I shaved with my Envoy this morning. Mine arrived last weekend. It’s amazingly smooth and efficient. Blade was a Derby and I still got some irritation. Love how smooth the razor is, though there may be too much blade exposure for it to be a daily shaver for me. Put on some Proraso preshave after the shave, and the skin is cooling down. I do have very sensitive skin.

Andrew, how many passes did you do? If you did three, next time do only two. Also, even if you do feel a bit of stubble after that second or third pass, don't continue to shave it down. that little bit will, once it throws off excess moisture after the shave, retract a bit and become flush with the skin.

I have to say at half the price of my timeless, it’s better than my Timeless. Smoother than my timeless. If they made an envoy mild version it would end up being my only razor.

Incredible shave Mark! The Envoy is a premium razor inspired by the old Gibbs razors, If I recall Matt said the Envoy is equivalent to setting 3 on the Rex, also the hole at the bottom is also there for air ventilation to help with drying the inside. I wish the Envoy was a 2-peice. And I almost forgot to mention, I actually just bought a brand new Merkur 34C off eBay for $18 shipped. I definitely was not in the market for this razor but since I’ve been traditional wetshaving for over three years and never tried one of the most popular razors I figure id add it to my Shave Den. Going to shave with it tonight. And if it’s too mild I’m just gonna loosen it a quarter turn. I have never tried the Envoy, but of my 3 top razors, the Ambassador, the Karve, and the Twig, I really enjoy the Ambassador. If the Envoy is anything like that razor, you're in for a treat, should be a fantastic razor. From my personal experience, Astra greens work well in the Ambassador and I think they'll do a fair job in the Envoy. Hope you enjoy your shaves with the Envoy and any blades you happen to use as well as fantastic shave soaps.

I purchased the Rex Ambassador last year. It is definitely my best-quality and best-looking safety razor. While it was a bit pricey, I was happy to buy a razor made in the USA. From what I've read the Envoy and Ambassador have similar shaving heads. The Envoy is described to be in the mid-range (setting 3) of the Ambassador. But I have found the Ambassador to be on the aggressive side even at the lowest setting. I rarely shave at a setting higher than 1.5 out of 6. That aggressiveness is my biggest disappointment. My Rockwell 6C gives me a much smoother shave even using plate 4. Once again your review proves that YMMV comes into play. I'm pleased that you are so happy with the Envoy. This review inspired me to pull out the Ambassador to see if I can get as good a shave as you did with the Envoy..

Baet, I've found that platinum, chromium, Teflon, etc. coated blades really help to smooth out my shaves in razors that are on the ore aggressive end of the spectrum. Perhaps give an Astra or Shark Super Chrome a try in the Ambassador if you haven't already.

But other reviewers (Kevy Shaves and Friendship Shaving) have commented about the Ambassador being on the aggressive side ...even at the low settings.

@@MarkSzorady It is an incredible razor! It can be mild onnlow settings and aggressive on the higher ones. There is a poor man's version of this called the Pearl Flexi adjustable. If you contemplate this one, make sure you purchase version 2. The first one had blade gap issues. I just purchased the Yaqi adjustable. Kevy Shaves just did a review. It has a numerical error which in time may make it valuable!

@@JimG7755 bro I bought Ken Surfs Pearl Flexi 2.0 (V2) off him and it still has proublems. It doesn’t affect the shave for me personally but you can tell the balance of the adjuster tray is off on settings 4.5 and up. The Pearl and Rex ambassador both copy off the Gibbs so I wouldn’t talk smack on the Pearl just cause it’s WAYYY more affordable

Robert, if you're shaving at level 6, then the Envoy razor will be milder. I very rarely shave at level 6 with any of my Vikings Blade adjustable razors. Level 5 or 5.5 is about max for me. So, the Envoy, while wonderfully efficient, is milder for me. Certainly milder than level 6 on the Meiji or other VB adjustable razors. How much milder? Maybe a notch and half or two (best guess). Obviously, YMMV. Also, generally speaking, your point of refence, depending on beard and skin, will most likely be different than mine. EDIT - as far as smoothness goes, both razors are smooth, but the Meiji has that little extra component in being adjustable that really sets it apart. So, difficult to compare side by side because they are not comparable...one is a 3-piece safety razor, the other is an adjustable. Big advantage in being adjustable. However, you've inspired and reminded me to pull out one of my Vikings Blade adjustable razors for my next shave! then, the next day, I'll use the Envoy.:)

Robert, both brushes have wonderful knots. I'd imagine they are every bit as good as a top-flight badger hair brush. At least, I've read comments to this effect from badger brush users. I think it comes down to the handle. The Peregrino is a wonderful brush. However, some might prefer the handle on the Amber Aerolite. The Amber Aerolite has a robust, chunky, squared-off feel. Whereas, the Peregrino's handle has a more rounded-off feel to it. The Peregrino's handle is a bit larger, but not by much. HTH.:)

Hey Mark I got the Rex Ambassador and I'm getting inconsistent shaves. Supposedly the Envoy is equivalent to a 3 on the Rex but I never go really past 2.5. I think my shave angle is off particularly with this razor. I've watched a lot of your videos and you ahear to 30 degrees and let the razor to the work. How do you obtain that angle, is it 30 degrees perpendicular? Do you start with the top cap flat on the face lower the handle 30 degrees downward?

