Thanks George. Just picked up a. 520d m sport. Just got to clean dpf as it hadn’t been driven for a while and adjust handbrake. That looks easy enough thanks to your video.

Ideally, Both cables should be slackened at the lever before making adjustments at the shoes. If the cable is not slack the pawl (it attaches to) may not be fully returned and you will loose leverage on the shoes and lower the efficiency of the brake. So loosen cables Adjust shoes at the wheel until binding Back off a few clicks Then adjust cable tension Also, when parking on a hill with no (or poor) handbrake it’s best not to put in reverse when facing downhill or vice versa as you suggested, because any movement of the wheels will result in turning your engine backwards, which can result in a jumped timing chain/belt. Hi I’ve got the 2005 e60 535d I have done injector rebuild egr swirl flap blank carbon cleaned manifold heater plugs and module coded out seat occupancy sensor all good apart from my handbrake going to do mine great vid mate learn a lot from these videos I’m good with tools etc but always good to see the job being done 👍

Thanks a lot. Well explained on the brake. As a suggestion: Just try putting ur wheel under the car when you work on it. U can also jack the car on the rear diff, it’s an official jacking point and then put the jacks on the side jacking points. Also less pressure in the control arm joints. 😉

There’s a lock mechanism in beside the handbrake lever,before adjusting the handbrake you should lock it in place.its in my E92.i believe it’s in this model also.

The parking brake shoes should never wear down as they do not come into contact with the revolving discs. The wear problem is caused by mechanics over tightening the handbrake cables thus causing the shoes to come into contact with the revolving discs and so wearing down. From someone with fifty five years experience working on BMW’s.

Service manual for E53 X5 says - sometimes use half force of handbrake to stop the car, so any rust on the inside of the rotor will be gone :)

Keep your legs out from under the car!!!!!! Leave the wheels on so you can use them as leverage to turn the rotors. Lastly, there is a release spring under the ebrake handle which is visible once you remove the ebrake handle boot. Push the release spring in till it locks prior to doing the adjustment. Parking on a hill you turn your wheels into the curb so they take the weight and the car will not go anywhere if the cable fails.

Ok bro so my bmw e60 525d faild mot coz hand brake got told i beed handbrake cables coz coz its fully max is that how you tighten it back up coz bro if so that looks soo easy but i can litarally lift up my handbrake and car be still going??

I did my discs pads and hand brake shoes last year. Shoes are a bugger to fit! And in the e61 the adjuster seems to be at a slightly different angle. I had also read that you should reverse and while moving backwards slowly apply the hand brake! Apparently it works the adjuster in the lever mechanism. Dunno how true this is. Can anyone shed any light on it maybe. Keep up the good work 👍

Any reason why you replaced the shoes? Surely the shoes shouldn’t really wear only being used for the handbrake? Cheers mate👍🏻

@@GeorgeAusters hand brake was rubbish. And I thought while the discs were off. Why not. I would never have to worry about it again. And it's a good brake now. So was worth it.

Can you help me with some advice, please? I've got an e 60 525d automatic, from few months ago started to vibrate the hole car very badly, steering wheel, dash board, seats ,everything, specially between 60-80 miles I've changed a lot of parts and still can't find the problem, the mechanic doesn't know what else could be. So I've changed the flex disc and the bearing on the propshaft, engine and gearbox mounts , new tyres balanced twice , everything what means suspension on the front wheels(arms ,bushes, anti roll bars) , new disc brakes, everything is fine . Doesn't have any knoks or bangs. The car is vibrating a little bit even when I'm stoped ,and when I'm stopped I feel vibration on the steering wheel . What I didn't changed are the all 4 shock absorbers ,wich I know are gone ,but the mechanic says that is not from shock absorbers. Some mechanics are saying that could be from the gearbox oil ,I don't know what to do. I did a diagnosis with the scanner and it's showing just 3 glow plugs fault, but the engine is fine, the rpm is perfect engine has power, starts perfect. I spent a lot of money and didn't solve the vibration. Any advice ? Many thanks

I have e61 and regulation is in different place...left side about 3 o'clock,right side about 9 o'clock...exactly in centrum break caliper

Hi George, also watched your 1 series shoe assembly replacement vid. In that one you pinned back the spring underneath the handbrake itself. Is that not necessary on the E60/61?

George I have an e60 when I open the back passenger door water floods out, I'm told I need to reseal the behind the door panel, have you ever fixed this issue . could you do a video to show you e60 fans

No water in the car, when I open the door water drips from the bottom of the door didn't notice the exact spot it was dripping from . I need to look next time I open the door and stop running away from the problem :-)

@@wardex5326 I had a clog sunroof drain that was flooding my back seat/floors and filling my back right door with water. Had to unplug the rubber cap to drain it and wet vac the water out under the carpet. I have a '04 525i

Is there suppose to be a slight binding or contact with the inner disc with the shoe brake? I like to have zero rolling resistance. E.g. slight incline test, the car should stop as it levels out on its own and not jolt slightly from shoe pad contact on the inner disc.

In my opinion you don’t really want any contact as you’re just gonna be wearing your shoes. Should hold on a hill with 5 clicks👍🏻

If there’s any contact when the handbrake is off then when you drive the shoes and drum rub together which causes them to get hot and expand. This creates a runaway feedback loop which can cause your handbrake to seize on whilst you’re driving. They must rotate freely with the handbrake off.

How to do it on automatic? When i stop the engine The transmission goes to P mode automaticly

That’s the transmission park, not the parking brake

@@90umit if u have facelift, just put fingers under then flexible plate around gearselelctor and pull up. entire bracket will come out. the remove a little platic thing in front of the lever, and stick a small screwdriver down. pull the screwdriver towards u until it clicks in place, trans is now in neutral

Sucks so bad. Last night I spent 2 hours, 2 bloody hours trying to adjust this piece of poo. And still I cannot for the love of me find the adjustment cog !!!!!!! I don't know wtf is going on its like my e60 has no adjustment cog. !

To be honest, I actually prefer this to a handbrake caliper setup.. They can be annoying when it comes to replacing pads
