june 26, 2021. Though there have been some steam activities in Georgia in recent years such as TVRM's Summerville trips out of Chattanooga, this is currently the only operating steam locomotive that has Georgia as it home. While I was in Tifton, Georgia for a David Phelps concert, I made sure to arrive early enough to go to the ABAC's Georgia Museum of Agriculture (formerly Georgia Agrirama) to ride the steam train there. The locomotive that does the honors is Vulcan no.5, built over 100 years ago by Vulcan Iron Works. It runs through the museum property and briefly along Interstate 75 on narrow gauge track. The museum itself has a historic style village that shows what life was like in the late 1800's and a beautiful lake that the track runs around as well. I attempted to ride this train the year before, but no. 5 broke down the day I arrived, and it was also as places started shutting down because of the covid scare, so it was a long time before they got the train running again. I was pleased to finally take this ride as I hadn't rode a steam train before and was quite keen on doing so. I filmed the whole ride around the line and the engineer was kind enough to let me pull the whistle after the trip. Two dreams come true at once. After that, I got a burger at the local Checkers and went to the concert. (I got to meet David Phelps and get his autograph that day.) All these plus the 2021 edition of the Tallahassee Model Train Show that morning made for a great day.
