The way you explain stuff, demonstrate the tools with a plain background, and walk through the process are direct and very plain to understand. Thanks for the reply back. I started building wood gasifiers near the end of last winter so that put me onto the path of welding. The wire welder took some getting used to and I'm still learning to use it properly but I'm getting there. I'm building a cooling radiator using thin pipe so I needed to braze instead of using the wire welder. I looked at a lot of people explaining the basics of gas welding and you by far made it simple to grasp. Once again, thank you George.

So many instructors get way too technical but your manner really breaks it down good! Glad that you like the videos. It does seem that all the welding equipment, Mig, Tig, Oxy/Ace are good for specific jobs. Like what you did with the wheel rim. Very clever!

Once again I wanted to tell you thank you. I did some test brazing tonight with brass rod and it came out good the first time. It had been 40 years since I have even touched a oxy acetylene torch and with a few of the projects I have on my "to do" list, the mig welder was not suited for the job.

I'd suggest getting a pair. They are not expensive. Just consider them insurance. I've never had a flash back but obviously some people have which is why someone came up with flash back arrestors. Having them is probably "better safe than sorry". Glad that you like the videos. George

I am sure that your grandpa would be pleased to know that you are using his torch outfit. Words, photos and videos are great, but there is nothing better than practice.

George, Thank you for your instructional videos. I've found them to be priceless. Can you speak to the use of check valves and flashback arrestors please. I'm not sure if they are required , safer, both needed and where they go exactly. I've a call into my weld shop for tips too but I thought your experience would be best here. Thank you

Great Videos. I'm new to Brazing so bear with me - your videos are helpful with what I want to do. My question is your thoughts on using OEM Tips/Nozzles for a ESAB torch or are aftermarket ones okay? OEM ones are very expensive compared to other companies. (2-3x the price). Thanks

Rob, ESAB makes really good equipment. None of my regular suppliers had ESAB Oxygen Acetylene equipment. I'd suggest buying one off brand tip and see how you like it. I have some tips that are off brand that have worked well. And then there are some that were a disappointment. Keep in mind, with reasonable care a tip will last a long time. I have some I've been using for 40 years.

Would it be better to remove tip for cleaning so those gobs of slag are given a chance to fall out rather than just be pushed back to later plug the hole again by the exiting gas pressure

That's a good question. Definitely would be easier for getting the tip cleaner pin into the tip. I've never actually seen anything fall out of the tip. Once I clean the tip I open the oxygen valve hoping that it will blow any residue out. Sometimes I've had to use the tip cleaner two or three times. In the end, it's a matter of whatever it takes to get a good clean flame. Thanks for the question.

Does tip size have any affect on puddle size, and the puddles ability to hold heat when a 3/32 rod is dabbed into the leading edge of the puddle... I'm having a hard time maintaining the puddle and fwd. progress seem about 1/2 compared to other video posts...so troubleshooting...tip size?, (running 4 lbs/4lbs.O vVctor #0 tip on .125"x 1.25" angle iron, Victor chart says #2...makes that much difference?)

I set my regulators at 5# acetylene and 6# oxygen. I would use a "0" or #1 tip. Once you are really comfortable with what you are doing then you might move up to a #2 tip. Using a smaller tip slows the process down so that I can concentrate on the weld. You might also try 1/16" gas rod rather than the 3/32. Let me know if this helps. George

+George Goehl Thanks, I am somewhat scared of OA welding, and I don't have any working equipment yet, only my fathers old torch kit. Can't afford cylinders and such yet, might as well spend the time researching as much as I can.

1873Winchester Once you learn the basics of brazing and welding it is a matter of applying your skill to whatever you are doing. Someone welding and brazing bike frames will adjust their techniques to job at hand. Someone in structural welding will have completely different techniques. It all boils down to learning the basics and adapting your skills to whatever you are doing.