Hi, Gotobecrazy. The 30 degree angle is a general approach and rule I follow. But, for me, it's on the mark a good deal of the time. I tend to find the angle quite easily on the first swath of lather I shave. There may be a bit of adjustment of that angle depending on how large or small the blade gap of the razor is. But I've found that it's really not far off that 30 degree mark. I can say that, when using my various adjustable razors (Vikings Blade, Parker, Gillette, etc.), I do modify the angle of approach just a bit as the blade gap is opened or closed, but not glaringly so. It's still in that 30 degree ballpark. Yes, you can hold the cap flat to your cheek with the handle horizontal and then slowly rotate downward until you feel the blade edge. However, remember that you'll be constantly shifting/adjusting the razor head angle to accommodate the contours of your face during the shave. It seems that my personal experience has been this...the more I did the traditional wet shave and became familiar with the various razors in my collection, the more the angle and movement became automatic and natural. This came about over time by simply doing and enjoying the wet shave.:) I can't speak to the Rex Ambassador as I don't have one. So I can't say whether or not the 3 rating on the Ambassador is equivalent to the Envoy. However, the Rex Envoy is a razor I can use every day. In fact, I have used it on a daily basis.

There's alot of different opinions and conflicting info out there with regard to finding that propershave angle. I know 30 degrees is the benchmark and depends of the razor. Some other youtubers start with the guard flat on the face and raise the handle slightly up to get that angle. Which I've done for the past 2 years but I don't think is ideal, you can easily get to a angle where your scraping instead of cutting.

I have some of the most popular razors de89, Merkurs, rockwell6s, Fatips, razorock, Parker Varient, Henson Al razor, Battle Brothers Blackhawk Al razor and like 15 vintage razors. For the most part no problem. It's the Rex that's been Hard to get a consistent shave. I also feel the shave is rather harsh with it's blade exposure, the razor drags on the skin as some other people have mentioned in their review. It may be too much pressure without realizing it, the Rex is fairly hefty.

Perer, Yes, it is R1. Even with that little drop-in clip, the lettering is small to the extent it didn't register as well as I would have liked. Next time, a still photo will certainly give better detail.

Is that smooth as de89? I want a razor like no blade feeling on my face while maximum of efficiency? Like 6c setting 2 or 3 ?

Id say it's very smooth and the efficiency is half a click or so above a DE89. The blade feel, for me, is determined by the blade. Coated blades (platinum, chrome, teflon, etc) in this razor are smooth, SS blades have more feel, a bit more growl, so to speak.

Can you use other handles with the head?

I tend to shy away from swapping razor heads and handles. Having said this, the counter-bore on the base plate is machined specifically to marry to the handle. However, to satisfy curiosity, I just checked with a couple of handles and one appears to fit, while the other does not. Yes, it appears to have a standard threaded stud, but I did not tighten to snug. So, it'll pretty much depend on the outer diameter of the handle in question. For me, The Envoy is the complete package. I've never felt it needed another handle. :) If Rex Supply were to offer a longer handle, specifically machined to the specs of the razor head and base plate, I would definitely opt to but that one. :)

@@MarkSzorady Happy Thanksgiving! I am from Eastern Europe and no such holiday here. Vikings blade? Is that made in Israel? I have never used this blade. I recently ordered a sample pack of blades mostly consisting of ones made in Israel. The only blade made in Israel I have tried so far is Personna platinum chrome which is very good but only for 3 uses. I am considering buying a stainless steel razor so I will probably go for this Rex razor. Thank you for taking the time to reply to comments, it makes a really good impression. Not all KZbinrs do it. And I like the way you explain things, namely in a very orderly manner. Do you work in academia by any chance?:) Cheers!

Should I get Rockwell 6S or Rex Envoy?

Raymond, the Rockwell gives you more options for finding the right level of aggression and efficiency for you shave. The Envoy, IMHO, is very precisely machined. You can't go wrong with the Rockwell due to the number of plates included. However, the Envoy has a better build and finish. The Envoy is CNC machined whereas the Rockwell is manufactured using a process MIM (Metal Injection Molding). The Rockwell gives you more options for finding the right shave for your skin and beard type. Some may prefer the CNC machined approach to the Envoy which gives it a better finish and build.

@@MarkSzorady I am using Rockwell 6C currently, my first razor. I want to upgrade to stainless steel razor, I do agree that Envoy has better finishing. Do you think 6S don't glide as smoothly as Envoy due to its matte bead blasted surface?

@@raymondfoo9045 I understand. It's a matter of personal preference. I've read comments from some wet shavers who have both the 6C and 6S, say that the Chromed version of the Rockwell glides better. Others see no difference, etc. I'd say the same would apply to the Envoy and the 6S. However, the Envoy offers some very nice glide due to it being CNC machined, IMHO.:) Is it better than a plated razor head? Again, it's subjective.

@@MarkSzorady Well, since I have the 6C, the 6S would be very similar if not the same to the 6C. If I would like to try something different, it would definitely be the Rex Envoy right? Another one I am eyeing is Stirling Soap Company's Stainless Razor, that is mirror finish. Hopefully you will review it.

Peter, I looked at perhaps getting a used Envoy at first. I then decided to go with a new one. In retrospect, I'm glad I went with a new one. Nothing against any of the sellers, etc. Given the additional dollars, it just was better fit for me.:)

@@MarkSzorady it works great!!! I actually was very impressed. Only thing is, it still has the blade tray balance issues... it doesn’t affect the shave though because it’s only very little... on my particular one you can start to tell on setting 4.5 and up. I shaved with it on its highest setting (6) among testing out the different numbers and even on six I couldn’t tell... still wish they had gotten it right... it’s reallllllly heavy too. The heaviest razor I own. Bought it off KenSurfs. He was nice enough to sell it to me. Man I’ve had my eye on Matts razors for a long time I just might have to get the Envoy down the road!!! Or maby the ambassador if I find one for a good price used! ~ Mike 🌹

@@magnoliamike I've gotten a few of my razors used. I luckily got them from folks who only used them once or twice, then decided to sell...so they're pretty much like new:)
