Great video. I'm glad the crush washer and o-ring didn't fix it. So often our first (or second or third) attempt at a fix doesn't work so it is good to se someone else have to persevere and keep at it until they find the fix. That's reality. Thanks.

Cleaning the tensioner could definitely fix a rattle on cold start George. I had the same issue on a motorbike a few years ago. It was much quieter and also it was more responsive and more power. It really made that much difference, probably due to the better efficiency of the valves.

Interesting find! I’d never have suspected a rusted through tensioner. I have a 911 of a similar vintage which has a very minor leak from one of the tensioners. I’d always assumed was it just the sealing washer but I’ll check the tensioner itself too! One day…. 😅

The washers themselves are common for corroding but well worth checking the tensioner itself too!

The spring inside these type of tensioner get weak with age. You could have replaced the tensioner while you were in there. Alternatively you can add a thin washer or coin at the end of the spring to increase tension on the chain. This may cure the start up rattle. Worked for me on an E39 a few years back. You may have more than one tensioner on that particular engine. I'm not familiar with Porsche engines.

Porsche's are weird pricing parts. When I had a 993 on a 95 plate in 2000, I found that out. Beru spark plugs.. £100, I paid £30 for the exact plugs at a local motor parts shop. While a new badge for the front cost £25. Servicing was cheap as the car was 5 years old. I never paid over £200 for virtually anything on the car.

Great result with the timing tensioner George. Shame it wasn't a seal but you can't win them all and you know the tensioner won't need doing now. What's the plan for the rear window? Are you leaving the bumpers as they are with the towing straps?

I have owned several Boxsters and some rattled on start up and some didn’t. As long as it is only there for a second no problem. A lot of these cars do not get regular use and the thin oil used these days drains away from components. My tip if you want to avoid the rattle is to turn ignition key over a few times without firing up the engine. By doing this you are allowing oil to circulate prior to the stress of the engine starting.
