Would it surprise you to know there's quite a few of this genre of film from around 1892 to around 1905? It was a big thing at the time and there was a general interest in fairy stories and myths at the time, as well. Many directors did it. Georges is one of the best, and definitely the most well known.

Fantastique!

Pure magic- an absolute delight! Méliès' settings are stunning, the effects are superb, and the hand-coloring is amazing and gives the film a whole extra layer of fantasy. I enjoyed these 17 minutes more than today's technically flawless but overblown three-hour mind-numbing insomnia cures. The human inventiveness of this 121-year -old confection impresses me more than 300 million dollars worth of technology. But hey, that's me all over! Great to see this!

It's a shame that a masterpiece such as.this would be given such ridiculous music. Georges Méliès's films were very mucn inspired by the Grand ballet and operas of the mid-to-late 19th century, partiicularly this one, and to have THIS nonsense music is very disappointing .

The backgrounds are beautiful and detailed but to a fault. They make it difficult to make out what's going on. It would be even more difficult if it wasn't colored. I didn't understand much of the plot to be honest but I really liked the aesthetic of it all. It isn't the first Melies film I've watched.
