I've been working on exclusively German cars for 20+ years now. I would say that engine sounds pretty healthy, and the knocking to me is the injection system. Maybe some lifter tap, but overall I consider it normal to my ears. Btw a quick tip I would recommend on oil changes. I don't recommend you pull that expansion tank all the way up. The hose that runs from the tank to the turbo feed line has a plastic T that loves to break. Also, the coupling at the bottom of the tank doesn't have a guide tab. It just allows the hose to pop on. So it free spins. After some mileage, the hose will stick. As soon as you raise the expansion tank up, the stress will twist the hose, and it will want to spin. This damages the o-ring inside then it develops a slow methodical leak. Easier to remove the fresh air pipe on the turbo, and use a long extension with the 27mm. Less stuff to stress.

Remove the vacuum line to the brake booster by the pump and cover it partially with your finger, if the noise goes away it’s coming from where the vacuum pump shaft engages into the camshaft.

Ticking hydraulic lifter noise is common on BMW N52 engines after 50,000 miles or so. When hot revving engine at 3000 revs for 2 minutes can lubricate the noisy lifter and fix the noisy issue.

The engine in the R56 is prone to piston slap. Mine developed a similar noise at 31k after regular 3k oil changes. Exchanged it for a Honda Civic. No more noises.

I have 2013 63 plate R56 N16 engine, it doesn't sound anything like that, it is quite quiet at tickover, it does however use the usual 1L of oil/1000 miles.

Ditch the pattern oil filter and use a genuine item (or a Citroen item which is identical, but without BMW tax added) We had a low oil pressure warning on our Cooper several years ago, after much investigation it turned out to be nothing more that a collapsing pattern oil filter. 38000 miles later, and the engine is still sweet as a nut....

My mini makes the same rattly noise when cold too. I've always heard that it can be normal, but keep in mind the "death rattle" that can happen if your timing chain guides start to fail. I started running 0W-40 oil and it seems to help a little.

Becuse the story of your dipstick, i hope you install the timing chain correctly becuse the plastic chain cover, so i think, when you use the chain spanner instead of the dummy 0.06 d.a.n, when titening the chain the cover is not straight give noises and the dipstick is maybe not propperley fitting

Does sound like a lifter. Sometimes they just are "like" that. N14s are incredibly noisy, valvetrain wise especially. Some of it comes from the VP or HPFP. You can do a bleeder lifting procedure Procedure preconditions: Engine oil level correct whilst warm- neither underfilled nor overfilled Engine running at operating temperature 1.) Bring the engine up to an operating speed (no load) of 2000-3000 rpm and maintain this condition for three minutes (bleeding procedure). Let the engine idle for 15-30 seconds and reevaluate whether the noise is still present or not. 2.) Engine quiet - procedure is finished. 3.) Engine noise is still present - repeat the procedure; perform steps #1 and #2 up to a maximum of 5 times. 4.) Only if the noise remains after performing the bleeding procedure 5 times: proceed by performing the procedure for a final time, also at an engine operating speed of 2000-3000 rpm, but for a total time duration of 15 minutes.

Hmmm it sounds definately different compared to first startup. Maybe buy a cheap stethoscope thingie and poke it on various parts while engine is running. Would not hurt to do a compression test or leakdown test just to rule out any errors there. Good luck 👍

Exactly same noise on same engine on my Peugeot but with 120000km Normaly these sound comes from the timing chain, when the chain is loose or the chain tensioner is bad, but everything is new on this engine, so i'm little bit surprise Interessting to see if you find where it comes from Sorry if my english is bad, i'm from France ;)

@@GeorgeAustersA month ago I bought a 2011 (12?) F25 X3 30d. Once it was new! The first owner changed the oil after 33,000 km! And ever since the oil has been changed at about 30,000 km or slightly less. Now it has 246,000km. I don't think much has been done to this car during all these years. Brake pads two times, and two bushes in the rear link arms. A big question in this case is of course, how long will the engine last? Another 100-150,000 km?
