I prefer these quieter, more analytical based videos. I'd like to see more of these One point of clarification: Jacob Eason was drafted in the fourth round, not the second round. I do agree with many of the points you're making. According to 247 we have the most talented roster in the country and the fact that we have a walk-on QB speaks to poor development at that position and roster management. There's no way that Georgia would accept a walk-on linebacker starting, why should we accept a walk-on starting at the most important position on the field?

As a Auburn fan, I feel the pain. It's my observation that when Kirby start at UGA, he tried to copy the Alabama system that worked successful for years with just run first, game managing QB's, but none to prolific. Saban made the change for a reason.

Although I liked Fromm better than most UGA fans I will agree he fumbled the ball on the Fields/Fromm situation. I never was an Eason fan so I think Fromm was better than Eason in UGAs situation. But short answer yes Kirby hasn’t handled the QB situation the best if you look at Fields and Trevor Lawrence he had both in the palm of his hand and I will say both those QBs are better than Fromm

Can't really answer the who's fault question without truly knowing why Newman opted out. In 2017 and 2019 I think we made the best decision with what we had. The biggest mistake came in 2018 when we didn't give Fields a chance to shine. But, in 2018, Fromm really only had one game where he played poorly and the offense was scoring well. Hell, we came super close to beating 2018 Alabama who was hyped to be the greatest team ever at the time. The problem was Fromm had too much of a pedigree in 2018 for Kirby to consider benching him, and after his performance in the SECCG Fields realized that he probably wasn't going to win the job. However I think that had he stuck around he would have started in 2019, because Fromm was an entirely different QB when it was on him to make throws, instead of it being on the WR to make catches. The rest is history. Fast forward to now. All off season we've been excited about a new QB with running ability, a new OC, etc, and 2 weeks before the start of the season, Newman opts out. Daniels is still in the final recovery from an injury, and so Mathis starts. And unlike Fromm, Mathis experiences what many new SEC QBs face and has jitters. Bennett goes in because he got all the #2 reps last year, he's been healthy the whole time, and he knows the system. I think overall we need to pump the brakes on the blame game, because a lot of these events aren't necessarily the fault of any one person. However, who we start this week, and how they perform is very, very important. I was happy to see changes to our offensive scheme at halftime against Arkansas, but we need to score early and often if we're going to compete for the title again.
@Harelston
@Harelston 4 жыл бұрын
It is hard to find a reasoned take on this topic, Kudos for a very reasoned and common sense take. The whole "who is to blame thing" is not the best approach to finding solutions about Georgia's quarterback position. Sometimes things have to fall a little lucky to get the championship type season. All you have to do is look at LSU right now. Look at them before and after Brady and Burrow. LSU has a transfer quarterback come in and solidify a shaky position Then a year later a coach came in with total new scheme concepts and it became an unbeatable formula last year. Orgeron made a couple key decisions and he will forever be celebrated for it. Kirby has in reality has had ONE quarterback with elite skills. When this quarterback was here he had no "brilliant mind" coach to provide him with a game changing system. Consequently when his playing opportunities presented themselves all we ever saw from him in limited chances was raw abilities and potential. For those who say well that is Kirby's fault that he didn't hire a "brilliant mind" coach let me offer one simple defense on Kirby's behalf. If there were that many easily found "brilliant" difference maker coaches... then Orgeron would not have started this season 0 and 1. Coaches like that are not easily located. And if you do find him he may not be available to hire. I would be willing to be harder on Kirby if he were a long time head coach in college football. Kirby has not been perfect true enough but he is not been at all lucky at the same time either. One thing all Bulldog fans should be glad about is that he is willing to change and even accept a different offensive philosophy than what he was most comfortable with. I don't share much of Lou's take because most of the comparisons are apples to oranges. I watched some Washington games and Eason was not significantly better there . He was drafted higher based on prototype measurables and not production or team success. Eason's college career was nothing special . Too much emphasis is placed on recruiting rankings in Lou's assessment of what Georgia has had available at quarterback. Kirby has a few seasons under his belt now. If you want to be fair give him that he has managed to at least have respectable quarterback play that would have won a championship... but for two defensive players that went totally brain dead at the worst possible time.
@RogerThat902
@RogerThat902 4 жыл бұрын
Disagree. There was no reason to just insert Fields over Fromm until Fromm/offense played poorly. That game came vs. LSU when Fromm looked like Mathis did this past week. I'd say worse even. Fromm didn't have a million penalties negating all his good plays. And Mathis didn't miss multiple TDs w/ poor throws. THAT was the game to put Fields in if he had any shot of winning the job. When the whole world could see Fromm melting down and Kirby doesn't at least go "Let me just see what my 5star backup can do" that was the sign to everyone and most importantly Fields that it wasn't a winnable job. Fromm defenders who have egg on their face now that they see how good Fields is say "trust us, Fields would have started in 2019 if he just waited" are basing that on nothing. We all saw Fromm play poorly and yet no Fields. Even before the LSU game Fields came in and provided a spark that got the offense going because of the zone read threat. Kirby put his affection for Fromm above the team (rumor is Fromm's parents complained to Kirby about what they were doing w/ Fields). Kirby blew it. If this team has Justin Fields right now we are the number 1 team in the nation and it's not close.

