The language of the Europeans could be very florid at that time so such letters would not be uncharacteristic. I do not mean to just dismiss your assertions, just to require more concrete evidence. Just because they keep endlessly talking about sucking cock and eating male ass means nothing, either! They’re just bros with a sense of humour! For crying out loud, they have girlfriends and wives! And no, they aren’t actresses or CGI! Why would a man act straight while gay? It’s impossible! Theatre only exists on a stage! The relationship between George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette was close and deeply affectionate, but historians overwhelmingly describe it as one of mutual admiration, respect, and a father-son-like bond rather than a romantic relationship. Lafayette, a young French nobleman, became like a surrogate son to Washington. He was only 19 years old when he joined the American Revolution, and Washington, 26 years his senior, took him under his wing. Washington had no biological children, and he referred to Lafayette in affectionate terms. In letters, he often called him "my dear Marquis," and Lafayette referred to Washington as a father figure. The bond was formed through shared experiences on the battlefield and a deep commitment to the cause of American independence. Historical letters and writings reflect a strong emotional connection, but this was not unusual for male friendships of the 18th century. At the time, emotional and affectionate language between male friends was more common and not necessarily indicative of romantic or sexual relationships. In short, the relationship between Washington and Lafayette is generally understood by historians to have been a profound friendship, not a romantic or sexual one. There is no credible historical evidence to suggest otherwise.

There is some evidence to suggest that Baron von Steuben was forced to leave the Prussian army and Prussia itself due to allegations of homosexuality. In 1777, von Steuben was accused of "unnatural vice" (a euphemism for homosexuality) and was forced to resign from the Prussian army. He then fled to France, where he eventually joined the Continental Army in the American colonies. It's important to note that: 1. Homosexuality was criminalized in Prussia at the time. 2. Von Steuben's dismissal from the Prussian army was likely due to the social and legal norms of the time. 3. While von Steuben's sexual orientation is not explicitly documented, his dismissal and subsequent flight suggest that he may have faced persecution due to his sexual orientation. Keep in mind that historical records from this era are limited, and interpretations vary among historians. However, it is widely acknowledged that von Steuben faced difficulties in Prussia due to allegations related to his personal life.

WOW As a proud gay man and lover of history, I am amazed at the liberties you take, and the assumptions you make about these characters from the past. The letters you cite as proof would have been written in a very different style and language than the idioms we use today. If you were a bit more educated about the culture of the time you would know that endearments used between men of the time may sound gay to a modern man but were polite and respectful then. It's easy to go around labeling everyone gay, but one wonders why you feel the need to?
@karlmiller50092 ай бұрын
I think your characterization of his work is unfair. He presents a defensible interpretation of a historical figure. It is true that George Washington had no children and chose to marry a widow with four children from a previous marriage. For someone of Washington’s age, social rank, demeanor, and appearance, it’s unusual he had no children at all. Not being attracted to women explains that fact relatively easily and quickly. The letters and verifiable “friendships” with other such men, make the argument of being attracted to men rather likely.

While you were quite correct when saying President Washington never came out as gay, it is important to recognize that in his time people did not think about identity, they just didn't (by and large) "talk about such things in polite society", so even if he were homosexual (or even bisexual) he would never have spoken of it in public.

@Giovanni De Luca You have no idea is he was gay or not. By saying he is definitely gay and there are no possibility that he was anything else, you are erasing those sexualities.

To classify Washington as gay because of the undertones of these letters is taking history out of its context. People spoke in a different manner back then as opposed to today. I'm not against the idea of GW being gay, I'm indifferent to the idea. If he was, he was. If he wasn't, he wasn't. It changes nothing

You should probably better not the uncertainty of this claim compared to many other claims, and/or provide more reliant sources, because it is not clear with the provided sources that he was gay. But the letters, if I'm not mistaken, do show that he was likely not totally straight.
@PoweredByRainbows3 жыл бұрын
So the sources we provided include the letters, for which you are admitting give clear evidence that Washington had same-sex relationships. I don’t mind a little debate but you’re saying we don’t have reliable sources on this and also admitting the letters prove he wasn’t perfectly straight. But the letters are a part of our sources in the Queer History of America book we reference. I’m just confused as to your question here maybe you can clarify. Thanks

@@PoweredByRainbows yeah, I don't know if I worded this the best. While you do show the info we may need, it is a very complex case, as we aren't extremely certain about the complexities and subcultures at the time. This, I should add, has just as much concrete proof as most historical facts that are considered absolute fact. This is a fairly reasonable conclusion, but since it isn't coming from a professional, or at least not someone who is engaging in the discussion as a sociologist would, I feel like the nuance may be somewhat lost on the viewer. I also didn't realize that one of your sources talked about the letters, as I had misclicked while looking at the provided sources. Sorry about the confusion.

@@PoweredByRainbows Are you a language expert of the time? I'm betting no, because these tones in letters were common place back then and now you're critiquing it by today's language standards. Like the word "gay" in the 1940's meant happy not like today's meaning of the word.

The usevof Gay is misleading in historical context. Many men expressed deeply romantic feelings for each other. And would share beds . And sleep in each other's embrace. But would not define themselves as homosexual.

Well, people are theorizing. Abraham is actually gay and I would hope it’s true because he’s kind of my idol. People found a love letter they claimed to have and they show me a link. I’m hope I’m not being gaslighted because I don’t want false hope
