It upsets me to see parents being used by ideologues. I am a university parent and was a student striker in 1969. I do not share these parents’ perceptions of what has happened and what is happening -there’s a lot of marching to the Party line in what they say. When we refer to peaceful demonstrators, we should understand that hardly any demonstrations would be considered successful if they did not, at least, attract some level of violence. This has to be a drama if it is to be influential. When i attended planning sessions for anti-war demonstrations, we planned acts that were designed to provoke a response from the police. The police have a vital role in this theatrical production. (To call it theatre is not to make light of it.) I feel for some of these parents, though they would not have much empathy for me. Nevertheless, I would like us all to be aware of how our universities are financed.