Stetson Bennett was better than okay. He was tied with Kyle Trask for 5th in the nation in QB rating by pro football focus last week. Your biggest complaint about Jake Fromm was he couldn't win a game with his arm when Georgia couldn't run the ball and he couldn't run. Georgia's running game was shutdown and Stetson came into the game and performed great with his arm and legs. Georgia outscored Arkansas 32-3 with him in the game.

As a BAMA fan, let me say this.... We LOVE Kirby. And miss him. He's one of a VERY SMALL group that still receives a lot of love, when he steps foot into T-Town. Coaches departed, that is(Lane is yet to be seen). Never the less, he COULD NOT STOP mobile QBs. Doubt me? Look at who plagued(beat) us under Kirby? Tebow. Manziel. Kelly. Cam. Etc. This is what it takes to beat Bama. You must be multi-dimensional. Able to extend plays in/out of the pocket. And above all, we have to be forced to respect the deep ball. You ain't gotta hit them all.... But we have to at least believe you can do it! Why does any of this matter? Well, based on the ongoing problems under center? I'd say it matters. And I'm simply drawing the correlation that Kirby wasn't ever great at locking in on QBs. On EITHER side of things. Saban, being the HC, of course was the one who wore that crown(trouble w/dual threat QBs). However, it hasn't been an issue since Kirby's departure. Sure, we haven't seen many Manziel(s) or Cam(s) since, but we have indeed seen traces of them. All were SHUT DOWN! And let's be realistic, it hasn't been from stellar defense, either. Bama has definitely taken a hit in our overall defensive standing since Smart left. No doubt!!! Basically, my point? I think he struggles when dissecting QBs. Both pinpointing their shortcomings and finding their strengths. Thus, making it very hard to find the one single most important quality in your P1 guy.... Leadership!!! After Bama's back to back halftime QB change up? And Georgia didn't prance Fields onto that.... Well, field? I think it caused a rift. Both in the huddle and the locker room. I hate to say it, but as an across the conference fan? There seems to be some piss poor QB decisions going down in Athens. And I get it, w/the new transfer rules? It's NOT easy having options. Hell, Bama will lose another shortly. We will. Maybe Bryce, but doubtful. We lost Talia! Happens, I get it. At this point, whatever Kirby thinks is the right answer? I may go the opposite. We all LOVED Jalen, but was still the right decision. I'm sure Dabo loved Bryant, but again.... The right decision. I'm not sure I can co-sign on Kirb's QB calls! Just my two cents. Hope everyone is well in the @UncleLou household. Be safe. W -

It's Smart fault only because he picked the offensive coordinator. This often happens with defensive minded coaches. Muschamp had elite defenses in Florida but he couldn't field a competent offense. For years Saban mainly won with defense until they hired innovative offensive minds. The same was true with LSU. I don't think Smart is intentionally sabotaging the offense any more than Muschamp, Saban or Miles. However, when you get in the middle of a close game you tend to play to your strengths and at UGA that means playing to your defense. Clearly Smart picked the wrong QB between Eason, Fromm and Fields. You live and learn. If he had a do over Fromm's butt would be on the bench the day Fields stepped on campus. Smart still has some growing pains to go through as a HC, but he's on the fast track to being elite. Dabo (an offensive coach )didn't become "Dabo" until he found Brent Venables. Dawgs just need to find the offensive version of Venables. These are first world problems though. I won't shed one tear for the Dawgs. Go Gamecocks!

First off Lou, love the content keep it up. I will agree with you Kirby fumbled the Fromm/Fields situation. But Jake Fromm and Dwan Mathis should not be looked at as elite prospects. Fromm was a 5 star in some places, might even have been Rivals. And Martell never got the chance to play because they went from Heisman finalist to Heisman finalist with Fields. All we know is Ohio State thought Justin Fields was better than Tate Martell and they made the swap. Btw, Fields > Martell is how the rankings had them so all we can say is Ohio State had the chance to upgrade their 5 star and did it. If anything that should send chills up every UGA fan's spine. Ohio State was so convinced Fields was a star they chose trade in a 5 star and UGA current starting QB for him. Isn't that the biggest indictment of Kirby's QB decisions there is?

