The Washington Post columnist says President Joe Biden isn't a progressive but "will go where the [Democratic] party goes, and the party is being driven by other people."

----------------
"History is made by intense, compact minorities," says Washington Post columnist George Will, who believes that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) "and her squad or cohort have the energy in the Democratic Party. A lot of people say, 'Gee whiz, I did not know Joe Biden was this far left. He's not left, not a progressive, he's a Democrat. And he goes where his party is being pulled." Will says that starting in the mid-1960s, followers of Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-Ariz.) had the same effect on the Republican Party, eventually leading the recasting of the GOP as the party of small government and the election of President Ronald Reagan in 1980.
In 1973, Will was a young academic coming off a stint as a Senate staffer when he began writing columns for National Review and The Washington Post. Since then he has churned out "6,000 or so" pieces (his count) on a weekly schedule, calling to mind the longevity and endurance of Cal Ripken Jr., who played more consecutive baseball games than anyone in history and whose work ethic was lionized by Will in his 1990 bestseller, Men at Work: The Craft of Baseball.
Will's newest book is American Happiness and Discontents, a collection of columns from 2008-2020 that covers the Great Recession and the Obama years to what he calls the crybaby presidency of Donald Trump and the rise of identity politics as a major force in contemporary America. Of special interest are his columns drawing complicated lessons from the World War II era, when the country triumphed over authoritarianism and genocide abroad even as it practiced racial apartheid at home. Will's analysis of and love for America is unabashedly patriotic but it is never jingoistic or untroubled by tough historical truths.
Though he started out firmly on the conservative right, Will has become more and more libertarian, especially in his insistence that mere politics should never be the all-consuming passion of human endeavor and that America remains a place dedicated to a future that is better than the present. "If we can rein in our appetite for government to dispense benefits," he says, and replace it with a government "that defends the shores, fills the potholes, and otherwise gets out of the way, we're going to see again, the creativity of the American people."

Like if they repealed the nfa, put term limits on congress or repealed the patriot act and did not replace them with anything else I would be happy. It is the excellent vocabulary and encyclopedic command of the facts, which make the arguments worthy of consideration. The hypocrisy in the conclusions reveal Mr. Will's biases, but those biases in solutions don't change the facts or situations to be addressed. Persistent minorities need a way to meaningfully participate in the government, which is a feat not easily achieved with modern communications. @@Garry_Combine I mean he's biased and idealistic compared to the other Reason journalists. He talks about bitcoin but not the actual blockchain technology emerging making bitcoin obsolete (which by the way he never addresses the inherent problems of bitcoin as a crypto). He likes to dunk on trump and never mentions any good about him, and ironically, this reporter went the mainstream perspective of January 6's coverage. Finally, we are in this really mediocre interview that was much talk about nothing. I like stossel and that younger guy who was actually talking about blockchain technology in the other videos should be on more than the reporter in this video. I suppose it's a tradeoff of quality over quantity so I prefer that young man to not shill in this case. In any event, the reporter in this video is a filler at best. Edit: I'm now hearing that this interview has a lot of errors in them too. Much worse than I remembered now.

Donald Trump was a crybaby for pointing out that the media were all against him? Well, I WAS looking forward to hearing what Mr. Will had to say. After hearing that, it's clear he's either become stupid, or he's not paying attention. Which are arguably the same thing.

You'd be hard- pressed to challenge this man's attention.Trump's a cry baby because he won't admit he lost the election,. And what media was against him? He attacked any criticsm, calling it " fake news" and refused to hold press conferences. Open your eyes pal. He had Fox media in his pocket, right wing radio and social media, are/were reflexively devoted to him, : in fact tRump consulted with many of Fox pundits, in policy decisions.

@@8ofwands300 so you've got such severe confirmation bias that when the rest of the media's coverage of Trump was 90% negative, you believed that 90% of what he did was actually bad, and you lack the introspection and cognitive ability to realize that. Got it.

@@able34bravo37 ask yourself the same question silly man. I've got George Will agreeing with me. Let me guess - you believe that coverage of Biden has been" fair and balanced" out of Fox? How you can continue to support this man who literally tried to subvert our system of government through violent means shows extreme blind cult-like devotion and YOUR selective attention.. This (and some other recent G Will videos I've seen) are wonderful illustrations of why Michael Medved calls libertarians "loser-tarians". So in love with their intellectualism.... They can't win an election but they darn well know what Madison had to say on the issue.... Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed listening to lots of different ideas, but libertarians are like monks sitting in some high tower while the rest of the world falls into the dark ages. I've completely lost respect for Will. So devoted to his revulsion of Donald Trump that he failed to immediately jump up and condemn Mark Milley's treasonous actions! A man who conspired to thwart civilian control of the military and even called our most potent adversary on the side to assure them that he would warn them before the US launched a strike? And Mr Will seems to think that was a reasonable course of action? Sorry Jorge. I've lost respect for you.

Completely and utterly manipulated by right wing media. Milley didn’t usurp civilian control of the military and didn’t promise to tip off the Chinese before an attack. The fact you can believe such nonsense reveals volumes about your gullibility. Try reading more of the conversation. Milley was assuring the shaken Chinese that no attack was imminent and that in those types of scenarios there is ample buildup of negotiations and ultimatums.

@@wcg19891 The ChiComs were 'shaken'? That's laughable. The dirty little not-so secret is tyrannical governments have very good intelligence, know for a fact we'd never preemptively strike, would know about it even if we tried, and only the truly gullible would believe they were worried or fearful. Talk about a false moral equivalency. I don't care Milley talked to the ChiComs, but I find his conversation with Pelosi terrifying and his mismanagement of Afghanistan egregious. Yeah no, the USA didn't "give organized anti-slavery political movement" to the world. Very disappointing interview, and even more misleading title. Gillespie is usually a better interviewer and Will is usually much better at condensing points. He seems much more elitist than in the past, or his tone is more condescending. Over 12 minutes in and instead of laying out Will's case against the 1619 project, we have two pundits psycho-analyzing the electorate en masse. What a shame as I generally like both of them. At the very least, Reason should provide an honest title.
