserved to take that role simply because she was black. If that's true, that's racism. However i tend to believe that wasn't the case and she was cast since she was the best person available at the time, after all this is *live stage performances,* not a movie that takes months/years to produce. The demands on actors for live stage acting is very intense and demanding, different than it is for TV, and less so for movies. However if a role that was established by a non-white person, in a movie, then in the future in a different production of the same story and character, said character is then cast by a white person.. everyone screams white wash, racism. Hypocrisy to the Nth degree.

Just a thought: is it just a teeny bit possible that Takei's comments about Shatner and Nimoy may not be intended to be taken entirely seriously? I have to agree with him on Khan - I was a bit mystified when Cumberbatch was revealed to be Khan, as the whole point of Khan's character is that he is a wannabe Sikh prince, and Cumber-Khan defeats that purpose (and would possibly have been better used as a different villain). However, I think it also must be said that Benedict Cumberbatch is an incredible actor, and his performance in 'Into Darkness' was phenomenal. In shooting terms, Takei to Shatner was a guy who came in occasionally, did his scene and left. If Takei wasn't in a scene, he wouldn't be on set, and unless Shatner shared that scene with him, he wouldn't be there either. Shatner. Nimoy. Kelly. Doohan. Nichols. Plus a superb supporting cast, and some of the best writing and directing to ever appear on-screen. The talents and personalities of those actors DEFINED the characters they played. A half-century later, their work is legendary. A century from now, it will STILL be legendary. William Shatner, I guess, is a complete package. Along with the talent and ability to COMPLETELY DEFINE his character (Capt. Kirk, TJ Hooker, Denny Crane), there must be a strong ego to go with it. There HAS to be. Let’s give the man his props. Hollywood is a competitive environment and a “contact sport”. Did “personality” issues hurt “original” Trek? Maybe. But the magic was always there, those issues aside. We got to enjoy it for three ground-breaking seasons and six theatrical movies (again,TOS cast). Even the Shatner-directed ST:V had it’s moments.

Shatner should learn a thing or two about being a leading actor to his co-stars ... even now, Shatner makes no apologies about not being friendly to his supporting cast Takei who he has worked with in over 50 episodes and many movies insisting that he does not know who Takei is, and his excuse was that he needed to remember his lines but he had no time to be friendly to actors in a smaller recurring role ... that just sounds like Shatner is being big-headed and too self-important to chat with his co-stars ....

I'll get the name of the extra on Star Trek OS. He has has a video on you tube which contradicts everything Takei says. He said Shatner never took his parts,was always very friend to all and very professional. Shatner has been in many films TV series etc and all of them state love and respect for him. Makes one think. When one listens closely to those 4 they share a sense of entitlement. Takei admitted being angry at Koenig whom he had not even met at the time because he got the role which originally was Takei but Takei was still busy on a film when the new season of Star Trek began. Nichelle described on video how the big shots were against her and Shatner's interracial kiss. Shatner,however insisted that it was in the script and must be done. Then they decided to shoot one with and one without the kiss. Shatner then said to start with the kiss. He was,however not satisfied with the scene until there was just enough time for filming one scene without the kiss. Then Shatner crossed when he looked up and that scene was spoiled. When the big shots later discovered it they then allowed the scene with the interracial kiss. Nicholls ONLY CREDITED THE BIG SHOTS. THERE WAS NO ACKNOWLEDMENT, CREDIT OR APPRECIATION FOR SHATNER WHO FOUGHT AND SAVED HER DIGNITY. NONE WHATSOEVER. SHE ONLY SAID CREDIT TO THE BIG SHOTS ON THE FOLLOWING MONDAY. WOW!!!!

On the Nimoy thing i think you can sense the comment was in joking manner, in fact he has praised Nimoy on loyalty by saying to the executives making the animated series that he will not do the voice of Spock if the full original cast do the voices. On Shatner it dates back of how he behaved on set and how he did take credit on times where other people should have taken it. One famous story i think is the TV Guide article where Nimoy was interviewed and was about the Spock character. When Shatner saw and heard about it he exercised his clause in contract, where he approves photographers on sets. And Takei isn't the only one problems with Shatner, he just blasts him everytime he can which have become somewhat dull.

Part of what I didn't like in Into Darkness was Khan's reveal; "My name is KHAN." He really puts the emphasis on his name, I guess to fill Kirk and crew with fear...except they have no clue who Khan is, and Khan knows they have no clue, so why does he play up his name like anyone gives a shit? In the original series, when Khan introduces himself, he does it plainly, because no one yet knows his history. It was just one of a hundred different examples where Abrams turn against the canon to make the films his own way. Of course, there was all the other stupid stuff like no one noticing an unregistered extra shuttle showing up to the super-secret shipbuilding factory. There's the "transwarp beaming" or whatever it was called, with the ability to warp from Earth to Chronos many light years away...so why bother with spacecraft at all? The planting of the frozen people inside Torpedoes to quietly erase them, when there are a million ways to dispose of them (like beaming them into the sun). The list goes on and on, but we are all supposed to have hard-ons for Abram's films because he included a tribble or had Spock scream "KHAN!!!" The film I would like to see is the Wrath of Khan, but with the effects technology and budget of Into Darkness...THAT would have been a good film.
@jomormont

It may have been unorthodox to cast him as Khan, but Cumberbatch was brilliant, and I will forever think of Cumberbatch as Khan now or a great villain. (He's apparently Smaug/Necromancer too).
@kev3d
@kev3d 10 жыл бұрын
Fate Toms "A" villain, not Khan. He didn't behave as Khan, he wasn't smooth like Khan, he doesn't look like Khan, he wasn't charismatic like Khan. And if one wants to play the "alternate timeline" card, well Khan predates the time-pretzel created in the previous film. Thus, according to canon, Khan should be Montalban, or someone very near to him. Cumberbatch was a bore.
@jomormont
@jomormont 10 жыл бұрын
kev3d One who is a fan of the original film will have a hard time digesting a different take on Khan for sure, but if imagining you never even had seen the first original film, you might change your opinion. He took the name Khan, but he is not the Khan you grew up to know, he's basically the opposite.
@kev3d
@kev3d 10 жыл бұрын
Fate Toms I wasn't born when Khan debuted on the TV show, but later I appreciated the continuity between the original series and the second film. But with the Abrams films, there was none of that continuity, with the exception of Spock, but even he was rewritten into a role which made no sense, but that's another discussion. Not only was the actor who played Khan totally different, but the Khan character was totally different (and boring). If you are going to have a character who is "the opposite" of the original, why pretend he is the same character? Make him a different villain and be done with it. Chocolate is fine on it's own, it doesn't need to pretend that it is vanilla.

But that's a bit different than saying they know what they'll say in advance. They have an expectation of what they'll say, but the guest will say whatever they want to and I have to believe Conan was dodging a serious direction in the conversation he wasn't prepared for. William Shatner, in his own words, didn't even know George Takei very well even though they "worked" together. Just because you work with someone doesn't mean you become life-long friends - life just doesn't work like that. Work is just that - you turn up, do your job and go home. Some people gravitate towards one another based on shared interests and some don't - again, that's life. It doesn't mean one person hates the other.