Offensively, I think he’s created a lot of square peg round hole scenarios, especially at the skill positions. As noted, Eason and Fields got better once they left, on the flip side.... DRob got way worse once he got to UGA. When Kirby took the job, he said he would not shoehorn talent into a specific offense but that’s in fact exactly what he’s tried to do

You bring up good points, Lou. I share your frustration with the lack of qb competition for fields, eason, vs fromm. It's easy to panic from that 1st half, but it's too early to panic. Kirby has only had 1 qb that he committed too. He made the wrong choice between fromm, eason and fields. Hopefully he makes the right choice this time. Ihdk which is the right choice. I think we'll have our answer in a month. Let's stay calm and trust the process for 3 more games. If we look like shit, I'll bring torches and pitchforks to your live cast for us

Similar to finding the issue with a pro sports team, where if it's not the player, it's the coach, if it's not the coach, it's the GM, if it's not the GM, it's the owner(s). Same applies here in solving the QB situation. If it's not the player (proven that it's not because former players have gone on to play well at QB like you pointed out), it's the position coach (also proven that that's not the consistency because UGA is still having that issue), if it's not the position coach, it's the head coach. That's where we're at right now. How do we get a micro-manager to not micro-manage? That's Kirby's specific problem. He won't let the QB free to flourish and grow. Look at the musical chairs fiasco with Fields in 2018 for proof.

Kirby’s philosophy is for the defense to win him games. The offense’s job, kinda like you said, is “not to mess up” and manage the game. Basically what Saban’s offenses were before the Tua revolution: incredible efficient run game and a QB who was “good enough” and didn’t make mistakes. McElroy, McCarron, Coker, and even Hurts never had impressive numbers at alabama but they didn’t make mistakes and managed the game. Fields and Eason did better in other offenses because, well, they were allowed to. Kirby doesn’t want someone flashy or a QB who “can win you games” because he believes that’s the responsibility of the Defense. Also (as a lifelong florida fan) the situation w the transfers does remind me of some of our horror shows pre-Mullen who lit it up as soon as they left. Driskel and Brissett were both QBs under a muschamp offense and were almost unwatchable. Then they leave that scheme and boom they put up amazing numbers somewhere else and they’ve both started games in the NFL. So I don’t think it’s that these Georgia quarterbacks have been coached or developed poorly. The problem is Kirby’s philosophy and winning formula. I bet if you had put Joe Burrow in Jake fromms spot last year in the UGA team, their numbers would’ve been pretty similar, certainly a far cry from his numbers in a system that plays to his strengths and prioritizes QB play. I will admit I am a bit surprised that too QB recruits still look favorably on UGA under Kirby. Obv athens is a fun place and you’re gonna win a good amount of games at UGA, and in the case of vandagriff he’s a dawg fan who will be basically playing in his backyard. But at some point qb recruits are gonna shy away just like they did from Florida up until very recently

Excellent analysis from a fair, homer fan. Fields is the answer. Kirby does'nt think like a quarterback. Ryan Day does. As a former qb himself, he knows what it takes for a qb to succeed. Day wants Ohio State to be an elite quarterback destination with a development reputation. Kirby's achilles heel will always be the qb. Because of its awesome talent, UGA will always win games. More problematic, though, will be future recruiting. Day knows the mental and phyical assets he needs for that position. It's not just the stars rating. Kirby, for now, gets the stars, but isn't as astute at the position as they are when he uses them on the field.

Just look at Todd Monkens past at Oklahoma State, and the Buccaneers all first or top 5 in PPG, YPG, etc. Monken's past speaks for himself let him do his thing we hired him for a reason and I hope Kirby knows that, this video needs more recognition. Georgia has all the talent in the world and we can put it all together the one piece we have been missing for a while is a QB who fits our offense and is well-coached throughout the year.

The offensive coordinator and offensive play callers just ain’t cutting it for the amount of talent UGA has. Not knocking Kirby, but I think he is to blame to an extent. I’ve said this for about 3 years now, and i know UGA fans ain’t gonna like this, but if Dan Mullen had the amount of talent UGA has, I think he would’ve won at least 1 National Championship. I’m not trying to be disrespectful, I like Kirby as a coach and a person, but he needs to be held responsible to a certain degree. It was not just Dwan Mathis who was out of sorts vs Arky. The o line was screwing up left and right too b/c they were missing assignments. WRs were running wrong routes and RBs were not always picking up blitzing LBs. Everyone is still trying to learn the new offense. Losing the spring reps from spring combined with losing Newman really hurt. It's going to take half a season, maybe a full season for the O players to get comfortable and figure out what to do b/c what Monken runs is a real, modern day offense which is what most UGA fans wanted and is much more sophisticated and has a bigger learning curve than that 3 yds and a cloud of shit scheme Chaney and Coley used. Many of those plays called by Monken were there. They just weren't properly executed. All they need is more reps and time. I don't know how long, but we should see a little improvement each week after Auburn. Gotta a bad feeling auburn will kill us simply b/c the players on offense have not learned Monken's scheme well enough. But once they do...Look out! And a DT QB is not needed to run it but having one just makes it even more dangerous. Rejoice Wou! The 3 yds and cloud of shit era is over at UGA! It will just take time (maybe a full season) to make the transition. We got a glimpse of how efficient bit can be during the 2nd half when UGA O scored 25 points. And that was with mailman at QB. Our rivals may laugh at us this year, but they won't next year.

