In this video I wanted to take a look at the DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor and how it's become a big part of my new editing workflow. This isn't an in-depth tutorial about how it works. It's more of a real world review after spending a few weeks using it.

I bought the Speed Editor solely for the Studio Key, but use it everyday now in both the Cut and Edit pages. Not sure if others have commented on the CAM keys, in the CUT page they allow you to select your Video Track in relation to your Cam number. Great if you are working on one video track and then want to move to another video track fast. Thanks for your honest opinion, hopefully Blackmagicl can give us a firmware update to customise the keys. It would be so useful..Hint Hint!

The push down on the jog/shuttle wheel was on tape deck the switch between jog and shuttle. Wish they could implement that function then. As a person who started on tape deck editing. This is a great panel. So if I start editing again, I’ll sure pick this up or the other panels.

@@georgekamenov_ I don't know if this is covered, but the multicam buttons do help in selecting different tracks. When I add a new track above another, it is assigned to the next higher number. Track 1 is Cam 1, track 2 is Cam 2, and so on. For that, I use it all the time!

Excellent review, thank you. I only use the editing timeline function in Da Vinci. To mark in and out I use B (for blade) than A and drag an drop the clip to a second timeline below the main one. These are 4 functions which is a problem when you in/out many clips for a closer selection. Do you think the speed editor could do this particular function. If yes, I'de love to buy one just for that feature in order to save time - thank you for your answer!

I bought my Speed Editor about 2 years ago and had never any thoughts of regret. But its a pity that Blackmagic while working on the functionality didn't offer a solution yet for the 90 (or more) % of the users who don't need all these multicam keys.

I had to add a second comment about Multi-Cam since I do a lot of work with multiple cameras showing demonstrations. So I get one chance to get all the footage from multiple angles. I even figured out how to do multi-Cam using the Blackmagic camera app on a combination of iPhones and iPads. I know that a lot of people don’t need it, but if you do then it’s worth it for how much it can do. 😊😊

Do you think your new method of using the Source Tape on the Cut page would work well without the Speed Editor? If you didn't have the Speed Editor would you continue using this method on the Cut Page, or would you go back to using only the Edit Page?
@georgekamenov_
@georgekamenov_ 7 ай бұрын
To be totally honest, if I had to use it without the speed editor I probably wouldn't. Like I said in the video, I've tried using the cut page with my normal keyboard and mouse setup but I always felt like it was clunky and uncomfortable for me personally. So if I wasn't using the speed editor, I'd probably just go back to my standard workflow in the edit tab.

I use only one camera. My first thought when I saw the Speed Editor was what a waste of 9 keys on cameras. Still, I use the Cut Page far more than the Edit Page and the Speed Editor looks as though it saves masses of time compared to a mouse and keyboard. Pretty inexpensive too, considering that you get a Study licence bundled with it.

I just bought speed editor, a week ago. Totally agree with you. The multicam buttons are on my least priority. Wish they could have custom keys. Yeah, pretty much agree with all of that. It's a great piece of hardware and I hope they're able to adjust some of the features with software updates down the line. If they ever give us the option to rebind multicam keys to anything else it's gonna be a game changer for sure!

I got the Speed Editor when they first came out and got the Studio License for free or is it vice a versa? I learned Resolve using the Cut page more than the Edit page like most people. But this paid dividends in the long run and paid off in spades when Resolve for the iPad was released I love using the Speed Editor and it saves me so much time. I have a wedding from the weekend to go through tomorrow and the Speed Editor will chomp through it easily. This is a indispensable tool for me.

Great overview. I am still looking at this, or something like it, but I don't like those camera buttons. There are too many buttons, too far away from the jog shuttle. I have two hands and with a simple jog shuttle on the right side and a Stream Deck on the left, I get a lot of options without having to move stuff around. With the speed editor on the right, the jog shuttle might be to far to the right to reach and the keys are too far from my right hand to use without looking at them. I do like that these are mechanical keys where the clicky feeling is linked to the actual contact. On those Stream Deck these are not linked, meaning that feeling the click does not result in the action; I actually have to push the key further down to make sure the key-press is registered and results in the proper action
@georgekamenov_
@georgekamenov_ 4 ай бұрын
Yeah, there are definitely a few things you need to think about in terms of the ergonomics. If you don't plan to use the multicam keys it is tough to use it with just one hand but I personally always bring it right in front of me when I'm using it to cut stuff and then I move it to the side when I'm done and need to use my main keyboard for other things.

@@georgekamenov_ I think I'll wait for one of those "free with a Studio license key" offers. Meaanwhile I'll go DIY style. Long time ago I built a jog wheel that converts jog motion into cursor keys.