Eason went in the fourth. I would consider that he played against less talent and also in a system he got to practice in for a year before starting. Fields again played against lesser competition, but he did well. I wanted Fields over Fromm because you need some playmaking ability at the QB position to win big. With all that said, I think Kirby was directly responsible for holding back the QB’s. He is such a control freak he doesn’t let the OC just coach and you could tell that Fromm tried to protect the ball more than score points in his Jr year. He aired it out in HS and was very accurate. I think Kirby took a necessary step when hiring Monken. I think it’s short sighted to think Kirby hasn’t changed or there’s a ab development issue if Daniels doesn’t light it up right away. COVID condensed the practicing time with a new offense being installed. When I saw the game last week I saw more issues from the supporting cast then the QB himself. This is going to happen when you consider the aforementioned circumstances. I hope he can take off Saturday, but I would say it will take time for us to really see how good the offense can be, the effect monken will have on QB development, and most importantly of Kirby will get the hell out of Monkens way.

The fact that Stetson is the likely starter this week says that something has gone very wrong in the QB room this season. Kirbys philosophy is competition at every position, but it doesn’t work at QB. The reps get split up between multiple guys and no chemistry develops. When Kirby brought in JT, the message he sent was the guys here aren’t good enough. Clearly there still is no plan.

Lou, talent wise, I think we will all agree that Ohio State & Georgia are on the same level year in and year out. But this is what separates Ohio State from Georgia as far as QB’s go, and where you have to give Urban Meyer/Ryan Day props. From Braxton Miller, to JT Barrett, to Cardell Jones, back to JT Barrett, to Dwayne Haskins, to Justin fields. Which were all Ohio States starting QB’s dating back to Urban’s first year in 2012. Notice that every one of those QB’s have completely different skill sets but we’re all highly successful. That’s because Ohio State tweaked how they utilized each one. And if Georgia can keep the right QB’s instead of losing out on the Cam Newton’s, Deshaun Watson’s, Trevor Lawrence’s, and Justin Fields’ which were all from their own backyard, and learn how to use them, Georgia would be unstoppable every year. Hell, Cam & Deshaun both wanted to go to Georgia so Justin Fields wasn’t the first screwup.

We all seem to be expecting a Superman ya know so it’s hard for me to tell if it’s Kirby himself or the options themselves just aren’t good enough (since Fromm left) for what we’re looking for We will eventually acclimate to 21st century offense and find and KEEP an elite dual threat

The issue is not “Look at all that UGA achieved iwith Jack Fromm at QB”. The question is...how much of that was exclusively because of Jack? How much would have occurred and maybe more, if Eason or Fields had been committed to. UGA fired a coach averaging 10 wins per season because it was clear he wasn’t taking them to the next level. That same mindset should have been used on Jack Fromm vs Justin Fields. The highest rated recruit in modern UGA history was Justin Fields...Kirby should have committed to him instead of Jack. That said I don’t think a Kirby Smart team can develop and take advantage of a QB no matter how talented, so for results sake, Kirby may have made the right choice, but that’s an indictment on him as a head coach. The biggest fear UGA fans should have...is Kirby trying to prove you can win the way Bama did 2009-2012? Uncle Lou is right...times have changed...you’re not winning titles 10-6 anymore.

Kirby will eventually be fine, but the rest of your points are right. You take the more talented guy and you do the best to have him win the job. That was not done. There were so many blowouts where UGA had Fields in in the 3rd handing the ball off the rest of the game. Why were those reps not used to get Fields game reps? No coach can say you're running up the scored if it's the 3rd quarter! Fromm stunk in the LSU game, but we didn't see Fields. So either they failed to prepare Fields during the season or they did and were too married to Fromm to want to hurt his feelings.

OU fan here... Georgia has the opposite problem that OU has. The main difference that it is much easier for Georgia to fix their QB play than it is for OU to fix 11 guys on defense. As for UGA, I think its a combination of things. 1. It’s the system 2. It’s the evaluation of talent at QB Georgia reminds me of LSU a few years ago. Athletes all over the field but their offense was like 1950s style with no QB play. Now that LSU figured it out, look what happened. Fromm was the worst of the three QBs you listed yet Smart fell in love with him. You can’t let a guy like Fields walk. He didn’t look good at Georgia for a reason. We all critique our coaches. Kirby is a good coach and he’ll figure it out. UGA is going to win most of their games from talent but I can’t take them seriously to beat Bama or Clemson until they fix their QB play.
